The author differentiates in this study between Western and Arab scholarship. He suggests a critical approach to the study of attitudes, which would focus on social relationship rather than fixed characteristics and would examine the process of change in its historical context. He defines "modernization" as a state of the society and its institutions rather than merely a state of mind. The author concludes that we "need to go beyond the always and the never in order to explore a society undergoing a renewal and transcendence". (DÜI-Mjr)
