But do only Hollywood movies and TV news have the power to frame public discourse? This interdisciplinary study transfers media framing theory to literary studies to show how life writing (re-)frames Orientalist stereotypes. The innovative analysis of the post-9/11 autobiographies »West of Kabul, East of New York«, »Letters from Cairo«, and »Howling in Mesopotamia« makes a powerful claim to approach literature based on a theory of production and reception, thus enhancing the multi-disciplinary potential of framing theory

    This report emphasizes the need to design an alternative development model to the Economic Structural Adjustment Programme (ESAP) in Zimbabwe. While acknowledging that SAPs are necessary, the study shows that they are insufficient in fostering development (that is, growth with equity). Zimbabwe's economy is characterized by a number of structural rigidities such as unequal access to land and finance whilst a large proportion of its population is engaged in the informal sector. It is the contention of the report that under such conditions, there is nothing inherent in ESAP policies that will lead to development. The main focus of the report, as opposed to SAPs, is to redefine the role of the state in the economy. While SAPs emphasize the rolling back of the state, this report is rooted in the premise that market failures are rampant in most less developed countries, including Zimbabwe. The state needs to intervene in factor markets, in the development of industrial and technological capabilities in order to foster competitiveness, etc, so as to deal with such market failures.     Vertreter von 107 Völkern sind in Tatarstan ansässig, dennoch bilden Tataren und Russen mit zusammen 90% den größten Teil der Bevölkerung. Der Autor skizziert die Veränderungen der 90er Jahre in der Republik hinsichtlich der ethnischen Entwicklungen. Widersprüche ergeben sich dabei - und dies steht im Mittelpunkt des Beitrages - auf dem sozial-ökonomischen Sektor, auf der kulturellen und sprachlichen Ebene sowie bezüglich des territorialen Status nach Zerfall der UdSSR. Trotz der relativ ausgewogenen Politik sind noch weitere Maßnahmen zur Sicherung der Rechte der russischsprachigen Bevölkerung nötig; besonders erwähnt werden dabei Schriftsteller und Literaturwissenschaftler.     En el presente articulo el autor expone algunas preocupaciones contemporaneas acerca de los estudios del desarrollo, especialmente aquellas que se relacionan con la "contrarrevolucion" neoclasica o neoliberal en la teoria economica. Luego contrasta los puntos de vista neoliberales con las ideas estructuralistas, centrando su atencion en cuatro puntos claves: el ajuste estructural, el nuevo orden mundial, el estado y los mercados y las estrategias de desarrollo. Esta comparacion le permite acercarse a la contribucion latinoamericana a los estudios del desarrollo a partir de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. (DÜI-Rol)
