    Most artists earn very little. Nevertheless, there is no shortage of aspiring young artists. Do they give to the arts willingly or unknowingly? Governments and other institutions also give to the arts, to raise the low incomes. But their support is ineffective: subsidies only increase the artists' poverty. The economy of the arts is exceptional. Although the arts operate successfully in the marketplace, their natural affinity is with gift-giving, rather than with commercial exchange. People believe that artists are selflessly dedicated to art, that price does not reflect quality, and that the arts are free. But is it true? This unconventional multidisciplinary analysis explains the exceptional economy of the arts. Insightful illustrations from the practice of a visual artist support the analysis. Kunstenaars verdienen vaak weinig. Toch is er aan jonge kunstenaars geen gebrek! Nemen zij het beperkte financiële gewin voor lief of weten zij niet beter? De overheid levert een bijdrage om de lage inkomens te compenseren, maar door subsidies lijkt de armoede onder kunstenaars slechts toe te nemen. In deze onconventionele en multidisciplinaire studie analyseert fotograaf, schilder en econoom Hans Abbing de uitzonderlijke economie van de kunsten: wijden kunstenaars zich geheel belangenloos aan hun werk, of laten zij zich wel degelijk leiden door economische motieven.

    Springen, Fallen, Spritzen und Explodieren sind Flüchtigkeitsphänomene, die in jüngerer Geschichte durch mediale Inszenierungen Sensationswert erhalten haben und unser kulturelles Bildbewusstsein prägen. Auf der Grundlage einer kulturwissenschaftlich orientierten Bildwissenschaft rekonstruiert der Autor Ursprung und Wandel von Plötzlichkeitsmotiven, um die daraus entstehenden Semantiken und Faszinationseffekte zu ermitteln. Ausgehend von Beispielen aus der wissenschaftlichen, populärkulturellen, journalistischen und Mode-Ikonografie werden Produktionen des visuell Außergewöhnlichen verfolgt sowie überraschende Verbindungen zwischen unterschiedlichen Visualitätskulturen aufgezeigt. Ein reiches Bildmaterial belegt eindrucksvoll, wie Aufzeichnungsmedien an der Herstellung von modernen Ereigniserfahrungen teilhaben.

In 1969 ontving hij de Nobelprijs voor de literatuur. Meer dan honderd jaar na zijn geboorte en bijna dertig jaar na die Nobelprijs wordt zijn werk echter naar verhouding weinig meer gelezen of uitgevoerd. Dat lijkt in tegenspraak met de vele schrijvers, kunstenaars en filmers die zeggen geïnspireerd te zijn door Becketts werk. Zijn radicale modernisering van de literatuur en het toneel leek lang 'tijdloos' te zijn; is zijn werk nu toch gedateerd, of laat het nog altijd zijn sporen na?     In many senses, viewers have cut their teeth on the violence in American cinema: from Anthony Perkins slashing Janet Leigh in the most infamous of shower scenes; to the 1970s masterpieces of Martin Scorsese, Sam Peckinpah and Francis Ford Coppola; to our present-day undertakings in imagining global annihilations through terrorism, war, and alien grudges. Transfigurations brings our cultural obsession with film violence into a renewed dialogue with contemporary theory. Grønstad argues that the use of violence in Hollywood films should be understood semiotically rather than viewed realistically; Tranfigurations thus alters both our methodology of reading violence in films and the meanings we assign to them, depicting violence not as a self-contained incident, but as a convoluted network of our own cultural ideologies and beliefs. Bij veel mensen en vooral filmliefhebbers is het geweld in Amerikaanse cinema er met de paplepel ingegoten: van Anthony Perkins die Janet Leigh aan stukken rijt in een van de meest beruchte douchescenes, via de meesterwerken uit de jaren zeventig van Martin Scorsese, Sam Peckinpah en Francis Ford Coppola, tot de hedendaagse verbeeldingen van de algehele vernietiging van de wereld door terrorisme, oorlog of wraakzuchtige aliens. Transfigurations geeft een geheel nieuwe kijk op de manier waarop wij omgaan met fictieve vormen van geweld. Asbjørn Grønstad stelt in zijn studie orthodoxe opvattingen en hedendaagse paradigma's over onderzoek naar filmgeweld op de proef. Het verandert onze kijk op de methodiek waarmee we geweld in films analyseren en de betekenis ervan; niet als een opzichzelfstaand iets, maar als een gevolg van onze eigen ideeën over culturele ideologieën en overtuigingen.

    The papers in this volume show the presence of Gottfried Keller, the literary father figure of Swiss literature, in the texts of the Swiss authors from 1960ies, such as Otto F. Walter, Hugo Loetscher, Adolf Muschg, and Urs Widmer. Although these authors work in the democratic tradition of Switzerland and have an almost identificatory relationship to Keller, their role in the changed political life of the 20th century is completely different from that of their great literary model. The volume also contains studies on other Swiss literary classics, such as Robert Walser and Meinrad Inglin, as well as later authors, such as Max Frisch and Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Erica Pedretti, Thomas Hürlimann, Silvio Blatter, Peter Stamm, and Gertrud Leutenegger. In den in diesem Band zusammengetragenen Beiträgen wird die Präsenz des literarischen Übervaters der Schweizer Literatur, Gottfried Kellers, bei Autoren der 1960er Jahre wie Otto F. Walter, Hugo Loetscher, Adolf Muschg und Urs Widmer gezeigt. Diese engagierten Autoren, die sich zwar in die demokratische Tradition der Schweiz stellen und zu Keller in ein fast identifikatorisches Verhältnis treten, spielen anlässlich der veränderten politischen Öffentlichkeit im 20. Jahrhundert jedoch eine entschieden andere Rolle als ihr großes literarisches Vorbild. Aus der Sicht der Tradition und der Moderne werden im Hinblick auf die Schriftform und das Autobiographische sowie auf die Dorfwirklichkeit und die Karnevalisierung der Literatur die poetischen Auffassungen von zwei anderen Klassikern der Schweizer Literatur, von Robert Walser und Meinrad Inglin, in den Mittelpunkt der Betrachtungen und Diskussionen gerückt. Mit ihren Versuchen, die prekäre Nachkriegssituation in tragikomischen Dramen zu verarbeiten, kommen die beiden großen Beobachter der Auswirkungen des Faschismus, Frisch und Dürrenmatt zur Sprache. Vorgestellt wird Dürrenmatts politisches Engagement an seiner Auseinandersetzung mit dem „Vater der Wasserstoffbombe“, Edward Teller, die bei einer Fernsehdiskussion stattgefunden hatte. Der Einbruch der Moderne in die Familie wird an Autoren wie Erica Pedretti, Thomas Hürlimann und Silvio Blatter vorgeführt. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt jüngeren Autoren und Autorinnen wie Peter Stamm oder der zu Unrecht weniger bekannten Gertrud Leutenegger.

Combining the analytical approaches of the leading music and dramatic theorists of the twentieth century--Austrian music theorist Heinrich Schenker (1868-1935) and Russian director Constantin Stanislavsky (1863-1938)--Edward D. Latham reveals insights into works by Scott Joplin, George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, and Aaron Copland that are relevant to analysts, opera directors, and performers alike. This book about the writings of the painter-poet Samuel van Hoogstraten, one of Rembrandt's pupils, examines a wide variety of themes from painting practice and theory from the Dutch Golden Age. It addresses the contested issue of 'Dutch realism' and its hidden symbolism, as well as Rembrandt's concern with representing emotions in order to involve the spectator. Diverse aspects of imitation and illusion come to the fore, such as the theory behind sketchy or 'rough' brushwork and the active role played by the viewer's imagination. Taking as its starting point discussions in Rembrandt's studio, this unique study provides an ambitious overview of Dutch artists' ideas on painting.     Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus has been controversial from its beginning in the life of the French Visitationist nun Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690), who established the devotion after a series of mystical visions of Christ. Under the leadership of Sister Sophie Barat, founder of the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1800, the devotion was taken around the world in the course of the nineteenth century. Wherever it went, the devotion took the shape of an evolving visual culture. Even during Alacoque's lifetime, imagery was a fundamental part of practicing the devotion. The Sacred Heart of Jesus traces the unfolding visual biography of the Sacred Heart, showing how imagery and visual practice document the history of the devotion and the remarkable range of its evolution. Devotie aan het Heilige Hart van Jezus is al vanaf het eerste ontstaan controversieel. De Franse non Marguerite-Marie Alacoque (1647-1690) begon met deze Heilige-Hart-verering na een opeenvolging van openbaringen van Christus te hebben gehad. What happens if, amid the voluminous influx of otherness facilitated by globalization, we continue the tradition of valorizing literature for bringing the lives of others to us, admitting them into our world and valuing the difference that they introduce into our lives? In this new historical situation, are we not forced to determine how much otherness is acceptable, as opposed to how much is excessive, disruptive, and disturbing? The influential literary critic David Palumbo-Liu suggests that we can arrive at a sense of responsibility toward others by reconsidering the discourses of sameness that deliver those unlike ourselves to us. Through virtuoso readings of novels by J. M. Coetzee, Nadine Gordimer, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Ruth Ozeki, he shows how notions that would seem to offer some basis for commensurability between ourselves and others.

The second part deals with the textual analysis of poems about ‘mothering’ by women from India, the Caribbean and Africa. Literary criticism has dealt with the representation of ‘mothering’ in prose texts. The exploration of lyrical texts has not yet come. Since the late 1970s, the acknowledgement of and the commitment to difference has been foundational for feminist theory and activism. This investigation promotes a differentiated, ‘locational’ feminism (Friedman). The comprehensive theoretical discussion of feminism’s different concepts of ‘gender’, ‘race’, ‘ethnicity’ and ‘mothering’ builds the foundation for the main part: the presentation and analysis of the poems. The issue of ‘mothering’ foregrounds the communicative aspect of women’s experience and wants to bridge the gap between theory and practice. This study, however, does not intend to specify ‘mothering’ as a universal and unique feminine characteristic. It underlines a metaphorical use and discusses the concepts of ‘nurturing’, ‘maternal practice’ and ‘social parenthood’. Regarding the extensive material, this study understands itself as an explorative not concluding investigation placed at the intersections of gender studies, postcolonial and classical literary studies. Most of all, it aims at initiating a dialogue and interchange between scholars and students in the Western and the ‘Third World’.

    This book, the result of research carried out for the PhD in landscape design at the Florence University Faculty of Architecture, elaborates a methodological process for landscape planning in the smaller islands, comparing a number of case studies identified in the western Mediterranean, and illustrating many individual cases that broaden the overview of the specific demands of the islands. The research evolves at both scientific and humanistic levels, setting up a virtual parallel between the methods of construction of the cinema narration (which has frequently focused on the island in its various meanings) and the construction process of tools for territorial and landscape planning. The objective is to define a method that can monitor the sustainable development of the smaller islands, guiding it towards an enhanced awareness of their resources and potential, mindful of the threat of definitive loss in the case of mistaken decisions. Il testo – frutto di una ricerca svolta all'interno del Dottorato di ricerca in progettazione paesistica della Facoltà di Architettura di Firenze – elabora un'ipotesi di processo metodologico per la pianificazione del paesaggio nelle isole minori, mettendo a confronto alcuni casi studio individuati nel Mediterraneo occidentale, e riportando frequenti casi singoli che ampliano il panorama sulle specificità delle isole. La ricerca si muove su un piano sia scientifico che umanistico, creando un parallelo virtuale fra i metodi di costruzione del racconto cinematografico (che spesso ha avuto come protagonista l'isola nelle sue più diverse accezioni) e il processo di costruzione di un atto di pianificazione paesaggistico-territoriale, allo scopo di definire un metodo che possa controllare e indirizzare lo sviluppo sostenibile delle isole minori verso una maggiore presa di coscienza delle risorse, e della loro potenziale e definitiva perdita per scelte sbagliate.

Seither ist das Interesse an der »Enigma« bei Laien und Fachwelt ungebrochen. »Mythos Enigma« geht dieser Faszination in einer Feldstudie nach und nimmt die Spuren der Maschine nicht nur in Deutschland, England und in den USA, sondern auch in der Schweiz auf: Dass die geheimnisvolle Maschine aus Deutschland auch in diesem neutralen Land benutzt wurde, war bisher kaum bekannt. Die Motive von Wissenschaftlern, Sammlern und Zeitzeugen mögen unterschiedlich sein, ihre Bemühungen kommen aber auf eine geheimnisvolle Art am Schluss wieder zusammen.
