    "Terence and the verb 'to be' in Latin is the first in-depth study of the verb 'to be' in Latin (esse) and some of its hidden properties. Like the English 'be' (e.g. it's), the Latin forms of esse could undergo phonetic reduction or contraction. This phenomenon is largely unknown since classical texts have undergone a long process of transmission over the centuries, which has altered or deleted its traces. Although they are often neglected by scholars and puzzling to students, the use of contracted forms is shown to be widespread and significant. These forms expose the clitic nature of esse, which also explains other properties of the verb, including its participation in a prosodic simplification with a host ending in -s (sigmatic ecthlipsis), a phenomenon which is also discussed in the volume. After an introduction on methodology, the volume discusses the linguistic significance of such phenomena, focusing in particular on analysis of their behaviour in the plays of the ancient Roman playwright, Terence.0Combining traditional scholarship with the use of digital resources, the volume explores the orthographic, phonological, semantic, and syntactic aspects of the verb esse, revealing that cliticization is a key feature of the verb 'to be' in Latin, and that contractions deserve a place within its paradigm."-- dust jacket Introduction.     In De Amphitheatro, Lipsius and his tutor Florentius carry on a dialogue during a walk through their beloved Rome. They discuss all aspects of amphitheaters, as for example the gods to whom they were dedicated and the people that commissioned them. But the main part is devoted to the Colosseum and its functions, etc. De Amphitheatris quae extra Romam libellus, the second part, is a description of different amphitheaters outside Rome, such as in Verona, Pola and Nîmes. In both books Lipsius cites many classical authors, poets and church fathers, as usual. In the introduction the text of this edition comes up, but also Lipsius' observations in his period in Leiden, when he wrote these books

    Las literaturas europeas asumieron la herencia de la retórica clásica con diferencias notables según las tradiciones nacionales. La diversa traslación de los conceptos ha determinado una perspectiva distinta en cada literatura que complica el estudio de la literatura narrativa europea, justo en el momento en que las traducciones y adaptaciones de las obras se intensificaron. Algunos conceptos tradicionales en la composición literaria se hicieron imprescindibles en las narraciones que llegaron a lectores de toda Europa. Al mismo tiempo, la novela se desarrolló impulsada por la tradición mejorando los recursos expresivos, diversificando géneros y temas. La historia de la novela francesa, inglesa y alemana ha sido revisada desde una perspectiva actual en los primeros capitulos de este volumen. Además, se presenta una selección de textos para mostrar la recepción y evolución de los conceptos retórico-poéticos en la preceptiva y en algunas novelas representativas entre 1650 y 1900. Esta recepción se observa en la literatura espa~{nola a través de las obras de Arpa y López, Artiga, Barberá y Sánchez, Capmany, Estrada, Gil de Zárate, Giner de los Rios, Gómez Hermosilla, Hornero, Marin y Morales, Mata y Araujo entre otros. En la literatura francesa se recogen las referencias de la Encyclopédie, y de las obras de Batteux, Bouhours, Boileau-Despréaux, Du Marsais, Huet y otros. La recepción en la literatura inglesa se comprueba sobre todo en las obras de Blair, Campbell, y Coleridge. Por otro lado, comprobamos la evolución de los conceptos motivada por la estética en el pensamiento literario de los hermanos Schlegel y de Jean Paul Richter The various European literatures have assimilated classical rhetoric diversely according to their native traditions. This transference of the rhetorical concepts determined a critical tradition peculiar to each literature just at the time in which translations and adaptations increased enormously. However, some traditional concepts of literary composition became essential in the narratives that reached readers from all over Europe. This volume consists of two parts: -A systematic compilation of excerpts from treatises on rhetoric, literature and aesthetics in Latin, Spanish, French, English and German belonging to the period 1650-1900. The excerpts correspond to definitions of rhetorical figures organized, on the one hand, according to the reception of the concept in each literature, and, on the other, according to the critique of the classical definition. -An introduction where the evolution of the concepts in each literature is explained to serve as the theoretical and critical framework for prose narratives and the novel. The list of sources appears at the end of the volume. Among relevant names and texts used from the different literatures there stand out, amog others, the 1788 translation of the French Encyclopedia, Arpa and Lopez, Artiga, Barbera and Sanchez, Capmany, Estrada, Gil de Zarate, Giner de los Rios, and Gomez Hermosilla (Spanish); the Encyclopedie, Batteux, Bouhours, Boileau-Despreaux, Du Marsais, and Huet (French); Blair, Campbell, and Coleridge (English); F. Schiller, the Schlegel brothers, and Jean Paul Richter (German). All the excerpts appear in their original language.
