    Among the channels of human expression, perhaps the richest of all is music, through which people can express their emotions – in a continuum ranging from joy to grief, from excitement to depression – in a manner that is socially and culturally accessible and acceptable. This book addresses the aspects involved in both producing and listening to music from the point of view of cognitive science. Arguments that might appear hard for non-specialists to understand are addressed in a clear and accessible language. An enthralling itinerary through the various aspects of the human relationship with music that underscores how the long path from the first sounds that man has produced and identified in nature through to the most modern compositions are the result of a process of rationalisation gravitating around the multiform relationship between man, the environment and musical creation. Fra i canali d'espressione dell'uomo il più ricco è forse la musica, che permette di esprimere le proprie emozioni – in un continuum che va dalla gioia al dolore, dalla esaltazione alla depressione – in modi socialmente e culturalmente accessibili e accettabili. Il volume affronta, dal punto di vista della scienza cognitiva, gli aspetti coinvolti sia nel produrre che ascoltare musica. Questi argomenti, che possono sembrare di non facile comprensione ai non specialisti, sono affrontati con un linguaggio chiaro e accessibile. Viene così costruito un appassionante percorso su alcuni aspetti del rapporto dell'uomo con la musica, che evidenzia come il lungo cammino dai primi suoni che l'uomo ha prodotto e individuato nella natura sino alle composizioni più moderne sia il risultato di un processo di razionalizzazione che ha visto al centro il multiforme rapporto fra uomo, ambiente e creazione musicale.

    This book presents the results of a study on the fragmentation of the suburban territory in the Florentine plain, developed in the framework of the Florence University PhD course in Landscape Design. Thus the landscape on the western edge of the urban centre becomes a case study for evolving from the applications to the quest for theoretical and methodological elements. What emerges clearly from this is the importance of the design mentality as an essential cultural value for the drafting of policies of active conservation, retrieval and modification of the landscape. Il volume presenta gli esiti di uno studio riguardante la frammentazione paesistica dei territori periubani di pianura nell'area fiorentina, elaborato nell'ambito delle attività del Dottorato di ricerca in Progettazione paesistica dell'Università di Firenze. Il paesaggio di margine ad ovest del nucleo urbano diviene così un caso di studio per passare dalle applicazioni alla ricerca di elementi teorico-metodologici. In tal senso emerge chiaramente l'importanza del pensiero progettuale come valore culturale essenziale per l'impostazione di politiche di conservazione attiva, recupero e modificazione del paesaggio.

    The birth of rhetoric istraced back to the 5th century B.C.E., when the first theoretical treatises on rhetoric were drafted. As early as in the speeches of the Iliad however, one canrecognize a deliberate and thoughtful use of refined rhetorical techniques, although these techniques were only codified at a much later date. The Homeric orators thus appear to have been influenced by unwritten but nevertheless valid rules of rhetoric. Based on detailed analysis of the most important speeches in the epic and related reflections by the poet, the author reveals Homer as a pioneer of rhetoric.     Der vorliegende Band vereinigt die Beiträge der internationalen Tagung Eschilo, il creatore della tragedia (Trient, 26.-28. Mai 2011), deren Teinehmer sich gegenwärtig mit einer Neuausgabe der Tragödien, Fragmente und Scholien des Aischylos (unter der Schirmherrschaft der Accademia dei Lincei) befassen. Für eine Neuausgabe sprechen mehrere Gründe, insbesondere der Umstand, dass wesentliche Hand-schriften noch nicht berücksichtigt wurden und dass die bewährten Ausgaben von Page und West oft von der handschriftlichen Überlieferung abweichen, die bisweilen zu Unrecht verworfen wurde. Während Page und West davonüberzeugt sind, dass der überlieferte Text zuviele Anomalien aufweise (Lexik, Syntax), sind nicht wenige Lesarten im Rahmen der Aischyleischen Lexis zu rechtfertigen.

    "In The Sword and the Pen: Women, Politics, and Poetry in Sixteenth-Century Siena, Konrad Eisenbichler analyzes the work of Sienese women poets, in particular, Aurelia Petrucci, Laudomia Forteguerri, and Virginia Salvi, during the first half of the sixteenth century up to the fall of Siena in 1555. Eisenbichler sets forth a complex and original interpretation of the experiences of these three educated noblewomen and their contributions to contemporary culture in Siena by looking at the emergence of a new lyric tradition and the sonnets they exchanged among themselves and with their male contemporaries. Through the analysis of their poems and various book dedications to them, Eisenbichler reveals the intersection of poetry, politics, and sexuality, as well as the gendered dialogue that characterized Siena's literary environment during the late Renaissance. Eisenbichler also examines other little-known women poets and their relationship to the cultural environment of Siena, underlining the exceptional role of the city of Siena as the most important center of women's writing in the first half of the sixteenth century in Italy, and probably in all of Europe. This innovative contribution to the field of late Renaissance and early modern Italian and women's studies rescues from near oblivion a group of literate women who were celebrated by contemporary scholars but who have been largely ignored today, both because of a dearth of biographical information about them and because of a narrow evaluation of their poetry. Since 1971, the International Congress for Neo-Latin Studies has been organised every three years in various cities in Europe and North America. In August 2009, Uppsala in Sweden was the venue of the fourteenth Neo-Latin conference, held by the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies. The proceedings of the Uppsala conference have been collected in this volume under the motto “Litteras et artes nobis traditas excolere – Reception and Innovation”. Ninety-nine individual and five plenary papers spanning the period from the Renaissance to the present offer a variety of themes covering a range of genres such as history, literature, philology, art history, and religion. The contributions will be of relevance not only for scholarly readers, but also for an interested non-professional audience
