Transdisciplinary research is research not only on, but also for and, most of all, with practitioners. In the research framework of transdisciplinarity, scholars and practitioners collaborate throughout research projects with the aim of mutual learning. This paper shows the value transdisciplinarity can add to media linguistics. It does so by investigating the digital literacy shift in journalism: the change, in the last two decades, from the predominance of a writing mode that we have termed focused writing to a mode we have called writing-by-the-way. Large corpora of writing process data have been generated and analyzed with the multimethod approach of progression analysis in order to combine analytical depth with breadth. On the object level of doing writing in journalism, results show that the general trend towards writing-by-the-way opens up new niches for focused writing. On a meta level of doing research, findings explain under what conditions transdisciplinarity allows for deeper insights into the medialinguistic object of investigation.

Keynote ; This keynote uses the case of collaborative professional text production to discuss the concept of linguistic practice from both theoretical and practical perspectives. By drawing on large corpora of real-life data and applying the multi-method approach of progression analysis, practices are identified that allow for flexible planning in the dynamic system of text production. Findings show that key features of the text production practices under investigation, as well as of the writing phases they dominate, scale up. This means that the patterns found in both practices and phases recur in similar forms throughout the various levels and time frames of text production. They are manifested during the split seconds it takes to make stylistic decisions as well as over the days, weeks and months of organizational document cycling. This understanding of scalability reaches far beyond former concepts of planning in text production research. In conclusion, it appears text production research conducted in real-life contexts sharpens theoretical approaches to linguistic practices on one hand, and contributes to sustainably solving practical problems on the other.

“What do people want to do when they write − and what do they actually do?” (Perrin 2003, 825). This question in the introduction to an issue of the Journal of Pragmatics has contributed to shifting the focus of writing research from cognitive to social and pragmatic aspects of text production, forgrounding the relevance of writers’ pragmatic competence. Text processes and production are influenced by writers’ cultural and biographical background, (professional) role in the respective communicative setting, the concrete communicative situation, as well as the communicative patterns of the community of practice (Wenger, 1998). At the same time, text evaluation and text impact depend on readers’ perception and involvement. These processes, driving and driven by language use in sociocultural contexts, trigger the topics and foci of research in pragmatics (Verschueren 2001). Research so far in this field has provided evidence of pragmatic competence as a key sub-competence of writing and writers (Konstantinidou, Hoefele & Kruse, 2016). In our panel, we focus on pragmatic aspects of writing in specific sociocultural context, social settings, and situations of language use. We investigate both the development and teaching of pragmatic competence in multilingual and professional settings. By doing so, we reflect on the relation of pragmatic competence with the quality of both writing processes and text products and discuss the challenges of measuring pragmatic competence using automated assessment methods.

This chapter explains why practices of writing are key for managers and leaders. It draws on two action research case studies that illustrate the needs for and benefits of empirically based knowledge on writing in management and leadership roles. An overview of the state of research shows that, besides multitudes of analyses of managerial genres as final products, only little research has been done to understand and improve the dynamic processes of writing in the field. The chapter concludes that future directions of research must include investigating how the rapidly increasing amount of written management and leadership communication comes into being and how its quality can be improved through management education. The structure of the chapter takes the readers from the topic’s relevance (Section 1) to the fragmentary state of research (2), the two case studies (3, 4), and suggestions to close the research gap through a dynamic approach (5).

; How and why do linguistic gaps, breaks and contradictions get into a text? This article demonstrates the influence of the writing process on the language of a journalistic text. Section 1 outlines the method used to record writing processes at the workplace, the progression analysis. Section 2 describes the technique employedin the example case, buffer-assisted text reproduction. Section 3 highlights the traces of this technique in the finished text, coherency breaks at seams of the patchwork. For the case under consideration connections between the workplace, the repertoire of writing strategies employed and the language of the final text become visible and assessable.

This volume aims at contributing to an interpretive approach to writing and its dynamics. It offers a general scope on the process-product interface by multiplying the points of view on both the process and the product and their links. The book presents new findings and perspectives in the study of language and writing, both theoretical and methodological (e.g. dual process models of writing, pragmatics of writing, linguistic analysis of psycholinguistic units such as bursts of production). It also presents new tools for a longitudinal approach to the writing steps, key-stroke logging with integrated linguistic modules, and textometric analysis of written texts. The volume is composed of five sections that highlight different approaches to writing from the viewpoint of multiple disciplines: Anthropology, Cognitive Psycholinguistics, Communication Studies, Didactics (Applied Linguistics), Discourse Analysis, Literacy, Sociolinguistics and Text Genetics. This book will be relevant for scholars and students interested in writing, text analysis, literacy, learning and teaching.

Doing writing research from an applied linguistics perspective means investigating individual, collaborative, and organizational writing and text production as language-based activities in complex and dynamic real-life contexts. In doing so, micro and macro levels, product and process perspectives, as well as theoretical and practical questions are combined in transdisciplinary approaches. Appropriate methods have to be deliberately chosen and transparently explained across disciplinary boundaries. Methodological questions need to be clarified, such as: which method fits which problem – and how should and can various methods complement each other? In this chapter, we start from two methodologically complementary ways of doing research into real-life writing processes (Part 1). These approaches illustrate why collecting data represents a key problem in the history of writing research (2). We then outline a typology of state-of-the-art methods in writing research (3) and explain chal- lenges of combining perspectives and methods in research projects (4). This allows us to evaluate what sophisticated methodology in writing research can contribute to applied linguistics (5) and to conclude by sketching a related research roadmap (6). In the reference section, we focus on work combining approaches from writing research and applied linguistics in methodologically innovative ways (7).

In this chapter, we focus on new, hybrid forms of text production and their research. We start from the practical example of Wikipedia, and the ways in which articles are developed quickly and then refined over time by Wikipedians (Part 1). This approach illustrates transitions from a narrow to a broader orientation in writing research (2). We then develop a framework for the state-of-the-art analysis of writing as a focused and incidental, by-the-way activity of producing editable and storable multimodal communication offers (3). Within this framework, challenges for and controversial issues of contemporary writing research can be identified (4). This allows us to outline what such research can contribute to Applied Linguistics (5) and to sketch a related research roadmap (6). Finally, in the reference section, we list key publications that explain writing research beyond single modes and media (7).

In this chapter, we systematize and discuss research on writing and text production as a highly interrelated mode of language use. We start from two examples of professional writing that complement each other: one is about writing in financial communication, the other about not writing in public discourse (Part 1). These examples help us illustrate the transition from a detached to an integrative view of writing in text production research (2). We then develop a framework for the integrative analysis of writing as a key mode of language use (3). Within this framework, challenges for and controversial issues of contemporary writing research are identified (4). This allows us to outline what such research can contribute to and benefit from applied linguistics (5) and to sketch a related research roadmap (6). In the reference section, we focus on work explaining the interplay of writing and other modes of language use as mental and societal processes (7).
