    The introduction to this special issue reviews the articles collected and presented in the volume. After an overview of the contents, the chapter turns to a more refined discussion of the insights resulting from the collection. These insights concern the productivity as well as limitations of canonicity, the importance of contextuality, the embodied practice of masculinity and the subsequent need to acknowledge intersectionality, and finally, it problematizes the rhetoric of ‘tradition(al)’ or ‘biblical’ masculinity. Mapping the future of the study of biblical reception and masculinities, the introduction identifies key issues and areas for further research. These are the necessity of a greater emphasis on multidisciplinarity, the need to demonstrating hermeneutical self-awareness, and a broadening of the scope of the field to include the Qur’an and Muslim cultures as well as newly emerging forms of Christianity in the global South. These features are key to the study of the reception of biblical masculinities going forward.

    The term ContactZone was coined in postcolonial discourse to signify the place where cultures and religions meet. It implies that first contact, cultural-religious exchange and conflict have always been determined by power-relations. Making use of communication theories, hermeneutics and aesthetics intercultural theology generates new terminologies and theoretical tools to explore these interactions. Its scope ranges from issues such as dialogue and syncretism to fundamentalism and ethnicity. Perspectives of culture, religion, race, class, gender and inclusion alike are involved in the necessary multi-axial approach. ContactZone creates a space where a choir of multiple voices is responding to the challenges of cultural religious pluralism, rethinking theology in the 21st century.The series comprises monographs (incl. PhD dissertations) and anthologies (incl. conference proceedings).[Der Begriff ContactZone wurde im postkolonialen Diskurs geprägt, um den Ort zu kennzeichnen, an dem Kulturen und Religionen aufeinandertreffen. Er impliziert, das Erster Kontakt, kulturell-religiöser Austausch und Konflikt immer auch durch Machtverhältnisse bestimmt werden. Unter Zuhilfenahme von Kommunikationstheorien, Hermeneutik und Ästhetik entwickelt Interkulturelle Theologie neue Terminologien und ein theoretisches Instrumentarium, um diese Interaktionsprozesse zu erforschen. C. Chao (1888-1979), perhaps China’s greatest twentieth century theologian, and Bliss Wiant (1895-1975), an American missionary and musicologist, in the 1920s and 1930s. Their creative interpretations of hymn translations, hymn writing, and music are explored through two hymnals produced by Chao and Wiant, Christian Fellowship Hymns and Hymns for the People (both 1931). They have made a lasting and unique contribution to Chinese hymnody, an important but so far neglected area in the study of the history of Christianity and contextual theology in China.[CHEN Ruiwen (*1984) untersucht die Kontextualisierung chinesischer Kirchenlieder am Beispiel der fruchtbaren Zusammenarbeit zwischen T. C. Chao (1888-1979), Chinas wohl prominentesten Theologen des 20. Jahrhunderts, und Bliss Wiant (1895-1975), einem amerikanischen Missionar und Musikwissenschaftler, in den 1920ern und 1930ern. This book tells a history of Catholic and Protestant Christianity since the sixteenth century by selecting visual themes that have shaped the development of the religion throughout the modern era.     To ask whether the postcolonial is postsecular demands asking for whom, where, and when? To that end, what follows is a reflection situated in two Canadian contexts, separated by time and place, but both connected to the 'colonial secular'. Engaged in the public deliberation and storytelling of civic secularism, through which political legitimacy is achieved through comparing religions, these two contexts are twenty-first century Québec and early-twentieth-century British Columbia. More specifically, I consider two moments in which the state (or its agents) exerted its authority in order to reshape bodily practice and stories of place: the debate over the 'secular charter' in Québec and the founding of the railway town of Prince Rupert on Tsimshian land. These acts of negotiation and law-making turned to religious forms of legitimation in a way that was at once ambivalent, comparative, and forgetful of the historical founding of the state's own power. That is, in forming their 'natural sovereignty' over others, states often forget that their claims to power are, in part, acts of pretending.

    "The Late Medieval Origins of the Modern Novel dramatically refreshes the age-old debate regarding the novel's origins and purpose. Acknowledging the excellence of Doody, Moore, and Pavel's recent work, scholarship has yet to account for literature's final ability, after millennia of engagement with royalty, heroes, epic journeys, morality tales, and political satire, to embrace the sexual, pained byways of the ordinary man and woman in the early modern period. Contrasting theories of the novel as a Protestant inheritance, this book ties the startling ontology and aesthetics of late medieval spirituality to the form's scandalous, experimental early modern emergence. Recalling these origins, Kent reestablishes the novel theoretically as a landscape of vulnerable 'presence encounter', and not primarily as a 'meaning event'.     "In this study Yongbom Lee re-examines the old Jesus-Paul debate with insights from current studies on intertextuality in Paul. Lee identifies Paul's typical ways of handling authoritative traditions in a number of cases providing a set of expectations as to how his use of them elsewhere might look. Lee begins by investigating the use of the Scriptures in the Rule of the Community and the Damascus Document. He then examines five cases of Paul's use of the Scriptures and contemporary Jewish exegetical traditions and three cases of his use of the Jesus tradition. Despite the skepticism concerning Paul's knowledge and appreciation of the Jesus tradition, the fact that his use of the Jesus tradition is similar to that of the Scriptures and contemporary Jewish exegetical traditions--with respect to its presumption of authority, various citation methods, and its creative application to the situation of his readers--provides the evidence for its importance to him."--Bloomsbury Publishing pt. 1.
