    We propose the so-called domestic "embodied unit labor costs" (EULC) at the country-sector level as a new cost-related basis for measures of international competitiveness. EULC take into account that a sector’s labor costs constitute only a small share of its total cost which to a large extent consist of expenses for inter- mediate goods from other sectors. In line with a simple Leontief-type model, the proposed measure is constructed as a weighted average of unit labor costs of all do- mestic sectors contributing to the final goods of a specific sector. The contribution is expressed in value-added terms and takes global supply chains into account. We also show how EULC can be consistently calculated for sectoral aggregates such as the tradable goods sector. Based on EULC we propose the “embodied real effec- tive exchange rate” (EREER) at the country-sector level as a new competitiveness indicator where the relevance of trading partners is quantified by an appropriate value-added measure. The chosen value-added concept replaces gross exports tra- ditionally used as the weight basis in effective exchange rates. Using the World Input-Output Database (WIOD) we employ the proposed indicators to shed new light on changes in cost competitiveness at the sectoral level for Germany, and compare the empirical evidence with selected other euro area countries.

Durch die verstärkte Optimierung von Lieferketten und die damit entstehenden immer komplexeren und zeitkritischeren Liefernetze tritt das Supply-Chain-Management immer mehr in den Fokus der zivilen Unternehmensführung sowie der militärischen Führung. Die militärische Supply-Chain oder Versorgungskette trägt zur logistischen Sicherstellung von Einsätzen maßgeblich bei. Eine unter prozessorientierten Gesichtspunkten systematisierte Lieferantenauswahl und ein Supply Chain Design stellen somit einen zentralen Bestandteil für den Erfolg der Kette dar. Der gegenwärtige Stand zeigt, dass kein Kennzahlensystem besteht, das den Zeitraum vor Produktionsstart umfassend abdeckt. Daraus leitet sich die Notwendigkeit ab, eine entsprechende Systematik zu entwickeln. Dieses Kennzahlensystem stellt zukünftig auch für die Zeit vor Produktionsstart ein strategisches Instrument zur Lieferantenauswahl sowie zum Supply Chain Design und damit für den späteren Erfolg der Supply Chain dar.

    Digitalisierung ist mehr als nur ein Hype: kurze Innovationszyklen, der digital agierende Kunde sowie ein volatiles Wettbewerbsumfeld fordern von Unternehmen eine nie dagewesene Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit. Vor diesem Hintergrund identifiziert diese Dissertation auf Basis eines Mixed-Methods-Ansatzes – bestehend aus 18 Expertengesprächen und einer Online-Befragung mit 331 Unternehmensvertretern – erstens Veränderungstreiber und analysiert diese hinsichtlich ihrer Wechselwirkungen. Zweitens wird auf der empirischen Grundlage ein soziotechnischer Handlungsrahmen für die digitale Transformation abgeleitet, der wiederum drittens überprüft wird. Die Qualifikation der Mitarbeiter stellt sich als zentrales Handlungsfeld bei der digitalen Transformation in Wertschöpfungsnetzwerken heraus. Digitization is more than just a hype: short innovation cycles, the digitally oriented customer and a volatile competitive environment require companies to achieve an unprecedented speed of reaction. Based on a mixed methods approach – consisting of 18 expert interviews and an online survey with 331 company representatives – this dissertation first identifies drivers for change and analyzes them with regard to their interactions. Second, on the empirical basis, a socio-technical framework for digital transformation is derived, which third is tested. The qualification of the employees turns out to be a central field of action for the digital transformation in supply chains.

    Die Schnelllebigkeit technologischer Innovationen, steigende Kundenanforderungen und verstärkter globaler Wettbewerb haben der Technology Adoption in vielen Unternehmen zuletzt höchste strategische Priorität verliehen - doch nicht alle kommen damit gleichermassen zurecht. Einige Dienstleister sind mit grossen Herausforderungen konfrontiert, da die Einbindung von Technologien in die Leistungserbringung lange nicht zum Kern ihrer Geschäftstätigkeit gehörte. Logistikdienstleister (LDLs) etwa haben Probleme mit dem derzeitigen Druck zur Technology Adoption. Besonderheiten wie die Asset-Intensität von Logistikleistungen oder der regelmässige Einsatz von Subunternehmern erschweren die Einführung von Technologien. Während die Forschung zu Technology Adoption im Allgemeinen stark zunimmt, wurden spezifische Aktivitäten der Adoption bisher nur unzureichend behandelt - gerade aus der Perspektive von LDLs. Die vorliegende Dissertation strebt nach Erklärungen, warum einige LDLs weniger Schwierigkeiten als andere mit der Technology Adoption haben und untersucht drei dazugehörige Aktivitäten: (1) die Suche, (2) den Zugang und (3) die Diffusion. Als theoretisches Fundament der Untersuchungen dienen Diffusionstheorie, Absorptionstheorie, Prinzipal-Agent Theorie sowie die aufmerksamkeitsbezogene Sicht. Die Forschung umfasst drei qualitative Beiträge. Eine erste Studie zu externen Treibern des Suchverhaltens stützt sich auf ein vergleichendes Fallstudiendesign mit sieben Fällen. Eine zweite Studie zu den Auswirkungen des Technologiezugangs auf den Integrationserfolg basiert auf zehn Fallstudien. Eine dritte Studie über die Informationsverteilung bei vertikalen, interorganisationalen Technologiediffusionen verfolgt ein mehrstufiges Fallstudiendesign mit vier Fällen. Die Ergebnisse weisen darauf hin, dass (1) die Unternehmensgrösse die Wirkung externer Treiber auf das Suchverhalten von LDLs beeinflusst, (2) die Wahl des Technolo The emergence of technological innovations at ever-shorter intervals in combination with increasing customer demands and global competition have made technology adoption a top strategic priority for many firms in recent years. However, not all companies can cope with this development to the same extent. Some service firms are facing severe issues, as the incorporation of technologies into their service provision has not been at the core of their business activities in the past. Logistics service providers (LSPs) are currently under unprecedented pressure to introduce technological innovations but have a hard time in doing so. Peculiarities such as the asset intensity of logistics services or the regular use of subcontractors hamper LSPs' efforts to adopt technologies. While research on technology adoption is proliferating, specific technology adoption activities have been insufficiently addressed, thus the lack of an LSP perspective on the topic. Consequently, the present research aims to explain why some LSPs struggle less than others do with technology adoption by examining three selected adoption activities: (1) searching, (2) accessing, and (3) diffusing. Innovation diffusion theory (IDT), absorptive capacity theory, agency theory (AT), and an attention-based view (ABV) are applied as theoretical lenses for the investigations. The research comprises three qualitative studies devoted to one technology adoption activity each. The first study on the external antecedents of LSP search behavior draws on a comparative case study design including seven cases. The second study on the effects of technology access mode choice on integration success is based on ten case studies. The third study on the information distribution in vertical interorganizational technology diffusions incorporates a multi-level case study design and includes four cases. Heute übertreffen Prozessunternehmen wie Amazon oder Walmart ihre Konkurrenten, indem sie radikale und disruptive Innovationen in ihren Supply Chain-Prozessen einsetzen. Die technologischen Optionen zur Ermöglichung dieser Prozessinnovationen scheinen in dieser Hinsicht endlos. Viele Unternehmen haben jedoch Schwierigkeiten, mit den dynamischen Technologiemärkten Schritt zu halten, und auch die Innovationsforschung hat in dieser Hinsicht noch kaum Erkenntnisse speziell für interorganisationale Prozesse geliefert. Ziel dieser Dissertation ist daher die Untersuchung, wie Organisationen ihre Supply Chain-Prozesse durch den gezielten Einsatz von Technologie systematisch innovieren. Die Arbeit plädiert dabei explizit für einen problemorientierten Ansatz zur Prozessinnovation und behandelt das Thema durch die Untersuchung von vier verschiedenen Schwerpunkten: (1) Management der Technologieadaption, (2) systematische Analyse von Innovationsproblemen, (3) Identifikation typischer Innovationsprobleme und Lösungen sowie (4) Integration der Einzelerkenntnisse in eine praktisch anwendbare Methode. Die Dissertation verwendet die Theorie soziotechnischer Systeme, die Task-technology fit-Theorie, und die Kontingenztheorie als theoretische Perspektiven, um diese einzelnen Themen zu untersuchen. Die Forschung umfasst vier Studien, in denen qualitative Fallstudien, designwissenschaftliche Forschung, systematische Literaturanalyse, Experteninterviews und quantitative Datenanalyse eingesetzt werden. Die Ergebnisse der Arbeit leisten somit einen Beitrag zu Theorie und Praxis, indem sie die Einflussfaktoren und die entsprechende Gestaltung der Technologievoreinführung in Supply Chain-Prozesse beleuchten. Darüber hinaus ermöglichen sie die Untersuchung und Klassifizierung von Innovationsproblemen in interorganisationalen Prozessen und reduzieren die Komplexität verschiedener technologischer Anwendungen und deren Einsatzmöglichkeiten. Insgesamt bietet diese Dissertation Unternehmen eine umfassende und gleichzeitig detaillierte Methode, um radikale und disruptive Prozessinnovationen systemisch zu ermöglichen. Market environments of organizations’ supply chains have become more competitive and dynamic than ever, mainly for two reasons. First, recent disruptions have illustrated supply chains’ vulnerability and put the public spotlight on efficient and effective supply chain management. Second, customer expectations are ever-increasing, adding to the fierce competition between supply chains. Thus, organizations must constantly innovate their supply chain processes to stay competitive. Organizations have often focused on product innovation to differentiate themselves from their competitors in the past. However, process companies like Amazon or Walmart outdo their competition today, facilitating radical and disruptive innovation in their supply chain processes. Technological possibilities to enable process innovation seem endless in this regard. However, most organizations struggle to keep up with technological possibilities, and also research has failed to provide insights specifically for inter-organizational processes in this regard. Consequently, this research aims to explain how organizations can systematically innovate their supply chain processes by deploying technology purposively. It thereby advocates explicitly for a problem-oriented approach towards process innovation. The thesis handles the topic by examining four different aspects: (1) management of technology pre-adoption, (2) analysis of innovation problems, (3) identification of typical problems and solutions, and (4) integration of the individual findings into an overarching, actionable method. The thesis utilizes socio-technical systems theory, task-technology fit theory, and contingency theory as theoretical lenses to investigate these individual issues. The research comprises four different studies deploying qualitative case studies, design science research, systematic literature analysis, expert interviews, and quantitative clustering. The thesis’ results contribute to theory and practice by shedding light on the influencing factors and corresponding design of technology preadoption in supply chain processes. Moreover, they allow examining and classifying innovation problems in supply chain processes and reduce the complexity of various technological applications and their de-ployment. Overall, this dissertation provides organizations with a comprehensive and detailed method to facilitate radical and disruptive process innovation systematically.
