    This article analyses the parallels between, on the one hand, the portrayal of the 'struggling modern subject' depicted by Goethe in his "Die Leiden des jungen Werthers" and, on the other, the psychosocial profile of the 'sentimental man' from the 18th century, product of the cultural environment of the Empfindsamkeit. I argue that in this novel, in borrowing the Empfindsamkeit's most traditional literary genre — the epistolary novel —, Goethe ends up mimicking a number of topoi and discursive techniques proper to this tradition, though in a radically heterodox fashion. The approach will lead us to a deduction of Goethe's own views on the modern subject, which situates him as an important figure within the discourse of modernity. O artigo analisa os paralelos entre o retrato do 'sujeito moderno em crise' visto no romance "Die Leiden des jungen Werthers" de Goethe e, por outro lado, o perfil psicossocial do 'homem do sentimento' do século XVIII, fruto da cultura da Empfindsamkeit. Defendo a perspectiva de que, no romance, Goethe não apenas se utiliza do formato literário mais tradicional da Empfindsamkeit (o do romance epistolar), como também se apropria de topói e técnicas discursivas que lhe são próprias em registro radicalmente heterodoxo. A argumentação nos ligará a uma dedução da visão do conceito de subjetividade moderna com que Goethe trabalha em sua fase final do Sturm und Drang, e que o situa como importante nome do discurso filosófico da modernidade.

    In this article we present an analysis of the main characters in the film "Bagdad Café" focusing on dialogical processes and cultural conflicts which influence the identity formation and decentering of these characters. The main objective of this paper is to analyze the identity shift in these film characters relying on the works by Bakhtin and Bhabha in cultural theory. The aim is therefore to identify and describe conflicts in this cultural space that is characterised by change and fluidity. Neste artigo, apresentamos uma análise dos processos de diálogo e conflito cultural que influenciam a formação e o deslocamento de identidade das personagens no filme "Bagdá Café". O objetivo principal deste trabalho é analisar o movimento identitário das personagens à luz das teorias culturais de Bakthin e Bhabha. Para tanto, buscamos identificar e descrever os conflitos de cunho cultural neste espaço, caracterizado pela mudança e fluidez.

    In this article, we compare two translations of the novel "Verstörung" (first published in German in 1967) by the Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard: the Portuguese translation (1986, by Leopoldina Almeida) and the Brazilian translation (1999, by Hans Peter Welper and José Laurenio de Melo). The article is based on the premise that "Verstörung" is a book with a strong performative dimension; the disturbance which names the book is not only represented in the plot and the characterization of the characters, but also - and especially – in the style, in the language of the German text. We discuss and compare different solutions of translations in the Portuguese versions, as well as the paratexts contained in the two publications. We found two different postures in dealing with the specifics of the language in this novel, both with consequences for their performative effect. ... Neste artigo, comparamos duas traduções em língua portuguesa do romance "Verstörung" (primeira edição em língua alemã em 1967) do escritor austríaco Thomas Bernhard: a tradução portuguesa (1986, por Leopoldina Almeida) e a brasileira (1999, por Hans Peter Welper e José Laurenio de Melo). Partimos da premissa de que "Verstörung" é um livro com uma dimensão performativa acentuada, ou seja, a perturbação que dá nome ao livro não está representada apenas no enredo e na caracterização dos personagens, mas também – ou sobretudo – no estilo, na linguagem do texto em alemão. Discutimos e comparamos diferentes soluções tradutórias nas referidas versões em português, assim como os paratextos que constam nas duas publicações. Constatamos duas posturas divergentes ao lidar com as especificidades da linguagem da obra, ambas com consequências para o seu efeito performativo. ...

    Wie wenige hat Harald Weinrich innerhalb seines Arbeitsgebietes Impulse gesetzt, wobei sein Fach selbst mit "Sprachwissenschaft" nur unzureichend benannt ist. Er kennt die Literatur so gut wie wenige andere und versteht es, Sprache und Literatur in Zusammenhänge zu bringen, die immer sehenswert und lesenswert sind. Weinrichs Lebensaufgabe ist gar nicht auf die Philologie begrenzt, sondern berücksichtigte immer schon die Bildungs- und Kulturpolitik zunächst in Deutschland, später mit seinem Wechsel nach Frankreich die in Europa. [...] Dem hier dokumentierten Interview ging ein längeres Gespräch in Münster voraus; die Fragen wurden später schriftlich gestellt und beantwortet.     This paper is based on considerations by Gianni Vattimo and Jürgen Habermas on Nietzsche's institution of postmodernity as a "farewell" to Western Modernity and to the kind of rationality associated with it. Here we analyze how a "self-referential critique of reason" (Habermas) is actually engendered by Nietzschean aesthetic thought. We thus reconsider the terms in which the postmodern "farewell" itself should be conceived. Partindo das considerações de Gianni Vattimo e de Jürgen Habermas sobre a instauração nietzschiana da pós-modernidade como uma "despedida" à modernidade ocidental e ao tipo de racionalidade a ela associada, este texto analisa o modo pelo qual uma "crítica autorreferencial da razão" (Habermas) é efetivamente engendrada pelo pensamento estético nietzschiano, de modo a reconsiderar os termos pelos quais a própria "despedida" pós-moderna deve ser concebida.

    The current paper discusses Herta Müller's poetry essays in the context of contemporary autobiographical German writing. The question of referentiality of her essays will receive special attention; in these writings several aesthetic characteristics of autobiographical composition will also be shown. Furthermore, it will be demonstrated to what extent the effect of her essayistic writing is not only aesthetic, but also and mainly political. No presente artigo discute-se o ensaísmo poetológico de Herta Müller no contexto da escrita autobiográfica alemã contemporânea. A questão da referencialidade de seus ensaios receberá especial atenção; nesses textos também serão apontadas as diversas características estéticas da composição autobiográfica. No mais, demonstra-se em que medida o efeito de sua escrita ensaística não é somente estético mas também e, principalmente, político.

    Dieser Artikel beschäftigt sich mit der Avantgarde als Kunstform, die sich aus der Auseinandersetzung mit technischem Fortschritt, Stadterfahrung und neuen Wahrnehmungsmustern formiert und die Multiperspektivität und Simultanität des urbanen Lebens als ein zentrales Prinzip für ihre Werke nutzt. Untersucht werden sowohl die europäischen Avantgardisten wie auch ihr Einfluss auf Literatur und Malerei Brasiliens in den 20er Jahren. Ein weiterer Teil widmet sich der konkreten Poesie als literarisches Pendant zu architektonischen Konzepten von Städten wie São Paulo und Brasília. This article conceives the avant-garde as a form of art that emerges out of the experience with technical progress, city life and new patterns of perception and that succeeded in transforming multiple perspective and simultaneity of urban life into a central principle for their production. Analyzed are the European avant-gardes as well as their influences on Brazilian literature and painting in the 20s. Furthermore we take a look at concrete poetry of the 50's as a literary pendant to architectonic concepts of cities like São Paulo and Brasília.

    Ausgehend vom Stadt-Land-Gegensatz, der schon in Vergils Georgica beobachtbar ist und dann in der englischen und französischen Lyrik des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts eine wichtige Rolle spielt, richtet sich der Blick zunächst auf die deutsche Tradition der 'Großstadtlyrik' . Hier läßt sich seit etwa 1900 von einem zunächst teils dämonisierenden, teils von Motiven des Erhabenen geprägten Umgang mit dem Phänomen Metropole sprechen, während französische, englische oder amerikanische Autoren (Wordsworth, Whitman, Baudelaire) bereits einen weniger ideologischen Umgang mit der neuen Urbanität pflegen. Erst in der Nachkriegszeit, vorbereitet durch expressionistische Autoren wie Ernst Stadler oder später Benn, wird auch in der deutschsprachigen Poetologie der plurale, hybride Charakter der Großstadt entdeckt. Den Abschluß bilden Beispiele aus der nordamerikanischen und der brasilianischen Lyrik. The opposition city-country which appears already in Vergils Georgics and becomes very relevant in the British and French poetry of the 18th and 19th centuries, will be treated at first with regard to the German tradition of 'city-poetry'. Since about 1900 the phenomenon of the big city (metropolis) combines with demoniac and sublime motives, while French, English or American authors (Baudelaire, Wordsworth, Whitman) saw the city from a less ideological perspective. Only in the postwar-decade – after some anticipations by authors of Expressionism like Ernst Stadler or Gottfried Benn – the pluralistic, hybrid character of the city will be discovered also in German poetology. Some examples of Modern North American and Brazilian poetry will be analyzed in the last chapter of the article.

    Die Bedeutung und der Einfluss des Werkes von Franz Rosenzweig, jüdisch-deutscher Philosoph vom Beginn des vergangenen Jahrhunderts, werden noch immer nicht angemessen gewürdigt. Rosenzweig entwickelt in seinem Hauptwerk, der "Stern der Erlösung", ausgehend von eminent theologischen Kategorien, sein philosophisches System. Dem "Monolog des Ich" der traditionellen Philosophie setzt Rosenzweig ein "Neues Denken" von existenzialistischem Gepräge entgegen, das die Mündlichkeit und den Dialog mit dem "Anderen" aufwertet und den Verstand als Werkzeug der Reflexion ersetzt. Dieses Denken weist Korrespondenzen zur Philosophie W. Benjamins auf. Das "Neue Denken" übte einen starken Einfluss auf E. Levinas aus, sowie auf zahlreiche interessante philosophische und theologische Ansätze nach dem "Iinguistic turn" und auf die postmoderne jüdische Geistigkeit. Rosenzweigs Philosophie hat andererseits in seiner Übersetzertätigkeit eine wichtige direkte Anwendung gefunden. Übersetzen erscheint Rosenzweig als Verpflichtung, die aus einer Ethik, verstanden als grundlegender Philosophie, erwächst. Der vorliegende Artikel analysiert einige Aspekte der Schriften Rosenzweigs, in denen sich eine "Philosophie der Übersetzung" abzeichnet. The relevance of the work and the influence of Franz Rosenzweig, a German Jewish philosopher of the beginning of the last century; are still to get the appreciation they deserve. Rosenzweig was the author of one of the greatest – and less read – books of the 20th century, "The Star of Redemption", where he develops his philosophical system mainly on basis of theological categories. To the "monologue of the I" of mainstream philosophy, Rosenzweig opposes a "new thinking", of existential character, which values orality and the "other", and where language substitutes reason as a tool for thought. In it one can find some correspondences with the thought of Walter Benjamin. This "new thinking", also, strongly influenced Emmanuel Levinas and nowadays bears its fruits within "linguistic turn" philosophy and theology, and post-modern Jewish thought. This philosophy found in Rosenzweig's work in translation one of its main practical applications. To translate was for Rosenzweig a necessity, emanating from an ethics constituted as "first philosophy". This article examines some aspects of Rosenzweig's writings from where his "philosophy of translation" is made explicit.
