The Politics of Reproduction: Surrogacy in Literature, Film, and Social Media in Italy (Sorrento, Italy)

Surrogacy has become a crucial and complex controversial issue in today’s society. It is a process fraught with ethical implications and consequences that concern human rights, social class inequality, feminism, motherhood, masculinity, parenthood, and the concept of the family. While surrogacy is currently banned in Italy, and the current government is debating to extend the ban to include surrogacy overseas, the representation of surrogacy in literature, cinema, and social media has flourished in the past 15 years. This panel invites presentations on issues related to all aspects of surrogacy. All interdisciplinary approaches are welcome as well as any transnational representation impacting Italy.
