Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice in Cyberspace: Fan Fiction and Cognitive Narratology
    Beitrag von: Redaktion avldigital.de

I examine how the storyworld of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is re-presented in fan fiction from the Derbyshire Writers’ Guild (Dwiggie.com). I argue that, unlike Austen, the members of this fan community tend to prioritise the individual experiences of characters and their readership. I examine this corpus through the lens of cognitive narrative theories. These theories provide a conceptual toolbox that makes it easier to discuss fan fiction, related reader comments, and other...

(Re)writing the Machine: Modernism, Gender and Technology
    Beitrag von: Redaktion avldigital.de

This project researches the relations between literature, gender and technology in the works of three early twentieth-century British women writers: Bryher (pseudonym of Annie Winifred Ellerman), Mina Loy and Nancy Cunard. It starts from the assumption that gender and technology are cultural constructs that are co-produced. Building on the work of gender theorist Judith Butler, scientist Donna Haraway and literary scholar N. Katherine Hayles, I examine the ways in which the selected women...

Enlightenment at War: Epic Poetry, the Citizen and Discursive Bridges to the Military (1740-1800)
    Beitrag von: Redaktion avldigital.de

In current debates about Western identity, the Enlightenment is associated with reason and civic emancipation, but not with war enthusiasm. It was however Enlightenment thinking that brought representations of civic and military behaviour into a single discursive realm. This new discursive structure made it possible to define both war critique and war propaganda on a civic basis. This project is the first to analyse this structure. It will therefore open up a new field of Enlightenment- studies ...

Poet-Collectors during the Cold War: Poetry as Queer Archive
    Beitrag von: Redaktion avldigital.de

This project explores the ways in which American experimental poets struggled to create poetry that countered the Cold War ideology, and examines how the method of collecting-archiving was used in their efforts. The Cold War ‘containment culture’ suppressed all expressions of difference and deviance, ranging from the ‘red scare’ of communism to the ‘lavender scare’ of homosexuality. Everything was classified and contained within categories, so as to separate the (hetero)normative from the...

Conjuring Phantoms: A Comparative Study of Trauma in Comics
    Beitrag von: Redaktion avldigital.de

Maaheen Ahmed's postdoctoral project is on trauma in contemporary comics, relying on a broad definition of trauma to encompass the aftermath of large-scale events (the two world wars, 9/11) as well as the reverberations of psychological damage in difficult personal situations.

The Voices of Literature: Radio, Periodicals, and Cultural Conflict (1922-1939)
    Beitrag von: Redaktion avldigital.de

This project is situated at the intersection of periodical studies and literary radio studies. With the introduction of sound studies into literary studies, radio has become an important focal point in modernist studies. Modernist authors made use of radiogenic features in their work and engaged in broadcasting. If radio is no longer the forgotten medium it once was, the relationship between the radio and the periodical press has not yet been well understood. Literary scholars focus on either...

Imagining Climate Change: Fiction, Memory, and the Anthropocene
    Beitrag von: Redaktion avldigital.de

This FWO-funded research project (2016-2020) explores how imaginative literature has responded to the representational and existential challenges thrown up by climate change. It combines theoretical argument with case studies of Anglophone literary texts exemplifying major trends in climate fiction or “cli-fi,” particularly to do with issues of memory. It consists of three interrelated strands. Focusing on the popular device of a historian, geologist, or archivist looking back from a...

Hybrid literature, hybrid agency: the status of the literary text in Edward Said’s cultural analysis
    Beitrag von: Redaktion avldigital.de

In this project I investigate the status of literary artifacts in Edward Said’s theory and reading practice and his correlating conceptualization of agency. Previous scholars have identified an irreconcilable tension in Said’s oeuvre between concepts from two supposedly opposing philosophies: humanism and anti-humanism. Instead of foregrounding this dichotomy and takings its irreconcilability for granted, I focus on literary texts as a critical locus and entry-point to investigate the concept of...

Reassembling Modernism: Anglo-French Networks, Periodicals, Literary Analysis
    Beitrag von: Redaktion avldigital.de

This project examines Anglo-French literary networks at the beginning of the twentieth century. If scholars have traditionally focused on American, British, or French authors in isolation, the present study explores their interconnections. It uncovers a number of hitherto unstudied relations and hints at their importance for the development of modernism as an international cultural movement. In order to map the cultural networks between American, British and French authors, a flexible...

Antigone in/as Transition. A Study on the Performing Arts Status Quo in Europe (in its Transcontinental Contexts)
    Beitrag von: Redaktion avldigital.de

The lack of analyses of contemporary Antigone performances was already noted in 1991 (Loraux 1991), and since then it still has not been adequately addressed. Antigone in/as Transition brings together politics and psychoanalysis/philosophy from a Performance Studies perspective. Strengthening specifically Performance Studies-based analyses within the larger field of Antigone Studies provides crucial insights, because performances are processes of perception in which subjects and political...

Painting Themselves: A Transnational Approach to National Self-Portraiture
    Beitrag von: Redaktion avldigital.de

This PhD project focused on a group of sketches, which were popular throughout Europe around 1840. The sketches, bearing titles like "les Français peints par eux-mêmes" and "Los Españoles pintados por sí mismos", aimed to underline national identity through detailed description of common types, both in text and image. Within the project, I have compared English, French, Belgian, Dutch and Spanish sketches with the aim to reconstruct the connections between authors, drawers, engravers and...

It is directed by Marianne Van Remoortel and based at the Department of Literary Studies , Ghent University , Belgium.
