    This book addresses the application of computing to cultural heritage and the discipline of Digital Humanities that formed around it. Digital Humanities research is transforming how the Human record can be transmitted, shaped, understood, questioned and imagined and it has been ongoing for more than 70 years. However, we have no comprehensive histories of its research trajectory or its disciplinary development. The authors make a first contribution towards remedying this by uncovering, documenting, and analysing a number of the social, intellectual and creative processes that helped to shape this research from the 1950s until the present day. By taking an oral history approach, this book explores questions like, among others, researchers’ earliest memories of encountering computers and the factors that subsequently prompted them to use the computer in Humanities research. Computation and the Humanities will be an essential read for cultural and computing historians, digital humanists and those interested in developments like the digitisation of cultural heritage and artefacts.

    Can Fashion Be Queer? The combination of clothing, accessories and styles has long since become standard in fashion, along with unisex as a trend of urban fashion design. Can the concept of queerness then be applied to fashion in any way? If it is possible to use objects and styles to constantly shift and re-constitute meaning in a fashion context, do such acts then also have the potential to make codes such as gender ambiguous and to set them in motion? This volume presents systematic reflections and exemplary analyses on the relationship between queerness and fashion in a German-language context for the first time, in the process, opening up fashion, gender and queer studies to new perspectives.     Zwischen 1917 und 1920 feiert das (bürger)kriegsgeschundene Russland die Stationen der virulenten, allseits bedrohten Revolution in zahllosen Umzügen und grandiosen Freilichtschauspielen. Trotz Elend und Chaos finden Fest und Feiern statt in einem Ausmaß und einer Pracht, die alle Kräfte und ganz Petrograd mobilisieren – und die Erklärung „Propaganda“ und andere Totschlagwörter als logische Rohrkrepierer entlarven. Kernstück der Arbeit sind drei nahezu unbekannte, spektakuläre Aufführungen, deren Handlungsverlauf, Kontext und Wirkungsästhetik hier dank seltener Quellen und Abbildungen gründlich ausgeleuchtet werden. Erstmals wird die kulturelle Rückbindung des revolutionären Aufbruchs als primäre Schubkraft für den immensen Erfolg der Manöverinszenierungen fokussiert: der sozialpolitische „Perspektivwechsel“ gründet in der umgekehrten Perspektive der östlichen Ikonenmalerei, die Feiern übernehmen die Riten der orthodoxen Liturgie, und die Feste tradieren Bräuche des paganen Jahrmarkts. Deren Ästhetik befragt und erneuert den Wertecode, den jeder „Bauer in Uniform“ zuverlässig versteht. Theatralität erweist sich hier einmal mehr als sicheres, produktives Re/Medium für das, was eine Gemeinschaft oder Gesellschaft im Inneren zusammenhält.

    Der Begriff 'historisches Präsens' ist zu einem wenig differenzierten Sammelbegriff geworden, der syntaktisch und pragmatisch sehr unterschiedliche Präsenstypen umfasst. Die vorliegende Monographie Werk arbeitet die Unterscheidungen des historischen Präsens heraus: das aspektuelle, aoristische Präsens (oft 'episches Präsens') von der Antike bis ins Mittelalter, das perspektivische, vergangenheitsaktualisierende Präsens (das eigentliche 'historische Präsens'), das sich vor allem ab dem 16. Jahrhundert etabliert, und schließlich das narrative Präsens als durchgängiges Erzähltempus in Romanen des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts. Die intermedialen Einflüsse durch den Film begünstigen die Verbreitung und Etablierung des Präsens als neues, alternatives Erzähltempus im Roman. Anders als häufig angenommen, bewahrt es dabei durchaus seine Grundsemantik. Die Präsensverwendung in narrativen Texten wird am Beispiel des Portugiesischen, Spanischen, Französischen, Deutschen und Englischen besprochen mit einem Ausblick auf das Russische.
