Set in London in the sixties, the action of 'Saved' takes place amidst the cultural poverty and frustration of a generation of young people on the dole and living on council estates. The play opens on Len and Pam preparing to have sex and asking each other their names. Pam's parents are deadlocked in a stultified, silent marriage. Len stays with the family as a lodger despite being rejected by Pam, in order to keep an eye on her neglected baby. Pam leaves the baby with Frank, whom she claims is its father, leading to one of modern theatre's most shocking scenes.

A woman sitting alone hears a constant knocking at the door, but no one is there. Her husband returns and tells her of an extraordinary meeting with an old woman found roaming in a ruined part of the city. Then a stranger comes to the door, like a visitor from an earlier, lost world. What follows is tragic and absurdly funny until both seem to melt into a strange hallucinatory vision of the future. 'Have I None' was first presented in November 2000 at Castle Vale Artsite, Birmingham.

'Bingo' uses the last days of a brooding and unheroic William Shakespeare to accuse art and capitalism of vile inhumanity. Historical evidence suggests that not long before his death Shakespeare agreed to the enclosure of common land near Stratford, which was beneficial to landowners such as Shakespeare, but disastrous for small tenants and the parish's poor. For Bond this incident is laced with damning echoes of King Lear's injustices, and motivates his portrayal of the writer as a bourgeois and apolitical capitalist, more occupied with his profits and rents than with the distress of those who depended on the land. 'Bingo' is a thorny cry against exploitation and passivity. It was first performed in 1973 at the Northcott Theatre, Exeter.

'Black Mass' is a concise and crucial satire set in a church in Vereeniging, South Africa. As he takes communion, the Prime Minister practises his justification for forcibly moving on a group of black people who have gathered to protest. Bond uses potent imagery and satire to discuss the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960, when police opened fire on a crowd of protestors, killing 69 people. The play originally formed part of a sequence written for the Sharpeville Massacre Tenth Anniversary Commemoration Evening, held by the Anti-Apartheid Movement at the Lyceum Theatre, London, in 1970.

'Chair' is the third play in Bond's 'The Chair Plays' trilogy. In it, Alice is looking after Billy, a young man she took in to her home - illegally - when he was a baby. One day, when she witnesses a soldier escorting an old woman, someone Alice believes she knows, to prison, she offers a kindness: the soldier has been waiting with his prisoner for over three hours; Alice offers him chair to sit on. This basic, human gesture explodes the secure and private world that Alice had built to protect herself and Billy. 'Chair' was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 7 April 2000.

'Derek' is a short farce with the significance of social commentary, telling a story of waste and exploitation. The play is a comic but sharp critique of social stratifications which allow those with a privileged background to steal the life and self of those less fortunate, and send them to die in wars they do not understand. The Royal Court Theatre produced Bond's surreal drama 'Early Morning' in 1967 despite a total ban by the Lord Chamberlain's office. It portrays a lesbian relationship between Queen Victoria and Florence Nightingale, the royal princes as Siamese twins, Disraeli and Prince Albert plotting a coup and the whole dramatis personae damned to a cannibalistic heaven after falling off Beachy Head.

Originally written in French and translated into English by Beckett, 'Endgame' was given its first London performance at the Royal Court Theatre in 1957. Outside lies a world of death. Inside the room the blind, impervious Hamm sits in a wheelchair while his lame servant, Clov, scuttles about obeying his orders. Each depends fractiously on the other: Hamm alone knows the combination of the larder while Clov is his master's eyes and last remnant of human contact. The only other survivors are Hamm's legless parents, Nagg and Nell, who squat in dustbins upstage and die during the play.

Liz is a troubled woman, who read a violent story in a newspaper and cannot get it out of her head. This obsession drives away her partner Richard; or maybe he left because she was pregnant with Dan. Years later, when Dan is old enough to look after himself, he ends up looking after his mother, sourcing her drugs so she can escape the thoughts in her head. It is a venture doomed to failure; and his situation is not improved when Richard returns to meet his son. 'A Window: a Triptych' is a play about the cruelty that exists even when there is love. It was first staged at Golden Hillock School, Birmingham, in October 2009.

To be sane or not to be sane, that is the question - and if not, then be mad and all that follows. Edward Bond takes from the Greek and Jacobean drama the fundamental classical problems of the family and war to vividly picture our collapsing society. The war is raging, Dea, a heroine, has committed a terrible act and has been exiled. When she meets someone from her past, she is forcefully confronted by the broken society that drove her to commit her crimes.

A wild storm shakes a small East Anglian seaside village and sets off a series of events that changes the lives of all its residents. Set in the high Edwardian world of 1907, 'The Sea' is a fascinating blend of wild farce, high comedy, biting social satire and bleak poetic tragedy.

When a refugee breaks into Joan's cellar, she must make a choice; does she hand him into the authorities, or help him make his escape. He makes a convincing argument; represented by an actor who speaks the lines, and a dummy who embodies them, he shows how a person can do only what they must do to survive and still be deemed illegal. The play highlights the conflict between our obligations to society's laws and our desire to help one another, and shows how these often irresolvable duties can lead to catastrophe for everyone involved. 'The Under Room' was first performed at the Roade School, Northampton, in 2005.
