    Several scholarly fields investigate the reuse of source texts, most relevantly adaptation studies and fanfiction studies. The limitation of these two fields is that adaptation studies focuses narrowly on retelling, usually in the form of film adaptations, but is not as well equipped to treat other uses of source material like prequels, sequels, and spinoffs. On the other hand, fanfiction studies has the broad reach adaptation studies lacks but is generally interested in "underground" production rather than material that goes through the official publication process and thus enters the literary canon. This book sits in the gap between these fields, discussing published novels and their contribution to the scholarly engagement with their pre- and early modern source material as well as applying that creative framework to the teaching of literature in the college classroom

    This interdisciplinary study introduces readers to Friedrich Schleiermacher’s diverse pathways of reflection and creative practice that are related to the field of translation. By drawing attention to Schleiermacher’s various writings on a range of subjects (including philology, criticism, hermeneutics, dialectics, rhetoric and religion), the author makes it clear that the frequently cited lecture Über die verschiedenen Methoden des Übersetzens (On the Different Methods of Translating) represents but a fraction of Schleiermacher’s contributions to modern-day insights into translation. The analysis of Schleiermacher’s various pathways of reflection on translation presented in this book leads to the conclusion that translation is part of the essence of the world, as it is a fundamental tool of our cognition and a foundation of our existence. In Schleiermacher’s works, transfer, translation, mediation, and communication underpin our very existence in the world and our self-awareness.     Dante, the pilgrim, is the image of an author who stubbornly looks ahead, seeking and building the "Great Beyond" (Manguel). Following in his footsteps is therefore not a return to the past, going à rebours, but a commitment to the future, to exploring the potential of humanity to "transhumanise". This dynamic of self-transcendence in Dante’s humanism (Ossola), which claims for European civilisation a vocation for universalism (Ferroni), is analysed in the volume at three crucial moments: Firstly, the establishment of an emancipatory relationship between author and reader (Ascoli), in which authorship is authority and not power; secondly, the conception of vision as a learning process and horizon of eschatological overcoming (Mendonça); finally, the relationship with the past, which is never purely monumental, but ethically and intertextually dynamic, in an original rewriting of the original scriptural, medieval, and classical culture (Nasti, Bolzoni, Bartolomei). A second group of contributions is dedicated to the reconstruction of Dante’s presence in Portuguese literature (Almeida, Espírito Santo, Figueiredo, Marnoto, Vaz de Carvalho): they attest to the innovative impact of Dante’s work even in literary traditions more distant from it

    Nach dem Erscheinen der beiden Vorlesungsbände zur Psychologie (KGA II/13) und zur Ästhetik (KGA II/14) im Rahmen der Kritischen Gesamtausgabe der Werke Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermachers liegen verbindliche und vollständige Textgrundlagen vor, die dazu einladen, sich den anthropologischen und ästhetischen Themen Schleiermachers neu zuzuwenden. Von DER Anthropologie Schleiermachers kann nicht gesprochen werden. Er selbst hat eine solche Disziplin nur randständig und wenig konturiert beschrieben. Gleichwohl durchziehen Menschenbildannahmen sein philosophisches und theologisches Werk. Entsprechend breit fächern sich die Beiträge auf und beleuchten anthropologische Fragen aus pädagogischer, theologischer oder psychologischer Sicht und bauen Brücken zu zeitgenössischen (etwa Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi) oder späteren (Ernst Cassirer) Entwürfen. Ästhetik ist die letzte philosophische Disziplin, die Schleiermacher in den Zyklus seiner philosophischen Vorlesungen aufnahm, wobei er über ihre ethische Fundierung bereits in seinen ersten Hallenser Vorlesungen reflektierte. Die Beiträge zur Ästhetik schlagen einen Bogen von der Urbildtheorie, der Praktischen Theologie und der Musikrezeption Schleiermachers bis hin zur Kunsttheorie von Aby Warburg This volume focuses on Schleiermacher's anthropology and aesthetics. It offers contributions from the Wittenberg Schleiermacher Symposia of 2019 and 2020 as well as other thematically relevant texts in a concentrated form and spans an arc between philosophical and theological perspectives that are informative for Schleiermacher's systematic thinking with regard to anthropological, aesthetic, and religion-theoretical considerations

    Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit der transnationalen Dimension der Kanonisierung von Literatur im Rahmen der griechisch-sowjetischen Literaturbeziehungen. Teil der sowjetischen ideologischen Expansion war auch ein Konzept von Weltliteratur, mithilfe dessen ein normatives ästhetisches Programm exportiert und eine ‚Internationale des Geistes‘ etabliert werden sollte. Die Arbeit betrachtet die Übersetzung und Publikation neugriechischer Literatur in der Sowjetunion als Unterprojekt des sowjetischen Kultur- und Weltliteraturprojekts und erkundet anhand dieses literarhistorischen Fallbeispiels dessen Wege und Realisierungsstrategien. Den Forschungsgegenstand der Arbeit bilden Rezeption, Übersetzung, Publikation und Präsentation neugriechischer Literatur in der Sowjetunion in Hinblick auf narrative Strategien, Übersetzungspraktiken und Vermittlungsaktivitäten. Die Arbeit, die sowohl eine narratologische als auch eine literaturpragmatische Dimension von Kanonisierung in den Blick nimmt und sich weitgehend auf unveröffentlichtes Archivmaterial stützt, stellt die erste systematische komparatistische Untersuchung des bis dato unkartierten Bereichs der griechisch-sowjetischen Literatur- und Übersetzungsgeschichte dar This book deals with the transnational dimension of the canonization of literature in the context of Greek-Soviet literary relations.     Das 20. Jahrhundert war geprägt von Völkermorden. Die literarische Auseinandersetzung im deutschsprachigen Raum beschränkte sich dabei lange Zeit auf den nationalsozialistischen Judenmord. Anknüpfend an Ansätze der vergleichenden Genozidforschung und der literarischen Aufarbeitung der Shoah, zeigt Gerald Manstetten, dass mittlerweile auch andere Genozide in den literarischen Fokus genommen werden. Am Beispiel von neun deutschsprachigen Werken weist er diese Entwicklung ebenso nach wie den noch immer starken Einfluss der Shoah auf das Schreiben über Genozide in deutscher Sprache
