A vivid, imaginative response to the sensual and erotic in postwar American photography, with attention to the beauty of the nude, both male and femaleWhen photographer Coda Gray befriends a family with a special interest in a young boy, the motivation behind his special attention is difficult to grasp, "like water slipping through our fingers." Can a man innocently love a boy who is not his own?Using fiction to reveal the truths about families, communities, art objects, love, and mourning, Like a Lake tells the story of ten-year-old Nico, who lives with his father (an Italian- American architect) and his mother (a Japanese-American sculptor who learned how to draw while interned during World War II). Set in the 1960s, this is a story of aesthetic perfection waiting to be broken. Nico's midcentury modern house, with its Italian pottery jars along the outside and its interior lit by Japanese lanterns. The elephant-hide gray, fiberglass-reinforced plastic 1951 Eames rocking chair, with metal legs and birch runners. Clam consommé with kombu, giant kelp, yuzu rind, and a little fennel-in each bowl, two clams opened like a pair of butterflies, symbols of the happy couple. Nico's boyish delight in developing photographs under the red safety light of Coda's "Floating Zendo"- the darkroom boat that he keeps on Lake Tahoe. The lives of Nico, his parents, and Coda embody northern California's postwar landscape, giving way to fissures of alternative lifestyles and poetic visions. Author Carol Mavor addresses the sensuality and complexity of a son's love for his mother and that mother's own erotic response to it. The relationship between the mother and son is paralleled by what it means for a boy to be a model for a male photographer and to be his muse. Just as water can freeze into snow and ice, melt back into water, and steam, love takes on new forms with shifts of atmosphere. Like a Lake's haunting images and sensations stay with the reader

The Routledge Companion to Literature and Emotion shows how the "affective turn" in the humanities applies to literary studies. Deftly combining the scientific elements with the literary, the book provides a theoretical and topical introduction to reading literature and emotion. Looking at a variety of formats including novels, drama, film, graphic fiction, and lyric poetry the book also includes focus on specific authors such as Shakespeare, Chaucer, Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, and Viet Thanh Nguyen. The volume introduces the theoretical groundwork, covering such categories as affect theory, affective neuroscience, cognitive science, evolution, and history of emotions. It examines the range of emotions that play a special role in literature, including happiness, fear, aesthetic delight, empathy, and sympathy, as well as aspects of literature (style, narrative voice, and others) that bear on emotional response. Finally, it explores ethical and political concerns that are often intertwined with emotional response, including racism, colonialism, disability, ecology, gender, sexuality, and trauma. This is a crucial guide to the ways in which new, interdisciplinary understandings of emotion and affect—in fields from neuroscience to social theory--are changing the study of literature and of the ways those new understandings are impacted by work on literature also

To commit oneself by way of giving one´s word is a basic condition of social life. Promise is at work in morality, in law, but also in love. It therefore provides a view of the relationship between these different forms of social commitment. Because a promise can never guarantee its own effect, but must always suppose it, it raises the question of how binding through self-commitment can succeed in all its various fields of application. The contributions making up this volume examine this question at the interface of law and literature.

Max Rohstock examines the metaphysics of the Neoplatonic tradition and J. G. Fichte. Firstly, he finds love to be the central principle that grounds the philosophy of Plotinus, Proclus, Dionysius, Eriugena, Cusanus and Fichte. Secondly, he demonstrates that the metaphysical speculations of Neoplatonism and Fichte do not merely coincide in certain aspects. Rather, they demonstrate profound systematic parallels that help to understand why the often-proclaimed abyss between pre- and post-Kantian philosophy is misleading. Both theses are justified on the basis of the often-misunderstood concept of metaphysical transcendence.

Echoing the writings of their American counterparts, Filipino evangelicals have published bestselling books on love and sex. These books appeal because of their practical tips, often narrated in conversational Tagalog and English. We turn to some of the most influential books in this article. These works exhort their readers to embrace sexual purity in preparation for the one God intends for them—"God's best." Although decidedly evangelical, these writings are packaged within the language of a secular genre—love and relationships—known for espousing more liberal views on romance and sexuality. Two rhetorical techniques matter: (1) the simultaneous promotion and disavowal of courtship; and (2) the use of religious testimony. The article ends with critical reflections on evangelicalism as a countercultural movement in Philippine society.

This contribution, within the framework of the research project on values in Judeo-Christian sources and traditions, aims to highlight the multiplicity of values which the figure of Ruth carries in the book dedicated to her. Looking at the plot of the narration, one can see how the theme of values, starting from Ruth, broadens and is present in the other protagonists of the narration, particularly in Boaz. After having presented the most relevant features of Ruth character that define her as ≫woman of valor≪, the article considers the need to place the narrative in the biblical canon, mentioning particularly the Jewish one, without ignoring the specificities of the positioning of the narration within the Greek and Latin canon and in the different Christian confessions. The contribution shows how the figure of Ruth in the Jewish canon is closely connected to the two books that precede (Proverbs) and follow (Song of Songs) the story dedicated to her and how the canonical position enables a better understanding of the value system transmitted by the three texts and their message Prispevek je del raziskovalnega projekta o vrednotah v judovsko-krščanskih virih in tradicijah, ki želi poudariti mnogoterost vrednot, ki jih posreduje Rutin lik v knjigi, ki ji je posvečena.

In Antigone's Sisters, Lenart Škof explores the power of love in our world. Focusing on Antigone, Savitri, and Mary, the book offers an investigation into various feminine figures from a variety of philosophical, mythological, theological, and literary contexts. The book also elaborates on the feminine aspects of selected concepts from modern philosophical texts, such as the Matrix in Jakob Böhme, Clara in F. W. J. Schelling, beyng in Martin Heidegger, chóra in Jacques Derrida, and breath in Luce Irigaray's thought. With its new interpretation of Antigone and related readings of Irigaray, Kristeva, and Ettinger, Antigone's Sisters aims to identify some of the reasons for this forgetting of love, and to show that it is only love that can bring peace to our ethically disrupted world.
