Len's on his deathbed and the family have gathered to say their final farewells. His sisters still aren't speaking after nearly twenty years; his nephew's trying for a baby and a bigger house; while his best mate, Ken, remembers 'Bas-vegas' when it was a village. As the spread is laid out and the ham sandwiches sit next to the wreaths, it's hard to see who's hungry and who's just greedy. 'In Basildon' is full of explosive family dynamics and knotty relationships, embracing history, emotion and a strong sense of homeland. This depiction of indigenous Essex dwellers is uncompromising and at times harsh, but Eldridge also elicits deep sympathy for his characters as they face death, grief and crumbling familial bonds. It premiered at London's Royal Court Theatre in February 2012.

In the oppressive heat of Midsummer's Eve, Julie, daughter of the lord, is drawn into a dangerous tryst with her father's butler. As the night wears on, the couple, from opposite ends of the social spectrum, dance, flirt and fight towards an explosive conclusion that will shake the existing order to its core. Zinnie Harris's new version of Strindberg's 19th-century masterpiece, 'Miss Julie', relocates the play to central Scotland between the wars.

Schiller's masterpiece hinges on a brilliantly imagined meeting between Mary, Queen of Scots - focus of simmering Catholic dissent and her cousin Elizabeth, Queen of England, who has imprisoned her. Isolated by their duplicitous male courtiers, the women collide headlong, each wrestling with the rank, ambition and destiny their births have bestowed, against a thrilling background of intrigue, plot and counter-plot. David Harrower's version of Mary Stuart premiered at the Citizen's Theatre, Glasgow, in October 2006.

Written in a fortnight and often regarded as Strindberg's masterpiece, the play's première at Strindberg's experimental theatre in Denmark in 1889 was banned by the censor and its first public production three years later in Berlin aroused such protests that it was withdrawn after one performance. This translation by Michael Meyer was first performed in 1965 by the National Theatre at the Chichester Festival.

It is Midsummer in Sweden and Miss Julie, the Count's daughter, appears in the kitchen, confronting her father's valet Jean. The restless and electric exchanges between them are a snarl of seduction and contempt, their unseen sexual transgression undoing the restrictions of servility and hierarchy. Strindberg writes with disdain of a woman deformed by her belief that she is equal to man, but Miss Julie emerges as a compellingly mercurial character, tense and hysterical and tragic.

'Mudlarks' is a tragic, beautifully realised play about three young men trapped at the wrong end of the river. On the muddy banks of the Thames, downstream from the bright lights of London, three boys hide from the police after a night of recklessness. As morning dawns, their options diminish and just two questions remain: do they have the power to determine their own fates, or are they destined to sink into the mud? Donoghue's debut play exposes the culture she grew up with. With brutal honesty it explores teenagers' impulse to dream, and its futility in a reality that has no space for dreamers. It was first presented at the High Tide Festival in Suffolk in May 2012.

Shut in a care home away from a world where pensioners steal in order to feed themselves and dreaming of a youth spent in the dingy corner of a seedy club, two lifelong friends are forced to say their goodbyes. When memory is fading and the past is clouded with a lifetime of drink and drugs, what is true and how to live are called into question. Laura Poliakoff's debut play, first presented at the sixth HighTide Festival in Suffolk in 2012, is a powerful call-to-arms for a generation of twenty-year-olds not considering their own old age. How we care for our elderly, where we put them and the sacrifices that are made fuel this often comic yet touching play.

Shinn's uneasy play, premiered at the Royal Court in 2006, asks what happens when people and events apparently thousands of miles away affect the heart and soul of a city. Sparse, cruel and transfixing, 'Dying City' is a crisp dissection of the impact on society of the war in Iraq. Craig is a Harvard graduate student, who gives up his dissertation on Faulkner for military service. The play sways between the past, on Craig's last night at home with his wife Kelly before he goes to fight in Iraq, and the present, when the widowed Kelly receives a visit from his twin brother Peter. Kelly is a therapist and Peter, an actor who has just walked out on the second half of his play, wants to talk about their mutual loss. Dying City slowly exposes the tensions strung between these relationships, pierced and overshadowed by the enormities of the war in Iraq and 9/11.

'Fog' is about two families: one white and dysfunctional, the other black and aspiring. Confronting important social themes with a clear-eyed lack of sentimentality, 'Fog' looks at the care system and the effects on the children placed there. It explores the difficulties we face in trying to reconnect with people who have been absent throughout childhood, and the inadequacy of communication: words are used as loose sticking plasters to try and patch up and hide the exposed wounds of fractured relationships.

'The Beaux' Stratagem' has been praised for the range, depth and naturalism of its characters: at a time when most comedies were written in, for and about London, Farquhar leaves behind the tendency to portray country folk as uncouth and laughable rustics. In addition, the play has been seen as broaching the gap between the sharp wit of Restoration comedy and its plots full of rakes and rascals, and the more genteel, sentimental comedy of the eighteenth century, whose focus falls not on sexual one-upmanship but on the realities of marital discord.

Christopher stands beside Mrs Shears's dead dog. It has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington. Though he has never previously ventured alone beyond the end of his street, Christopher's detective work ends up taking him on a frightening journey that tears apart his once-familiar world. Simon Stephens's adaptation, first produced at London's National Theatre in 2012, of Mark Haddon's award-winning novel offers a richly theatrical exploration of this touching and bleakly humorous story.

Two young volunteers, Tristan and Connie, agree to take part in a clinical drug trial. Succumbing to the gravitational pull of attraction and love, however, Tristan and Connie manage to throw the trial off-course, much to the frustration of the clinicians involved. This funny, moving and perhaps surprisingly human play explores questions of sanity, neurology and the limits of medicine, alongside ideas of fate, loyalty and the inevitability of physical attraction. It premiered at the National Theatre's Cottesloe Theatre in November 2012.
