; Abstract ; Subject of the doctorale thesis are the personal documents of Franz Kafka, which we call his diary. They have been written between 1909 and 1923 in twelve exercise books and on a few loose papers. We find notes, beginning of texts, short stories, chapters of novels, plans for letters, reflections, description of Kafkas interior view and more coexisting. Franz Kafka used the diaristical medium to make experiments in his way of writing, for self-portraits and for exercises to become a better author. Next to it he was reflecting on the problems of an artist, about the absence of creativity, the faulty of language and so on. Political subjects and descriptions of nature were left out of it. The focus of interest were the development and the completion his work as an author. A subjective perspective and a fixing on details are dominating all notes. Authentical and political things as well as descriptions of nature can only be found between the lines. Statements and starting points of the writing were turned to stylistically literature. We can see the authors maturity and completion in style between the years of writing in his diary excerise books. In the course of time self-criticism became infinitely small and increased the artistically standard. The diary turned to a literary project by itself. In 1921 Milena Jesenská has been the first person who was permited to read the notes. The dissertation is constructed chronologically to explain the difference in function, handling, contents and subject of the diary. There are also integrated chapters about the journey diary and the smaller exercise books which Kafka used between 1916 and 1918. They are similar to the other notes in his diary. Basis for the analysis and interpretation has been the critical Kafka-Edition, which is based on the manuscripts of Franz Kafka and has started the publishing in 1983. It diverges from the highly edited Brod-Edition, which has been spread until then. The doctoral thesis gives a general impression of the diary and his author. It illustrates how everything turned to literature, that not all notes should be read as an autobiography! The diary of Franz Kafka is an absolutely literary diary! ; Abstract ; This thesis focuses on the reception of contemporary German literature in Italy between 1918 and 1938. It draws on both published and unpublished sources and makes particular reference to the large number of articles appearing in the most important Italian cultural and literary journals of the time. The first chapter thus provides an overview of writings on contemporary German literature published in leading publications such as La Voce, Solaria, Il Baretti and La Ronda. The chapters which follow discuss the work of individual Italian writers engaging with German literature of the time. In this context, particular attention is given to Alberto Spaini, Enrico Rocca, Roberto Bazlen and Lavinia Mazzucchetti, who were responsible for initiating the translation of a diverse range of German works during the 1920s and 1930s. The research undertaken for this dissertation shows that it was due to the efforts of these writers that authors such as Alfred Döblin, Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann, Heinrich Mann, Franz Werfel and Stefan Zweig were still being published in Italian translations up until the late 1930s, at a time when the publication of their works was no longer permitted in Germany. The analysis of a wide range of sources ultimately reveals that a generation of Italian intellectuals working as literary critics, translators and publishing consultants established and maintained a process of cultural exchange at a literary level. At the same time this study demonstrates that historical developments subsequently undermined the initial strength of the Italian reception of the German literature of modernity, which faded away in the period immediately prior to the Second World War.

; Abstract ; This study investigates the specific constitution of the entity that presents the words in the poem as exemplified in the Confessional Poetry. For this purpose, the term perspective generating medium has been framed. A technical concept modeled in analogy to the theoretical and practical apparatus of narratological studies. It has been created as an all-inclusive concept capable of embracing all thinkable forms possible in a given poem. The addition of a modifying qualification prevents the emergence of a pleonasm. The perspective generating medium creates, exclusively for each poem, one of the countless forms of perspective or/and an array of perspectives as well as one of the countless versions of reality or/and a polydimensional shape of simultaneously existing realities in the characteristic idiom of the poem, by menas of which the words of the poem are transmitted. The generally accepted consensus about the unmistakable distinction between empirical author and the I of the poem constitutes one of the fundamental premises of this investigation. A prerequisite whose validity is demonstrated by its empirical application at the end of the study. Because, in contrast to many of the existing interpretations, the critical examination of these selected poems succeeds without relying upon the author's biography. Meaning and function of the perspective generating medium become clear by replacing one medium for another one (Transponierungsverfahren, Stanzel). Since substituting the entity initially designed by its author in a specific poem for another one contributes to throw light not only on one of the author's purposes for shaping this textual level in this specific way, but also on the importance of this category as a whole. Thanks to the identification and classification of the different shapes that the perspective generating medium yields, shapes that appear in the poetical works of the four poets here selected, it was possible to argue persuasively why the German term "lyric I" (lyrisches Ich) stands for only one of the many subclasses the poem can embody, that is to say, a special type of romantic poem. A detailed analysis of Sylvia Plath's poem "The Moon and the Yew Tree" demonstrates step by step how this model, presented in the first part of this study in theoretical form, is finally put into practice. It serves as a guiding example for the lyric expert as well as for the lover of poetry. It explores the different ways of shaping perspectives in modern poetry and develops significant views which concern the historical background of the Confessional Poets.

; Abstract ; The dissertation examines the poetry of Georg Trakl in a text-immanent manner. Trakls poems are conventionally regarded as „hermetic“; this paper emphasises a dynamics in the poems that can be activated by the reader. A complete interpretation of each poem is provided in a separate chapter. The interpretations focus on the experiential opportunities that the recipient has. Thus every single poem is assigned its individual experiential signature. Solely oriented towards the literary work, the dissertation offers travel suggestions through the poetry and presents alternative perspectives and states of perception. Interferences between the poet’s biography and his work are not explored. Intertextuality is taken into consideration not in a systematic way, but only with regard to particular cases. In place of a result, the dissertation puts the experience. Structurally, the dissertation is arranged as a collection of interpretations; methodologically, it approaches the text-immanent interpretations with a close reader integration and the implicit reader in mind. In pursuing this method, it is based on the “subjective sensibility” in the exploration of Trakl’s poetry, as suggested by Gustav Kars, and on Franz Fühmann’s essay book “Vor Feuerschlünden - Erfahrung mit Georg Trakls Gedicht.” Its primary theoretical basis forms Peter von Matt’s radical re-evaluation of the Theory of Hermetics by means of his “phenomenology of the Trakl reading”. Connections between the separately treated poems are only traced perspectively. The dissertation retains the abeyance in which Trakl’s poems are to be left by the recipient. As a piece of qualitative basic research, it is open to discussion and continuation.

Abstract ; Diese Dissertation soll einen Beitrag zur Diskussion um die Fragestellung leisten, inwiefern das Marionettenmotiv Goethes Roman "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre", Kleists Aufsatz "Über das Marionettentheater" und seine Dramen verbindet. ; Abstract ; This doctoral thesis make a contribution to the discussion about the question, to what extent the motiv oft the marionette in Goethe's novel "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre", is combined with Kleist's essay "Über das Marionettentheater" and his dramas. The connection between Goethe's novel and Kleist's essay exists in the motive of the marionette. To emanate from the aesthetic projection, the concept of the grace in Schiller, Goethe and Kleist, is under discussion with the art-theoretical essays of Goethe, Schiller and Winckelmann. Furthermore will be investigated, whether Goethe's novel "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre" is based on the theoretical model of Kleist's essay "Über das Marionettentheater" and his dramas. The motive of the marionette exists during "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre" as well as in Kleist's essay "Über das Marionettentheater". It is analyzed, to what extent this motive connects both works and whether in literature-scientific regard a development of Goethe's novel to Kleist's essay "Über das Marionettentheater" and his dramas takes place. The discussion between Goethe and Shakespeare within the novel reflects to the character "Wilhelm". At this point of the doctoral thesis a confrontation of the characters "Hamlet" and "Wilhelm" / "Hamlet" and "Prinz Friedrich von Homburg" is provided, in order to prove that these figures live in a real world as well as in a fictional world. Subject and question are a new contribution in the discussion about the poetic works of Goethe and Kleist. It was proven that in this work Kleist has processed the motive of the marionette from the novel "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre" in his article and his dramas to reach a new mechanical model. A comparison of both works, Goethe's novel and Kleist's essay, was never taken into consideration in the research literature.

; Abstract ; Starting with the essay on Proust published in 1929 the technical term Eingedenken plays a crucial role in Walter Benjamin’s writings. However a thorough research about this concept is still lacking in the immense literature on his thought. The principal aim of this doctoral thesis was to fill such lack by providing a vast and meticulous analysis of the meaning of Eingedenken in Benjamin’s work. The opening chapter shed light on the origins of this very peculiar and unusual German term: as a matter of fact it was Ernst Bloch, not Benjamin, who invented this concept in his first major book, Geist der Utopie (1918). By forming this bizarre noun from the phrasal verb “eingedenk sein”, Bloch tries to outline a utopian experience: an act by which the subject brings to light some potentialities hidden in a forgotten past. Benjamin not only read the first edition of Geist der Utopie, he also wrote a review of the book which is unfortunately missing. On the basis of his letters we argued that although he rejected Bloch’s gnostic metaphysics, Benjamin was deeply influenced by the idea of Eingedenken. This concept plays a central role in the method of the Passagenarbeit as well as in “On the concept of history”, Benjamin’s last text. Following the chronological development of Benjamin’s work I thus examined the different meanings the term Eingedenken assumes: the connection with the concept of Erwachen in the first drafts of the Passagenarbeit (chapter 2), Proust’s idea of “mémoire involontaire” and its translation by Benjamin with “ungewolltes Eingedenken” (chapter 3), the theory of quotation (Zitat) in the essay on Kraus (chapter 4), the specific logic of remembrance in the Berliner Kindheit (chapter 5), the idea of “Studium” in the essay on Kafka (chapter 6), the difference between recollection, memory, and Eingedenken in the essay on the Storyteller (chapter 7), and finally the salvation of the idea of Eingedenken in the essays on Baudelaire as well as in the thesis on the concept of history (chapter 8). The result of my research can be thus summarized this way: Benjamin’s Eingedenken has to be seen not as a concept with an unambiguous meaning, but as a “Denkfigur” or an “idea” in Benjamin’s sense (chapter 9).

Other ; The following paper considers Joseph Conrad’s standing vis-à-vis the Germans as well as the reception of his works in the German-speaking area. The analysis focuses on the German policies of publication and the nature of germanophone reviews, research interests, and translation practices – accounting for relevant socio- and cultural-historical contexts. The study attempts to demonstrate the exemplary quality featured by the German appropriation of Conrad’s canonical short novel Heart of Darkness.

Other ; After the opening of the country in the middle of the 19th century, Japan quickly moved towards becoming an industrialized world power. But the romanticist syndrome, imported from Europe by Mori Ogai since the 1890s, especially enchanted young intellectuals and drove their search of a Japanese cultural identity. The goal was, internally, to integrate the entire population, and externally, to make the country distinguishable from the »West« ─ paradoxically, in a spirit of European Romanticism. Takemitsu Morikawa investigates these remarkable developments and retraces the rise and canonization of the alleged self-image of modern Japan.

Other ; Crowdsourcing linguistic phenomena with smartphone applications is relatively new. In linguistics, apps have predominantly been developed to create pronunciation dictionaries, to train acoustic models, and to archive endangered languages. This paper presents the first account of how apps can be used to collect data suitable for documenting language change: we created an app, Dialäkt Äpp (DÄ), which predicts users’ dialects. For 16 linguistic variables, users select a dialectal variant from a drop-down menu. DÄ then geographically locates the user’s dialect by suggesting a list of communes where dialect variants most similar to their choices are used. Underlying this prediction are 16 maps from the historical Linguistic Atlas of German-speaking Switzerland, which documents the linguistic situation around 1950. Where users disagree with the prediction, they can indicate what they consider to be their dialect’s location. With this information, the 16 variables can be assessed for language change. Thanks to the playfulness of its functionality, DÄ has reached many users; our linguistic analyses are based on data from nearly 60,000 speakers. Results reveal a relative stability for phonetic variables, while lexical and morphological variables seem more prone to change. Crowdsourcing large amounts of dialect data with smartphone apps has the potential to complement existing data collection techniques and to provide evidence that traditional methods cannot, with normal resources, hope to gather. Nonetheless, it is important to emphasize a range of methodological caveats, including sparse knowledge of users’ linguistic backgrounds (users only indicate age, sex) and users’ self-declaration of their dialect. These are discussed and evaluated in detail here. Findings remain intriguing nevertheless: as a means of quality control, we report that traditional dialectological methods have revealed trends similar to those found by the app. This underlines the validity of the crowdsourcing method. We are presently extending DÄ architecture to other languages.

Other ; Travelogues involve different truth claims, depending on whether their authors attempt on the one hand to convey received knowledge about entities and places, or on the other hand, present accounts of the traveler character’s own experiences. This study focuses on a travelogue from 1764 written by the Arabian Nights’ Syrian storyteller, Ḥanna Dyāb. Having written his travelogue more than 50 years after his trip to Paris, he evidently conceived of his narrative as a means to re-enact his experiences as a young traveler. To describe his particular self-staging in this autodiegetic narration “before fiction” (Paige 2011), I argue that an understanding of focalization as a graded visual mediation between the character’s inner life and the reader is needed. This approach helps one grasp how, with reference to Dyāb’s travelogue, truth is not something the traveler witnesses, but rather something the reader is invited to realize. I conclude that, with this shift from witnessing to visualization (Vergegenwärtigung), Dyāb’s travelogue fulfills a core function of literature.

; Other ; Tendencies of a compression of labour and the blurring of the boundaries between leisure and work are illustrated by examples from Dave Eggers' novel 'The Circle'. Those tendencies plausibilize a link between modern forms of employment and the increase in bournout and depression diagnosis. Since the empirical evidence for those links remains insufficient to support the intuition that those forms of work are problematic, a different and ethical access to a critical view on modern forms of employment is proposed.

Other ; Kosrae, or ‘The Island of The Sleeping Lady’ as it is known to locals, is the most remote island of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), located in the western Pacific. FSM is an independent sovereign nation consisting of four state in total: Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap and Kosrae. First claimed by the Spanish, who were forced to cede FSM to Germany in 1899. In 1914, the Japanese took military possession of the region resulting in considerable economic, social and political change for the islands’ inhabitants. By 1947 after WWII, the islands formed part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands commissioned by the UN and administered by the US. The FSM became an independent nation in 1986 while still retaining affiliation with the US under a ‘Compact of Free Association’ encouraging the officiating of English as a language of FSM, alongside local languages. Here I examine the presence and uses of English in Kosrae with reference to these socio-historical influences. First, I discuss the extralinguistic factors which have shaped the English that is currently found on Kosrae. Secondly, I assess the use of English in this community in light of Schneider’s (2007) ‘Dynamic Model’. Finally, an overview of the salient linguistic characteristics of Kosraean English, based on data collected in informal conversations on the island, will be presented. The overall objective is to present a socio-historical, political and linguistic description of a hitherto unexamined English emerging in a postcolonial environment. Schneider, E. (2007). 25. Post-colonial (American?) English Presence on the North-Western Pacific Island of Kosrae: A cross-linguistic analysis of the overlaps and divergences of Kosraean English compared to standard American English

Other ; Kosrae is the most remote island of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), with a population of less than 7,000 inhabitants, located in the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Guam. FSM is an independent sovereign nation consisting of four states in total: Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap, and Kosrae. Having passed through the hands of Spain, Germany and Japan, the United States gained administrative control of FSM after WWII, as commissioned by the UN. The FSM became an independent nation in 1986 while still retaining affiliation with the US under a ‘Compact of Free Association’. Now both Kosraean and English are considered to be the two official languages and the variety of Kosraean English which has arisen proves for an interesting comparative study. In order to obtain the relevant data, I spent three months on the island of Kosrae, interviewing 90 local speakers, ranging in age (16-70), occupation, sex and time spent off island. The 45 minute long interviews were informal but supported by participant information to capture relevant data and conversations were guided in a way that aimed to reveal language and cultural attitudes. With reference to these samples, I examine the effects of American English on the language use in Kosrae. This paper aims to present a broad analysis of phonological, morphosyntactic and pragmatic features, such as pro-dropping, discourse markers and other practices in order to demonstrate the similarities and differences between the two varieties, which are coming to shape the variety developing on Kosrae. Having transcribed conversations using the tool Elan, I will put particular focus on [h] deletion and insertion, a rare occurrence found in a variety of post-colonial American English which I believe is of particular interest. I assess the presence of English in Kosrae with reference to sociological influences, past and present. First, I discuss the extralinguistic factors which have shaped the English that is currently used on Kosrae, including migration between US and FSM, and English as a language of administration, social media usage and visual media presence. Secondly, I assess the use of English in this community in light of Schneider’s (2007) ‘Dynamic Model’, with reference to America’s contribution as an ‘exploitation colony’ as defined by Mufwene (2001). Finally, an overview of the salient linguistic characteristics of Kosraean English, based on the data collected will be presented and compared to features associated with standard American English in view of examining overlap and divergence. The overall objective is to present a cross-linguistic description of a hitherto unexamined English emerging in a postcolonial environment with a juxtaposed contact variety.
