    Research on translation and music has so far focused mainly on «art music» and on issues such as quality, singability and accessibility. Studies which seek to embed translation and music within their historical and sociocultural contexts are relatively rare. This book aims to shed light on how translations of popular music contribute to fostering international relations by focusing on a case study of Turkish-Greek rapprochement in the last two decades. It provides a brief account of the thaw in relations between the two countries and then examines the ways in which translation and music have played a role in these changes. By looking at the phenomenon through the music’s various forms of materiality (on paper, in audio and through the internet) and the different forms the accompanying translations take, and by drawing on a range of disciplines (popular music studies, sociology of music, ethnomusicology, social anthropology, comparative literature and fan studies), the book aims to foreground the multifaceted nature of translation and music and their wide-ranging impact on society and international relations. «This rich, intelligently articulated, small volume opens a door to ways of understanding that in a global world, translation is intrinsically part of the production, dissemination and consumption of music and that this goes much beyond the translation of song lyrics.»(Lucile Desblache, The Journal of Specialised Translation 27/2017)«[...] the author manages to incorporate an impressive range of ideas into her own original work, and this multitude of influences breathes vivid life into what is, at its core, a study of the emotional aspects of translation.»(Panayotis League, Journal of Modern Greek Studies, Vol. 35, No. 2, 2017)...

    Zusammenfassung: "Analyzing literary texts and films, White Rebels in Black shows how German authors have since the 1950s appropriated black popular culture, particularly music, to distance themselves from the legacy of Nazi Germany, authoritarianism, and racism, and how such appropriation changes over time. Priscilla Layne offers a critique of how blackness came to symbolize a positive escape from the hegemonic masculinity of postwar Germany, and how black identities have been represented as separate from, and in opposition to, German identity, foreclosing the possibility of being both black and German. Citing four autobiographies published by black German authors Hans Jürgen Massaquo, Theodor Michael, Günter Kaufmann, and Charly Graf, Layne considers how black German men have related to hegemonic masculinity since Nazi Germany, and concludes with a discussion on the work of black German poet, Philipp Khabo Köpsell."--Provided by publisher.

    Abstract: Während der Umgang mit Musiksoftware und der Einsatz digitaler Schnitttechniken inzwischen zur Alltagsroutine in den Studios geworden sind, mangelt es in der musikpsychologischen Rezeptionsforschung an grundlegenden empirischen Untersuchungen. Das länderübergreifendes Projekt "Inside The Cut" zwischen der Hochschule der Künste (Bern) und der Musikhochschule Lübeck, möchte in diesem Zusammenhang erste Forschungsfragen formulieren. Neben der Rezipientenseite soll dabei auch die Seite der Produzenten und Tontechniker berücksichtigt werden. Das Projekt verfolgt das konkrete Ziel, die Wahrnehmung auditiver Schnittmuster in der populären Musik näher zu untersuchen. Solche Schnittmuster entstehen, wenn einzelne Songabschnitte oder Ausschnitte einzelner "Spuren" aus ihrem ursprünglichen musikalischen Kontext herausgeschnitten und an einer anderen Stelle des Songs wieder eingesetzt werden.
