    Heldenerzählungen berichten von Gewalt, dem vorsätzlichen Übergriff auf den Körper eines anderen gegen dessen Willen. In der Gewalttat kulminieren Mut und Entschlossenheit, Regelverachtung und Handlungsmacht, sie erscheint als Bewährungsprobe des Individuums. Gewalt zwingt die Beteiligten, sich zur ihr zu verhalten und zu positionieren – Täter wie Opfer, Beteiligte wie Beistehende, Zeitgenossen wie Nachkommende. In diesem Band strukturieren drei Perspektivierungen –zur Heroisierung, zum Ertragen und zur Vermeidung von Gewalt – literatur-, geschichts-, kulturwissenschaftliche und soziologische Zugänge zum Beziehungsgeflecht von Heldentum und physischer Gewaltausübung. Ein einleitender Aufsatz identifiziert theoretische Schnittstellen. Mit Beiträgen von Ronald G. Asch, Cornelia Brink, Ulrich Bröckling, Olmo Gölz, Joachim Grage, Felix K. Maier, Vera Marstaller, Christoph Mauntel, Sotirios Mouzakis, Friederike Pannewick, Jan Philipp Reemtsma, Sven Reichardt und Cornel Zwierlein. Heroic tales recount violence, which can be defined as a deliberate assault on the body of another against their will. The act of violence is a culmination of courage, determination, contempt for rules and the power to act; violence appears as a paradigmatic test of the individual. Violence forces those involved to position themselves in relation to it – perpetrators as well as victims, participants as well as bystanders, contemporaries as well as descendants. In this volume, three perspectives on the heroization, endurance and avoidance of violence structure different literary, historical, cultural and sociological approaches to identifying the relationship between the heroic and physical violence. An introductory essay identifies theoretical intersections between violence and heroism. With contributions by Ronald G. Asch, Cornelia Brink, Ulrich Bröckling, Olmo Gölz, Joachim Grage, Felix K. While young people navigate political and personal forces, as well as technologies, that threaten to fragment and thingify them, saints show that agency is still possible outside of the humanist construct of subjectivity. The saints of these neomedievalist novels, through living a life vulnerable to the other, attain a distributed agency that accomplishes miracles through bodies and places and things (relics, icons, pilgrimage sites, and ultimately the hagiographic text and its reader) spread across time.     ger: Bei der Übersetzung eines Buches werden auch Titel und Buchumschlag modifiziert, wodurch sich das gesamte Produkt und die Art und Weise, wie es von seinem Publikum wahrgenommen wird, verändert. Dies ist das zentrale Thema dieser Arbeit, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf den Funktionen, die der Titel und der Buchumschlag als paratextuelle Elemente erfüllen, liegt und wie sich diese im Zuge einer Übersetzung verändern. Der Gegenstand dieser Arbeit sind die Titel und Umschlagseiten eins der englischen Übersetzungen sowie der deutschsprachigen Originalausgaben von sechs Kinder- und Jugendbüchern der österreichischen Autorin Christine Nöstlinger. Die vorgenommene Analyse basiert auf den Paratextfunktionen nach Gérard Genette sowie Christiane Nords Funktionsmodell. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, zu eruieren, welche Titel- und Umschlagfunktionen in den Übersetzungen sowie in den dazugehörigen deutschsprachigen Originalen am stärksten vertreten sind und ob sich bei der Gewichtung der unterschiedlichen Funktionen gewisse kulturspezifische Tendenzen feststellen lassen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Hierarchie der Funktionen in den untersuchten Paratexten der englischen Übersetzungen dieselbe bleibt wie in jenen der deutschsprachigen Originale, dass jedoch insgesamt eine stärkere Ausprägung der Funktionen im Englischen zu bemerken ist. Dadurch findet in den englischen Übersetzungen eine Anpassung an die Erwartungen des Zielpublikums statt, die hauptsächlich dem Zweck dient, das Buch besser zu vermarkten. eng: Book covers and titles always perform certain functions as paratextual elements of a book which influence the perception and interpretation of the potential readership. When a book is translated into another language, its title and cover are usually modified, to adapt it to the target culture. This masters thesis analysis the functions of the titles and book covers of six books by the Austrian childrens book author Christine Nöstlinger that have been successfully translated into English. The study is based on an analysis of both the titles and book covers by applying Gérard Genettes paratextual functions and Christiane Nords model of text-functions, examining primarily the referential, expressive and appellative function. It aims at outlining these functions of the titles and book covers both of the original and the translation in order to determine in which way they differ from one another. The central research question therefore examines which title and cover functions are more present in the original book covers and titles in comparison to their English translations and whether the hierarchy of the functions reveals certain cultural tendencies. The analysis shows that the hierarchy of the title and cover functions is not altered in the translations. However, all three functions are developed to a higher degree in the English version of the titles and book covers. This stronger presence of the referential, expressive and appellative function in the English titles and book cover designs shows that the English speaking target audience is generally expecting a higher degree of these functions when buying a book and that the titles and covers of the translations have a more marketing-driven tendency than their originals.

    ger: Suzanne Collins‘ Die Tribute von Panem fällt unter das Genre der dystopischen Jugendromane, was bedeutet, dass der Roman eine imaginäre und post-apokalyptische Zukunft schildert, in der ein totalitäres Regime die Bevölkerung unterdrückt. Das Machtsystem der fiktiven Regierung basiert auf den Hungerspielen, einem jährlichen politischen Unterhaltungsspektakel. Dieses Spektakel wird als Reality-TV-Sendung inszeniert, was die Grundlage für Collins‘ Medienkritik im Roman bildet. Gesellschaftskritik ist ein wesentliches Merkmal von Dystopien, weil dystopische Literatur oft die Aufmerksamkeit auf aktuelle gesellschaftliche und politische Themen lenkt und Warnungen für ihre Leser_innen enthält. In dieser Arbeit werden Theorien antikapitalistischer Denker, vor allem das Konzept der 'Gesellschaft des Spektakels' des französischen Philosophen Guy Debord, und Gendertheorien verwendet, um zu untersuchen, wie Collins ihre Kritik an Unterhaltungsspektakeln in der westlichen Kultur formuliert. Es wird somit in dieser Arbeit gezeigt, wie der Roman das tödliche Skript des Spektakels als Erzählstrategie einsetzt, um die Leser_innen vor ihrer Faszination für Reality-TV zu warnen. Die Tribute von Panem veranschaulicht eine Doppelfunktion des Spektakels: Unterhaltung als Hilfsmittel zur Ablenkung und Machtdemonstration zur Aufrechterhaltung der gesellschaftlichen Ordnung. Diese Arbeit untersucht, wie das Buch diese Doppelfunktion der Spiele aufzeigt und wie Machtstrukturen und Unterdrückung konstruiert werden. Es wird argumentiert, dass die Spiele lediglich ein brutaler Akt der Ausbeutung sind, die Herrschaft und Zwang als Unterhaltung tarnen. Macht existiert jedoch nicht ohne Widerstand, was im Roman im Zusammenhang mit Gender, einer gesellschaftlichen Konstruktion eingebettet in eine lange Geschichte der Unterdrückung, gezeigt wird. eng: Suzanne Collinss The Hunger Games falls under the genre of young adult dystopian fiction, which means that the novel depicts an imagined and post-apocalyptic future in which a totalitarian regime oppresses the population. The fictional governments power system is based on the Hunger Games, an annual political entertainment spectacle. This spectacle is staged as reality TV show, which is the basis for Collinss media criticism in the novel. Social criticism is a key characteristic of dystopias as dystopian fictions often draw attention to contemporary societal and political issues and include warnings for their readers. In this thesis, arguments from anti-capitalist thinkers, primarily the concept of ‘the society of the spectacle by French philosopher Guy Debord, and gender theory are used in order to expose the ways in which Collins formulates her critique of entertainment spectacles in Western culture. In this way, this thesis examines how the novel employs the deadly script of the spectacle as a narrative strategy to warn readers against their fascination with reality television. The Hunger Games illustrates a dual function of the spectacle: entertainment as a tool for distraction and the demonstration of power to maintain the social order. This thesis investigates how the book showcases this dual function of the Games and how power structures and oppression are constructed. It will be argued that the Games are merely a brutal act of exploitation that disguise domination and coercion as entertainment. However, it will be demonstrated that power does not exist without resistance, which is linked to gender, a social construction embedded into a long history of oppression, in the novel.
