    Abstract: This collection of essays by leading scholars of American literature and culture has emerged out of recent debates on the historical, geographical, symbolic, and cultural significance of the Atlantic, as well as new work in the area of Transatlantic Studies. In a series of fascinating essays the authors have produced diverse and innovative interventions in the field of Anglo-American literary relations. The authors discussed range from Gertrude Stein to Alfred North Whitehead, Charlotte Perkins Gilman to Sarah Grand, Henry James to George Eliot, Elizabeth Stoddard to Charlotte Bronte, Mark Twain to Walter Scott through to Djuna Barnes and Evelyn Waugh. Subjects discussed include Scottish-American literary relations, the Atlanticist dimension of Spiritualism, American interventions in the debate about Highland clearances, American slavery and British pastoralism.     The special section of CLOSURE #7 is dedicated to the exploration of ›Eco-comics‹. Our contributors ask how comics visualise, sequentialise, frame, and annotate relationships of nature and culture. How can sequential art convey our position in and against the nonhuman world? Do comics do justice to the perspective of others – microbes and trees, great apes and laboratory animals, terrestrials and extraterrestrials? Which forms enable graphic media to ›unflatten‹ (Sousanis) our view of the environment, offering multiple, skewed perspectives on the nonhuman in the process? Our authors trace the entanglement of the human and the nonhuman in real and imagined graphic natures relating to biospheres and animals, microorganisms and ecosystems, landscapes framed and unframed. However, even if no trees nor any conventionally ›natural‹ entities make an appearance whatsoever, the comics analysed in this issue still feature environmental imaginaries worth investigating.

    The heroic manifests through media. In arts and popular culture, the affiliation to a genre or the invocation of generic conventions co-determines the form of (re)presentation. The concept of genericity recognises that genre traits and conventions significantly impact these (re)presentations. For the representation and impact of the heroic (or certain aspects of it), genericity can be of fundamental importance. Some genres are more conducive to the (re)presentation of the heroic, or even require it be (re)presented in a certain way, while other genres limit the options of (re)presenting the heroic. As a result, there is a natural affinity between the heroic and particular genres or subgenres. These genres offer a specific “affordance”, i.e. conditions that enable the heroic to be manifested in a particular way.
