    The ‘Nine Worthies’ (French: neuf preux) are a late mediaeval canon of individual heroes who were admired for their virtue and heroism. Initially appearing only as a literary topos, the Nine Worthies eventually also developed into a motif in art history that is found in different media such as painting, fresco, tapestry or sculpture. The selection and ordering of the figures did not follow any set tradition. In the depictions the nine heroes are elevated to ideal representations of knightly bravery whose fame and exemplariness is based on heroic deeds on the battlefield. The embodiment of knightly role models did not just have purely aesthetic or representative functions, but also pursued appellative and moralising aims.The Nine Worthies first appeared in literature at the beginning of the 14th century as a list of ideal knights, later giving rise to numerous portrayals in art. This group comprised Hector of Troy, Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar as three heroes of pagan antiquity; Judah Maccabee, King David and the prophet Joshua as the three representatives of the Old Testament; and King Arthur, Charlemagne and Godfrey of Bouillon as three figures representing Christendom. Starting in France the Nine Worthies found visual expression in Germany, Austria, Italy, England and Denmark.

    The nine heroines were a collection of figures that arose in the late Middle Ages as a counterpart to the older list of nine heroes. Like that male canon, the female figures claimed fame on the basis of their recorded deeds. Starting from France ('neuf preuses'), distinct traditions with a varying selection of women developed in England ('Nine Worthy Women' or 'Nine Ladies Worthy') and Germany ('Neun gute Heldinnen' or 'Neun beste Frauen'). Originating in literary sources, the nine heroines form an iconographic topos, which appears in all kinds of visual media. They are commonly portrayed together with the nine heroes in illuminated manuscripts, frescoes and panel paintings, as monumental sculptures, in tapestries, on playing cards and as part of festive entrées. The conceptualisation of the female canon was subject to a considerable number of changes in its reception history. As an element of the mediaeval aristocratic lifeworld, the nine heroines served representative purposes and embodied models of feminine rule and chivalry, while their later early modern conceptualisation found its way into early humanist discourses on virtuous heroism through the inclusion of ancient and biblical heroines.

    For a long time now, women have struggled for the vindication of their rights and for their visibility. This struggle may seem a story of success, maybe not complete or equal for all women, but at least one which slowly but surely carries with it the promise of equality for all women. However, a closer look reveals that in various fields of culture the representation of women frequently undergoes a manipulation which makes the image of women lose the intention initially attempted. This is often the case with adaptations of literary texts to the screen, when the initial literary message is changed because of, for example, marketing demands or some ideological stance. Rarely do we find the opposite case where the indifferent or emasculated original female characters are turned into guardians and/or apologists of feminine power. The present volume focuses precisely on the way in which the image of women is modified in films and TV series, when compared with the original literary texts.

    Aristophanes, the celebrated Greek comic poet, is famous for his plays on contemporary themes, in which he exercises fierce political satire. Ancient political comedy made ample use of comically significant proper names - much as is the case in modern satire.     Chaucer introduces the characters of the Knight and the Prioress in the General Prologue to The Canterbury Tales. Beginning with these familiar figures, Elizabeth Fowler develops a new method of analyzing literary character. She argues that words generate human figures in our reading minds by reference to paradigmatic cultural models of the person. These models-such as the pilgrim, the conqueror, the maid, the narrator-originate in a variety of cultural spheres. A concept Fowler terms the "social person" is the key to understanding both the literary details of specific characterizations and their indebtedness to history and culture.Drawing on central texts of medieval and early modern England, Fowler demonstrates that literary characters are created by assembling social persons from throughout culture. Her perspective allows her to offer strikingly original readings of works by Chaucer, Langland, Skelton, and Spenser, and to reformulate and resolve several classic interpretive problems. In so doing, she reframes accepted notions of the process and the consequences of reading.Developing insights from law, theology, economic thought, and political philosophy, Fowler's book replaces the traditional view of characters as autonomous individuals with an interpretive approach in which each character is seen as a battle of many archetypes. According to Fowler, the social person provides the template that enables authors to portray, and readers to recognize, the highly complex human figures that literature requires

    There has never been an accurate, comprehensive account of the origin, development, and significance of Balzac's use of recurring characters in the many volumes of the Comedie humaine, although the device is well recognized and such a study has long been deemed essential by Balzac scholars. One cannot read far in the Comedie without encountering characters whom one has met in other novels. Balzac did not introduce recurring characters until after he had written thirty of forty stories, but he kept revising his work from one printing or edition to the next so that earlier stories have as many of the recurring characters as the later ones. Professor Pugh traces the use of the device and unravels its complexities over the whole of Balzac's career by providing a year-by-year account of the author's struggles between 1829 and 1847 to unify his fictional world of some 3,000 characters. This study illuminates the genesis of several novels and sheds totally new light on the validity of the device, by enabling us for the first time to distinguish between examples which belong to the original creative urge, and those introduced during later revisions. The book takes into account the most recent studies of individual Balzac novels, and is unique in the range and thoroughness of its investigation. All serious students of Balzac will need to consult this reference work

    The eponymous heroes of "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde", "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and "Dracula" are known to most through the medium of film. These novels were adapted early on in the history of the medium and have been revisited by film makers countless times. This book asks why they had such a lasting resonance in film. It claims that the monsters featured in these novels, which were written at the advent of cinematography, differ from previous Gothic leads: Jekyll/Hyde, Dorian Gray and Dracula were born from a sense of unease with the photographic image at a time when it began to move. They embody fears triggered by new ways of representing – and thus thinking about – the human body. Their exhibitions of deviant corporeality and its effect on others anticipate the representation of the human body in film as well as an audience’s reception of a film. Through its numerous case studies, this monograph is able to show that film history can be told as a history of the representation of the human body. It features discussions of films as diverse as "Der Januskopf", "Nosferatu", "Vampyr", "Le Testament du Docteur Cordelier", "Altered States", "Dorian Gray im Spiegel der Boulevardpresse" and "Bram Stoker’s Dracula". ; Viele kennen "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde", "The Picture of Dorian Gray" und "Dracula" nur aus Filmen. Warum sind gerade diese drei Schauerromane, die zur Geburtsstunde der Kinematographie entstanden, immer wieder verfilmt worden? Dieser Frage spürt die vorliegende Studie nach. Als Produkte des spätviktorianischen Unbehagens über das fotographische Abbild, das im Begriff steht, zum Bewegtbild zu werden, sind ihre Titelfiguren Monster eines neuen Typus. In ihrer abnormen Körperlichkeit und ihrer Wirkung auf andere nehmen Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, Dorian Gray und Graf Dracula vorweg was mit dem Menschen im und durch den Film geschieht. Anhand der Figuren von Dorian Gray, Jekyll/Hyde und Dracula rekonstruiert die vorliegende Studie die frühe Filmtheorie als Denken über das Verhältnis des Menschen zu seinem Körper. Unter den Filmen, die als Realisationen des proto-filmischen Potentials der drei Figuren besprochen werden, sind "Der Januskopf", "Nosferatu", "Vampyr", "Le Testament du Docteur Cordelier", "Altered States", "Dorian Gray im Spiegel der Boulevardpresse" und "Bram Stoker’s Dracula".
