    Abstract: Im Rahmen des DFG-geförderten Forschungsprojektes "Ensuring Valid Comparisons of Self-Reports in Heterogenous Populations and Marginalized Groups (ENSURE)" (Projektnummer 409654512) an der Professur für empirische Sozialforschung (Institut für Soziologie, Technische Universität Dresden) werden bereits etablierte Messinstrumente quantitativer Befragungen in der Gesundheitsforschung einem kognitiven Pretest unterzogen, um sicherzustellen, dass sie auch in anderen Sprach- und Kulturkreisen eingesetzt werden können (sprach- und kulturübergreifende Messinvarianz). Die Zielgruppe stellen in Deutschland lebenden Personen mit Fluchterfahrung (Fluchtmigration) aus Syrien, dem Irak und Afghanistan dar.     Abstract: To challenge the commonly made assumption in cross-national survey projects that close translation yields more comparable data than adaptation, we implemented a translation experiment in the CROss-National Online Survey Panel. The English source questionnaire was split into three batches of 20 items each and was translated by three translation teams into Estonian and three teams into Slovene. The teams received specific instructions on how to translate each batch (either closely or adaptively) so that, by design, the teams translated two batches following one approach and one following the other approach. Respondents in the two countries (Estonia and Slovenia) were randomly assigned to three distinct questionnaire versions based on the same source questionnaire, each consisting of translations by all three teams and including close and adaptive translations.     Abstract: Sound questionnaire translation is crucial for collecting equivalent data in cross-national surveys. The topic is widely discussed in fields in which translated questionnaires are used, such as in the social sciences or in cross-cultural psychology, but hardly in translation studies. This article aims at bridging this gap by bringing the genre of questionnaires closer to translation scholars and practitioners. To begin with, we will provide a sketch of key characteristics of cross-national survey methodology, with a special focus on questionnaire translation. Next, the multi-dimensional concept of translation competence will be introduced. Along the ISO 17100 competence model then, we will list requirements, challenges, and resources for questionnaire translation and illustrate those with examples. The concluding paragraph will highlight areas for interdisciplinary research involving both translation studies and cross-national survey methodology

    Abstract: Back translation - the 're-translation' of a translated questionnaire back into the original language and the subsequent comparison of the original version and the back translation - is a controversial assessment method for questionnaire translations. Recently, cross-cultural survey methodologists have followed the call for more empirical research on this method. This article adds to the small body of research by drawing on the back translation documentation from the 2012 European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS). First, results from the official EQLS back translation step are contrasted with results when additional persons perform the same comparison step between back translation and original. We note inconsistency in the detection of presumed flaws. Second, the back translation outcome is contrasted with additional native speaker checks of the actual translation.     Abstract: This contribution deals with measurement instruments - that is, questionnaires and individual items - employed in international survey research. By international surveys we mean cross-national comparative studies whose concept, implementation, and organisation are shaped by the comparability requirement. We begin by focussing on general aspects of the comparability of international surveys. In the case of problems that occur in all surveys - for example sampling-related problems and nonresponse - we refer the reader to the corresponding thematic contributions in the Survey Guidelines and to the literature. We make a distinction between ensuring the comparability of measurement instruments ex-ante and ex-post - that is, before or after the actual survey is, or has been, conducted. Comparability is established ex ante by means of pretests, for example; it is established ex post within the framework of the data analysis or additional studies. Vor diesem Hintergrund sind viele der Übersetzungen nicht idiomatisch. In einigen Fällen sind einzelnen Übersetzungen detailliertere Erklärungen beigefügt.Insgesamt soll diese englische Version des ALLBUS jedoch nur einen allgemeinen Überblick über die Befragung vermitteln und hat nicht sprachspezifische Erklärungen zum Inhalt. Um die Qualität der Übersetzung zu gewährleisten, werden besondere Methoden angewandt. Diese Arbeit untersucht anhand einer Fallstudie aus dem International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) die Methode des Team-Ansatzes: Parallel angefertigte Übersetzungen wurden in einem Team aus Übersetzern und Umfrageexperten diskutiert. Die Aufnahme und Transkription der Diskussion ermöglichten eine Prozessanalyse. Im Zentrum standen hierbei Probleme und Problemlösungen, Methodenbewertung und Qualitätsverständnis des Teams.     Abstract: Dieses Kapitel beschäftigt sich mit Messinstrumenten, d.h. Fragebögen und einzelnen Fragen, in internationaler Umfrageforschung. Unter internationalen Umfragen verstehen wir dabei Studien, bei denen verschiedene Länder miteinander verglichen werden und bei denen die Forderung nach Vergleichbarkeit die Konzeption, Durchführung und Organisation der Studien prägt. Wir konzentrieren uns zunächst auf allgemeine Fragen der Vergleichbarkeit internationaler Umfragen, wobei wir hinsichtlich der Probleme, die für alle Umfragen allgemein gelten, sowie der Probleme der Stichprobenziehung und Non-response in internationalen Umfragen auf die entsprechenden thematischen Kapitel sowie weiterführende Literatur verweisen. Wir unterscheiden sodann zwischen der ex-ante- und ex-post-Sicherstellung vergleichbarer Messinstrumente, d.h. bevor (z.B. in der Form von Pretests) und nachdem die eigentliche Umfrage durchgeführt wird (im Rahmen der Datenanalyse oder zusätzlicher Studien).     Abstract: "Es existiert kaum ein Forschungsfragebogen in den Sozialwissenschaften, in dem nicht routinemäßig auch das Geschlecht abgefragt wird. Die entsprechende Frage samt Antwortalternativen scheint aus Sicht der Umfragepraxis simpel: Man lässt die Befragten einfach 'männlich' oder 'weiblich' ankreuzen. Der vorliegende Beitrag problematisiert diese Erfassung von Geschlecht in Forschungsfragebögen. Es werden unterschiedliche Operationalisierungsformen (Einzel-Items und psychometrische Skalen) vorgestellt und aus Sicht der Gender- und Queer-Theorie, aber auch der Mess- und Umfragetheorie sowie der Forschungsethik kritisch hinsichtlich ihrer Vor- und Nachteile diskutiert. Der Beitrag will dazu anregen, a) Geschlecht reflektierter zu operationalisieren, b) verschiedene Operationalisierungsformen in zukünftigen Methodenstudien zu prüfen und c) die Operationalisierungsprobleme beim Konstrukt "Geschlecht" im Rahmen der Methodenlehre ausdrücklich zu behandeln."     Abstract: "Good questionnaire design and high quality questionnaire translations are vital for data comparability in cross-national survey research. With the aim to ensure comparability and prevent unintended deviations, major academically-driven studies such as the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) or the European Social Survey (ESS) annotate the source questionnaire specifically for translation, thus providing guidance on what needs to be considered in translation. This paper studies these translation annotations, a topic having received scant attention in research so far. The goal of this paper is to raise awareness on this special support structure in comparative research as well as on potential pitfalls in questionnaire translation. To this end, first, translation annotations, mainly from the ESS and the ISSP, are analyzed with a view to setting up a classification of translation annotations.     Abstract: Few research studies compare results from self-administered bilingual paper questionnaires on how the positioning of skip instructions may affect the respondent’s ability to follow skip patterns. Using data from the 2004 and 2005 of the Phase 5 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) mail survey questionnaire, this paper attempts to fill this gap. We examined whether the positioning of skip instructions can produce differences in item nonresponse rates in subsequent items and how results compare between English and Spanish language questionnaires. These results will be of interest to designers of bilingual self-administered survey questionnaires in guiding respondents through the intended navigational path with skip patterns

    Abstract: Die robuste deutsche Konjunktur und die gute Verfassung des Arbeitsmarktes prägen die Situation und Erwartungen der großen Mehrheit der Bevölkerung. 53 Prozent gehen für die nächsten sechs Monate von einem stabilen ökonomischen Umfeld aus, knapp jeder Fünfte rechnet sogar mit einer signifikanten Aufwärtsentwicklung; lediglich 18 Prozent befürchten, dass sich die konjunkturellen Rahmendaten in den nächsten Monaten negativ entwickeln könnten. Auch die Situation und die Perspektiven des eigenen Unternehmens werden von den in der Privatwirtschaft Beschäftigten weit überwiegend positiv bilanziert. So stufen 70 Prozent der Beschäftigten die Situation des eigenen Unternehmens zurzeit als gut oder sogar sehr gut ein, weitere 19 Prozent als "einigermaßen"; lediglich 9 Prozent beschreiben die Lage des eigenen Unternehmens als instabil oder schlecht. Der Anteil, der die Lage des eigenen Unternehmens sogar als sehr gut bewertet, ist über die letzten Jahre hinweg kontinuierlich angestiegen

    Abstract: Quantitative questionnaires are increasingly applied across different languages and cultures. They play an important role in research on immigrant communities as well as in surveys of the general population of which immigrants are a significant part. Because immigrants have often limited proficiency of the language of the host country, usually questionnaires in their first language ("mother tongue") are needed. For this purpose, it is common to use questionnaires developed or adapted for the population of the respective countries which immigrants originate from. The applicability of these questionnaires, however, may be limited because of differences between both populations in terms of language usage, amongst others resulting from language attrition. This, for example, can be illustrated by means of the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ-R) applied to Turks in Turkey and Turkish immigrants residing in Germany.     Abstract: A pilot research programme was undertaken in order to translate and cognitively test the personal well-being questions developed by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in the UK into Urdu and Sylheti. These are both complex languages spoken by minority ethnic groups in the UK; monolingual speakers of these languages have been identified as being at risk of lower general health, and thus potentially of a lower well-being than the general UK population. The research programme involved two key stages in the production of these translations: translation workshops and cognitive testing of the translations. The translation workshops brought together experts in questionnaire development and personal well-being with native speakers of the languages from the community and bilingual interviewers in order to attempt to underpin the essence of the four personal well-being measures and arrive at the translation to be tested.     Abstract: Many researchers consider it a best practice to include respondent pretesting as part of the survey translation process (Survey Research Center, 2016). The U.S. Census Bureau has a Pretesting Standard that delineates requirements to ensure that any data collection instrument "works," by verifying that it can be administered as intended by interviewers and understood and responded to appropriately by respondents (U.S. Census Bureau, 2015). Expert review is included in the standard but it is described as a sort of evaluation method of last resort due to its lack of inclusion of respondent pretesting in the process. In large survey organizations, there can be a variety of types of materials in need of translation ranging from actual survey questionnaires to other support materials. Due to resource limitations, expert review is a method that often comes into play in the absence of resources for respondent testing.     Abstract: The IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees is one of the first large-scale quantitative surveys in Germany focusing on refugees exclusively. It is able to provide valuable insights on the recent cohort of refugees who arrived in Germany as of the year 2013. However, due to the fact that most respondents of the target population are not proficient in German, the research partners who conducted the survey faced several obstacles. One crucial aspect in this regard was the written and audio translation of field instruments. Therefore, this paper gives some insights into the translation and fielding procedures and presents numbers on the use of written and audio translations in the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees. We found that especially a written translation was very helpful, but also the audio files proved to facilitate participation in the survey. However, due to the fact that those tools are new and innovative, further research on their effects on survey quality needs to be carried out

    Abstract: "The paper presents German-American research on expressions from response scales used in cross-national and cross-lingual survey research. Respondents in the United States and Germany were asked to rate expression for the degrees of intensity they were held to express. The scales used were scales of agreement, importance and for/against. The findings of the study raise as many questions as they answer. Translation-based pairings of expressions across English and German work well but not perfectly. Symmetrical response scales often lead to artificial-sounding 'scalespeak' constructions: their effect on scale responses is unknown. Well-matched translation pairings were sometimes differently scored across the populations. Germans and Americans differed in the range of scale points they employed and in the range of vocabulary used to 'explain' expressions. The study is seen as a first step towards understanding cross-national response scale issues." (author's abstract)
