This volume of essays emphasizes the common theme that bodies of water may segregate, but, ironically, also unite nations and their readers through the literature that authors from various countries produce. It reveals the importance of valuing literature that, over time, has travelled down bubbling streams, across lakes, along ocean waves, and white-water rivers because fiction, drama, and poetry know neither actual nor artificial boundaries, and, therefore, they cross-fertilize, and even transform, beliefs, practices, and roles across cultures. Topics examined here range from South Africa's on-going crises that, in part, mirror those of Somalia and Mozambique to poetry that has been reinvented as a literature in movement and to philosopher Henri Bergson's influence on other philosophers, as well as Nikos Kazantzakis, author of Zorba the Greek. The scholars contributing to this collection hail from across the globe, allowing the work to add to conversations on regional and international literary study, with special emphasis on writings from such places as Japan, Luxembourg, the Caribbean, the United States, Hungary, South Africa, Greece, and Turkey. Reader Response Theory began to take hold in the 1960s. Much like the phenomenological approach to criticism that preceded it, it allows both reader and author intentionality and conscious presence, and it gives the reader particular presence in the fulfillment or completion of the text. The work of art mediates between author and reader, and the reader participates in an interpretive community that gives the work life and liveliness. This book is divided into three sections: Part I discusses the history and practice of Reader Response criticism; Part II comprises a collection of thirty-eight sonnets responding both critically and creatively to Shakespeare's works; and Part III discusses the poems of Part II as both creative and critical acts, elaborating on what they aim to show about the plays and how Shakespeare's plays continue to encourage varied analytical and personal response. As shown here, the creative and the critical need not be separate, exclusive acts; each invades the other. Intro -- Table of Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Part I: Poetry as Literary Criticism: Sonnets and Reader Response -- Part II: The Poems -- Part III: From Poems to Commentary: Analysis of the Reader Response Text -- Bibliography -- Index.
