    The world’s oldest living proverb, from around 3,800 years ago, is found on a tablet from the Assyrian empire. The proverb has been documented from later eras, northwest from the Middle East up into Europe, as far northwestas Britain. Evidence is given here now demonstrating that the proverb is also found to the south of the Middle East, in Ethiopia. In some places, a cat is substituted for the dog, but the Ethiopian evidence indicates that the dog version of the proverb is original.

    The text presented in this article is the earliest homily in honour of the Archangel Uriel. The homily is attested in two copies: the earlier is EMML 1835 (fols 166ra–181vb) copied during the time of Emperor Zärʾa Yaʿǝqob (r 1434–1468), and the other is EMML 1841 (fols 137vb–151ra) dated to the seventeenth century. The text makes significant use of 4 Ezra and 1 Enoch, depicting Uriel as angelus interpres and helper of Enoch and Ezra.

    The main themes of the text, occasionally ascribed to Ezra (Salathiel), are the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, the end of the world, the future rulers of Ethiopia, and the honouring of the Sabbaths. It is cast in the spirit of 4 Ezra, quoting it and Jubilees occasionally and extensively. As in 4 Ezra, its author is interested in knowing and declaring the future to call the faithful to observe the law and the ordinances. Reckoning the time by cycles, aqmar, provides him the revelation of future events ‘with exact dates’. The text, composed before the sixteenth century, is one more source of Gǝʿǝz apocalyptic literature. The article is an edition and translation of it as preserved in EMML 6429, fols 9v–39r.

    A description of the collection of Ethiopian manuscripts in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich, can be found in the volumes of the Union Catalogue of Oriental Manuscripts in Germany (Verzeichnis der orientalischen Handschriften in Deutschland, VOHD). However, by 2016, the library’s holdings had been augmented by a further twenty Ethiopian manuscripts: some were donations, but most had been purchased atauctions. They are presented in this article according to the rules of the VOHD. Of the four Psalters, Cod. aethiop. 179, probably dating from the sixteenth century based on paleographic criteria, should be highlighted. Furthermore there are seven parchment scrolls and two leporello manuscripts. Also worth mentioning is a Senkessār for the second part of the year, as well as a Deggwā and several other manuscripts, all withillustrations that have been added at a later date to the original text but which have a characteristic style or use wellknown motifs. Cod. aethiop. 173 is also interesting since there are not many other such manuscripts, though at first sight the title ʿEnzira sebḥat simply suggests a common hymn.

    This article introduces a new witness to the Chronicle of John of Nikiu (EMML 7919). It analyses the text of this witness alongside the four previously known Ethiopic manuscripts of this work. The article considers the current state of research on the Chronicle of John of Nikiu, including an examination of the textual witnesses, the language of the original composition, and the biographical and historical information of the chronicler. The textual analysis of EMML 7919 demonstrates a strong relation with the text attested in ANL Conti Rossini 27, which suggests that EMML 7919 is highly valuable for the reconstruction of the Ethiopic version of the Chronicle of John of Nikiu. Finally, there is a catalogue entry for EMML 7919, which details the textual and codicological features of the manuscript.

    „Ehre“ ist im Kontext religiös motivierter Auseinandersetzungen zwischen radikalisierten Fundamental-Islamisten und der westlich-christlichen Welt offenbar eine weiterhin schwierige Frage. Dabei glaubte man diese Dichotomie, die sich auf Orient und Okzident bezieht, in der öffentlichen Debatte überwunden zu haben. Ohne an dieser Stelle auf die Medienberichterstattung bezüglich sogenannter Ehrenmorde in westlichen Gesellschaften mit verschiedenen Migrations-hintergründen eingehen zu können, noch die in Teilen problematische Haltung einer als ‚zivilisiert‘ und ‚westlich‘ definierten Gesellschaft gegenüber einer aufgrund ihrer Ehrkonzepte als ‚primitiv‘ und ‚barbarisch‘ definierten Gesellschaft im allgemeinen diskutieren zu können, fragt die vorliegende Studie mit Ansätzen aus Anthropologie, Philosophie und Gender Studies nach der Ehre-Beziehung der Geschlechter in einigen literarischen Beispielen vom 16.-17. Jahrhundert (Calderón, Tirso de Molina, Shakespeare, Molière) über das 19. Jahrhundert (Baudelaire, Edgar Allan Poe) bis zum 20. Jahrhundert (Lorca). ; In the context of religiously motivated conflicts between radicalized fundamental Islamists and the Western Christian world, "honour" remains a difficult question. At the same time the public believed to have overcome the dichotomy of Orient vs. Occident. Though, we cannot delve at this point into the media coverage of so-called honour killings in Western societies with different migration backgrounds, nor into the problematic attitude of a ‘civilized’ and ‘western’ defined society towards one that is defined as ‘primitive’ and ‘barbaric’ due to its concepts of honour. The present study explores the role of “honour” and gender relations in literary examples from the 16th-17th century (Calderón, Tirso de Molina, Shakespeare) to the 19th century (Baudelaire, Edgar Allan Poe) up to the 20th century (Lorca), relying on theoretical approaches from anthropology, philosophy and gender studies.

    Eine außergewöhnliche, fingierte Verwandtschaftsrelation bestand zwischen der späteren Herausgeberin sowie Schriftstellerin Marie de Gournay (1565-1645) und dem Verfasser der Essais, Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592). 1588 trafen sich die junge Unbekannte und der arrivierte Renaissancedenker zum ersten Mal in Paris und schlossen einen Bund (alliance). Fortan nahmen sie auf einander Bezug als père d’alliance und fille d’alliance. Die lebensweltliche Tragweite dieser früh-neuzeitlichen Allianz zwischen dem „geistigen Ziehvater“ Montaigne und seiner „geistigen Ziehtochter“ Marie de Gournay ist nur schwerlich fassbar, handelte es sich doch weder um eine durch Blutsverwandtschaft legitimierte, noch um eine rechtlich beglaubigte Verwandtschaftsbeziehung. Eine komparative Lektüre der Essais und verschiedener, von Marie de Gournay verfasster Texte lässt allerdings den Schluss zu, dass eine Kontinuitätslinie zwischen fille d’alliance und père d‘alliance auf einer textuellen Ebene festzustellen ist: Das semantische Feld rund um die Metaphorik des textuell erzeugten, geistigen, „vererbten“ und letztlich „verwaisten“ Kindes findet sich sowohl intra- als auch intertextuell zwischen den Essais sowie von Marie de Gournay verfassten Texten aufgespannt. Die Gesamtwerke Montaignes und Marie de Gournays, Les Essais beziehungsweise Les Advis, werden textuell „vererbt“, indem sie metaphorisch als „geistige Kinder“ einem Vormund angetragen werden. Einzelne Passagen der untersuchten Texte und Paratexte fungieren somit als autoreferenzieller und metatextueller Aushandlungsort nicht nur der Konstitution, sondern auch der Überlieferung jener schutzbedürftigen geistigen „(Waisen)Kinder“ (orphelins). Unter Bezug auf affekttheoretische und praxeologische Ansätze wird das „textuelle Kind“ bei Marie de Gournay als affektive Transmissionspraxis beleuchtet. ; French moral philosopher Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) and his ‘covenant daughter’, Marie de Gournay (1565-1645), shared a special bond. When the 30 years younger, until then unknown woman and her idol met in Paris in 1588, they forged an alliance beyond blood ties, calling each other ‘spiritual father (père d’alliance) and ‘spiritual daughter’(fille d’alliance). When Montaigne visited Marie de Gournay in her family’s home in Picardie, the father-daughter couple worked together on the so called “Bordeaux copy” (1588) of Montaigne’s main work, LesEssais. After her ‘father’ died, Marie de Gournay became a writer in her own right as well as the editor, preserver and defender of Montaigne’s oeuvre. Surprisingly enough, although she had never been officially adopted by Montaigne, hisfille d’alliancewas accepted as Montaigne’s spiritual ‘heir’ by his family (his widow and his natural daughter) as well as by the members of the Republic of Letters. However, scholarly attempts to define this unique relationship between the elderly writer and the young erudite had to cope with the nonexistence of historical and juridical sources. On a textual level, this unique bond is echoed through the metaphor of the text as a textual, spiritually born child, both in Montaigne’s as well as in Marie de Gournay’s texts. A comparative study ofLes Essais and of certain paratexts written by Marie de Gournays shows that the ‘spiritual child’ is a an intra- and transtextual phenomenon that links the texts of ‘father’ and ‘daughter’. In this paper, I argue that Montaigne’sEssais-born metaphor of the textual and spiritual child has been 'inherited' by Marie de Gournay as a social practice, fostering the affective and posthumous transmission of their main works,les Essaisandles Advis, as spiritual legacies.

    Der Beitrag zielt darauf ab, die Dynamiken magischer und ästhetischer Affekterzeugung in ihrer Historizität und gattungsspezifischen Bedingtheit am Beispiel der französischen Pastorale zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts auszuloten und erklärbar zu machen. Die im frühneuzeitlichen Denken noch fest verankerte Magie stellt, so eine Leitthese, innerdramatisch ein historisches Erklärungsmuster bereit, nach dem die affektiven Figurenbeziehungen geschlossen und gelöst werden. Gemäß der zweiten These fungiert das Spektakel in theatralischer Perspektive als Bühnenzauber zur Hervorbringung der Affekte von Staunen und Bewunderung und somit als Katalysator ästhetischen Vergnügens bei den Zuschauern, die sich so in ihrer barocken Weltsicht bestätigt sehen. ; The paper aims to explore and explain the dynamics of magical and aesthetic generating of affects in their historicity and genre-specific conditionality using the example of the French pastorale at the beginning of the 17th century. In accordance with the leading thesis, magic, that is still firmly anchored in early modern thought, provides, on the inner dramatic level, a historical explanatory pattern for the conclusion and dissolution of affective relationships between characters. According to the second thesis, on a theatrical level, the spectacle functions as ‘stage magic’ to produce the affects of wonder and admiration and thus as a catalyst of aesthetic pleasure for the spectators who find themselves confirmed in their baroque world view.

    Ausgehend von der emotionssoziologischen These, die Affekte als soziale Instrumente begreift, die immer dann auf den Plan treten, wenn für stabil geglaubte Weltbilder ins Wanken geraten, unterzieht der vorliegende Beitrag das Langgedicht La cautiva von Esteban Echeverría einer kritischen Analyse. Zum Kanon der nation-building Literatur gehörig, inszeniert der Text die Eroberung der Pampa durch zwei Geliebte sowie deren Liebestod. Liest sich der Text auf den ersten Blick als affektvolle Ausrufung einer argentinischen Nation, so offenbart sich in einer konnotativen Semantik von Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit ein zunehmend distanziertes Verhältnis zu ersterer und eine Hinwendung zu letzter. Nicht die Ureinwohner allein, sondern vielmehr das gesprochene oder geschriene Wort, mit dem sie der Text in Verbindung setzt, gilt es gegenüber der Sichtbarkeit der Schrift einzugrenzen und zu beherrschen, um dem nationalen Projekt den Weg zu bahnen. ; Based on the sociological thesis, which perceives affects as social instruments that appear whenever formerly stable worldviews start to falter, the present article subjects the long poem La cautiva by Esteban Echeverría to a critical analysis. Belonging to the canon of nation-building literature, the text stages the conquest of the Pampa by two lovers and their love death. If the text reads at first glance as an affectionate proclamation of an Argentine nation, a connotative semantics of orality and literality reveal an increasingly distant relationship with the former and a turning towards the latter. Not the indigenous people alone, but rather the spoken or shouted word with which the text connects them, is subject to limitation, thus paving the way for the visibility of the written word and facilitating the national project.

    Abstract ; The article analyzes the play and festejo Los empeños de una casa by the Mexican Golden Age playwright Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and claims that the play is a transcultural creation. In the play, the different “rooms” of the house, meaning the different parts of the festejo, allude to other cultural spaces, whether they be texts from the canon of Spanish Golden Age theater (for example by Calderón de la Barca) or Latin-American texts and spaces. The allusions to Latin-American spaces run throughout the festejo and frame it as a creole play by adapting the Spanish genre to the reality and the esthetic and epistemic context of Colonial Mexico. The article applies Gilles Deleuze’s concept of the baroque fold in order to understand the transcultural aspects of Sor Juana’s play in terms of the construction of semantic spaces. The interior and exterior spaces of Los empeños de una casa are interwoven: the house is a baroque labyrinth in which comic fortunes and misfortunes are expressed as an oscillating game between the visible and the invisible, the ephemeral and the stable. In a first step we will analyze the loa and its allegorical spaces. Secondly, we will focus on the comedia and its ironic and insightful way to challenge genre conventions. In a final step, we will read the Sainete Segundo as a commentary on creole theatre and its spaces.

    Abstract ; The article investigates the transcultural exchanges and the traces of a creole consciousness in the loa of the auto sacramental El Divino Narciso by Juana Inés de la Cruz. Our reading of this allegorical play takes the concept of belonging as a tool for the analysis of the multifaceted dynamics of cultural identification and differentiation that are deployed in this literary text from the Mexican colonial baroque of the 17th century. We will focus on three dimensions on which the author introduces differentiations that structure the topic and the action of the play: the geocultural dimension, the ethic dimension and the geopolitical dimension. In doing so, we propose to consider Juana’s creole consciousness not so much as an identity that she possesses but rather as the totality of the complex and sometimes contradictory practices of belonging that are expressed in her texts.

    OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to verify whether the postural alterations can influence the development of the varicose disease with unilateral and bilateral saphenous incompetence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 39 patients suffering from saphenous incompetence diagnosed by hemodynamic study with eco-color doppler (20 patients with bilateral venous insufficiency (VI), 19 patients with unilateral VI) have performed the gait analysis though wireless inertial sensor and baropodometry to assess the plantar pressure distribution both statically and dynamically. RESULTS: The 68% and the 60% of subjects suffering from unilateral or bilateral VI present a plantar pressure dysfunction a single foot or both feet in static and/or in dynamic. In 63% of subjects with unilateral VI the propulsion is reduced on the lower limb damaged. The number of asymmetries in walking and dysfunctions in planar pressure in both groups has been calculated. The average number of asymmetries in walking in the group of patients with unilateral VI is significantly greater (p-value=0.0075) compared to the group of patients with bilateral VI. CONCLUSIONS: Plantar pressure and increased valvo-muscular pump pressure (VMPP) are not the main etiological factors that modify the hemodynamic in walking. In unilateral cases the postural alterations may contribute to worsening or to appearance of the varicose veins. Postural disorders treatment in children of phlebopaths during the childhood could maintain the mild condition of varicose disease silent.     Smart devices and Internet-based applications (apps) are largely used in allergic rhinitis and may help to address some unmet needs. However, these new tools need to first of all be tested for privacy rules, acceptability, usability, and cost-effectiveness. Second, they should be evaluated in the frame of the digital transformation of health, their impact on health care delivery, and health outcomes. This review (1) summarizes some existing mobile health apps for allergic rhinitis and reviews those in which testing has been published, (2) discusses apps that include risk factors of allergic rhinitis, (3) examines the impact of mobile health apps in phenotype discovery, (4) provides real-world evidence for care pathways, and finally (5) discusses mobile health tools enabling the digital transformation of health and care, empowering citizens, and building a healthier society.

    Significant evidence from epidemiological investigations showed that dietary polyphenols might manage and prevent type 2 diabetes (T2D). This review summarizes human studies and clinical trials of polyphenols as anti-diabetic agents. Polyphenols from coffee, guava tea, whortleberry, olive oil, propolis, chocolate, red wine, grape seed, and cocoa have been reported to show anti-diabetic effects in T2D patients through increasing glucose metabolism, improving vascular function as well as reducing insulin resistance and HbA1c level. However, individual flavonoid or isoflavonoid compounds appear to have no therapeutic effect on diabetes, based on the limited clinical data. Preliminary clinical trials provided evidence that resveratrol had anti-diabetic activity in humans by improving glycemic control in subjects with insulin resistance. Besides, anthocyanins exhibited anti-diabetic properties by reducing blood glucose and HbA1c levels or the improvement of insulin secretion and resistance. The structure-activity relationship of polyphenols as anti-diabetic agents in humans has been rarely reported.

    International audience ; In the Amazon, migratory catfishes of the genus Brachyplatystoma are apex predators that are important for fisheries and conservation. The life cycle of Brachyplatystoma platynemum Boulenger, 1898 is poorly known, although it has been hypothesized to be very similar to that of Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii Castelnau, 1855, which uses the entire length of the Amazon basin to complete its life cycle (from the Andes to the estuary). This study provides the first data on the migratory patterns of B. platynemum at the individual level using otolith microchemistry. In total, 94 individuals were sampled close to major breeding areas in the Amazon basin (78 fish from the middle and upper Madeira River and 14 fish from the upper Amazon), and their lifetime movements were assessed by measuring variations in 87 Sr/ 86 Sr along transverse sections of their otoliths (ear stones), using laser ablation multi-collector mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS). The migrations of B. platynemum are not as extensive as those of B. rousseauxii, and do not involve natal homing. Furthermore, the estuary is not a nursery area, at least for fish hatched in the Madeira. Nevertheless, B. platynemum migrates several thousand kilometres within the Amazon basin, with transboundary displacements between at least Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru. Current and planned hydroelectric development in the Amazon basin will severely disrupt both migration and access to breeding grounds, ultimately affecting the recruitment and population dynamics of these apex predators. The conservation of B. platynemum is crucial for the stability of the Amazonian aquatic food webs. This requires building effective fish passage on the two existing Madeira dams and considering alternative options to the large-scale hydropower development in the Amazon basin
