    We consider a platform that charges commission rates and subscription fees to sellers and buyers for facilitating transactions but does not directly control the transaction prices, which are determined by the traders. Buyers and sellers are divided into types, and we represent the compatibility between different types using a bipartite network. Traders are heterogeneous in terms of their valuations, and different types have possibly different value distributions. Buyers may have additional value for trading with some seller types. The platform chooses commissions-subscriptions to maximize its revenues. Two salient features of most online platforms are that they do not dictate the transaction prices, and use commissions/subscriptions for extracting revenues. We shed light on how these commissions/subscriptions should be set in networked markets.Using tools from convex optimization and combinatorics, we obtain tractable methods for computing the optimal commissions/subscriptions and provide insights on revenues and welfare. We provide a tractable convex optimization formulation to calculate the revenue-maximizing commissions/subscriptions, and establish that, typically, different types should be charged different commissions/subscriptions depending on their network positions. We establish that the latter result holds even when the traders on each side have identical value distributions, and in this setting we provide lower and upper bounds on the platform's revenues in terms of the supply-demand imbalance across the network. Motivated by simpler schemes used in practice, we show that the revenue loss can be unbounded when all traders on the same side are charged the same commissions/subscriptions, and bound the revenue loss in terms of the supply-demand imbalance across the network. Charging only buyers or only sellers leads to at least half of the optimal revenues, when different types on the same side can be charged differently. Our results highlight the suboptimality of commonly used payment schemes, and showcase the importance of accounting for the compatibility between different user types. Under mild assumptions, we establish that a revenue-maximizing platform achieves at least 2/3 of the maximum achievable social welfare

    Die kumulative Dissertationsschrift nutzt theoretische Ansätze der kritischen Management- und Organisationsforschung als gemeinsamen theoretischen Bezugspunkt zur Analyse der Wechselwirkungen zwischen Geschäftsmodellen, Unternehmenszielen, managementseitigen Kontroll- und Einflussmechanismen, organisationalen Beschäftigungssystemen, und den resultierenden Rahmenbedingungen von Arbeit und Beschäftigung aus einer machttheoretischen Perspektive. Der empirische Fokus liegt auf Unternehmen im Bereich der niedrig- bis mittelqualifizierten Dienstleistungen. Im Rahmen des ersten Papiers (Kap.2, „Total institutions revisited: What can Goffman’s approach tell us about ‘oppressive’control and ‘problematic’conditions of work and employment in contemporary business organizations?“) wird eine qualitativ-empirische Analyse der Machtbeziehungen im Kontext sogenannter Hard-Discount Food-Retailer vorgenommen. Das zweite Papier (Kap.3, „The Dynamics of Power and Resistance in Platform-based On-demand Labour Arrangements: A Literature Review through the Lens of Socio-political Theory“) betrachtet in Form einer systematischen Übersichtsarbeit den bisherigen Kenntnisstand zur Rolle der Machtverhältnisse zwischen unterschiedlichen Stakeholdern in der Plattformökonomie mit besonderem Fokus auf kommerziell orientierte ‚Service-On-Demand‘-Plattformen. Das dritte Papier (Kap.4, „A ‘Circuits of Power’-based Perspective on Algorithmic Management and Labour in the Gig Economy“) entwickelt ausgehend von Cleggs theoretischem Modell der „Circuits of Power“ ein Analyseschemata zur vergleichenden Längsschnittbetrachtung von Machtprozessen in der Plattformökonomie.

    A key benefit of using car sharing services (relative to car ownership) is that they are more cost effective. Car sharing firms offer a menu of pricing plans to make this happen. The two most common plans are flat-rate and pay-per-use pricing. However, little is known about how consumers choose among these pricing plans. In this study, we analyze consumers’ choices between pay-per-use and flat-rate pricing using data from a car sharing provider in a large European city. We show that over 40% of customers make nonoptimal pricing plan choices (i.e., they do not choose the cost minimizing plan). In contrast to previous research, we find a prevalent and time-persistent pay-per-use bias; i.e., we find little evidence that consumers “learn”. We propose three potential explanations for the existence and persistence of this bias. First, we suggest that customers underestimate their usage. Second, we propose that customers have a preference for flexibility, leading them to pay more. Finally, we show that the physical context, such as weather, increases the likelihood of a pay-per-use bias. We suggest that the pay-per-use bias may be the prevalent tariff choice bias in the Sharing Economy.

    The sharing economy, facilitated by technology and social media, has grown rapidly across the world. The sharing economy is still in a fledgling phase, so relatively little research has been carried out on it. By classifying the existing and potential users, the purpose of the study is to investigate effects of perceptions on utilities, attitude, satisfaction, loyalty, and intention to use for both cases of B2C and P2P car-sharing. Study 1 examines the effects of the level of utility related to the levels of satisfaction and loyalty to existing users and intentions to use and expected satisfaction to potential users of B2C car-sharing, while Study 2 investigates the effects of their intention and levels of expected satisfaction to potential users of P2P car-sharing. This study collected the data via online and offline survey and applied statistical analyses including factor analysis, regression analysis, and ANOVA. The results revealed that the effect of perceived utilities on attitude differ for existing and potential users, and also for cases of B2C and P2P car-sharing. The findings of this study have provided managerial, theoretical, and policy implications

    We study the effect of Airbnb’s smart-pricing algorithm on the racial disparity in the daily revenue earned by Airbnb hosts. Our empirical strategy exploits Airbnb’s introduction of the algorithm and its voluntary adoption by hosts as a quasi-natural experiment. Among those who adopted the algorithm, the average nightly rate decreased by 5.7%, but average daily revenue increased by 8.6%. Before Airbnb introduced the algorithm, white hosts earned $12.16 more in daily revenue than Black hosts, controlling for observed characteristics of the hosts, properties, and locations. Conditional on its adoption, the revenue gap between white and Black hosts decreased by 71.3%. However, Black hosts were significantly less likely than white hosts to adopt the algorithm, so at the population level, the revenue gap increased after the introduction of the algorithm. We show that the algorithm’s price recommendations are not affected by the host’s race—but we argue that the algorithm’s race-blindness may lead to pricing that is sub- optimal, and more so for Black hosts than for white hosts. We also show that the algorithm’s effectiveness at mitigating the Airbnb revenue gap is limited by the low rate of algorithm adoption among Black hosts. We offer recommendations with which policy makers and Airbnb may advance smart-pricing algorithms in mitigating racial economic disparities

Denn dies schließt von den großen Verheerungen bis zu heimlichen und diskreten Schrecknissen das Konflikthafte im Behausten ein und demoliert es zugleich. Die Beiträger_innen thematisieren verschiedene Ebenen des Unbehausten aus kunst- und kulturwissenschaftlicher, philosophischer, historischer, ethnographischer, architekturtheoretischer, psychiatrischer sowie künstlerischer Perspektive.

    Nowadays Airbnb represents a popular subject both within professional journals as well as on industry platforms. Most of them focus on the aspect of the competition of Airbnb and the hospitality industry - hotels, guesthouses as well as apartments. This research paper focuses a slightly different aspect: approaches of selected European destinations within their attitude towards Airbnb. Within this research a combined survey from various angles is conducted: identification of the 10 European destinations most represented on Airbnb (by offered accommodation - reference date Oct 15, 2018), potential course of action from destination management point of view as well as enforced course of action within the selected destination. As part of the analysis a ranking of the range of Airbnb offers within the correspondent destinations is set up.
