    This study analyzes the critical role played by farmers' organizations (FOs) in transforming agriculture in Africa. Specifically, it provides an overview of the state of continental and regional FOs in Africa. It also uses three-country (Senegal, Uganda and Zambia) case studies to discuss the structure, functioning, objectives, and financing of the FOs in these selected countries. Findings show that the FOs in the three case study countries are more or less well-structured. The national-level (umbrella) FOs are linked to the local-level substructures. However, membership in these FOs is voluntary and a sizeable majority of small-scale producers is yet to be part of the organized FOs. The umbrella organizations represent just about 2.5 million, 2 million, and 550,000 (equivalent to about 30%, 10.9% and 6.4%) small-scale farmers in Senegal, Uganda, and Zambia, respectively. Evidence from the continental, regional and the three country case studies suggests that many FOs face capacity and financial constraints. Nearly all FOs are dependent on external resources. The FOs generate meagre proportion of their finances from members - just about 5% of the annual budget. Programs and incentives to rally members to contribute towards the FOs would be timely. Some viable ways of raising revenue may include strengthening of farmer-driven cooperatives, transfer of knowledge, innovation and training of members, and creating value addition through processing of agricultural produce. The evolving agricultural policies have now seen FOs assuming the roles previously played by governments, such as agricultural education, marketing of produce, and provision and distribution of farm inputs. However, many of these FOs are not equipped to do so because of limited skills, weak organizational capacity, and severe resource restraints. In the end, FOs are undermined by attempts to take on too many roles and taking on over-ambitious objectives and providing public goods. In order to move agriculture to the next level, the existing FOs require energizing, first through building the capacity of the existing leaders, increasing the membership base and their financial contribution to support the operations of the organizations, and by creating opportunities for the FOs to engage policy makers on a regular basis. Governments should also give FOs the right to sit in all decision-making bodies examining agricultural, food and rural development issues. Financial support and funding from donors should be merited and channeled to accountable organizations, and should expand its focus to include institutional development that would strengthen the FOs rather than only supporting microprojects. There is also need to improve linkages and coordination among the various projects and programs supported by donor funding.

    O avanço do Império Romano em direção à Palestina pode ser datado em 63 a.C., quando Pompeu conseguiu tomar Jerusalém sem muitos problemas. Esta conquista que fará com que a Palestina permaneça subjugada à águia romana, cujo domínio alimentaria o ódio do povo por muitos séculos. A Palestina era, portanto, um conjunto de cidades dominadas e submetidas ao poder romano. É possível afirmar que a maior parte da história judaica na Palestina (e as províncias da Galiléia, Samaria e Judéia do primeiro sé-culo) envolveu protesto e resistência contra as provocações e opressão romana. Jesus nasceu e viveu no contexto social do século I d.C., um período em que a importância do império romano é incontestável e determinante. As principais vítimas da política expansionista romana eram justamente os camponeses. Para eles, a dominação romana significava fundamental-mente uma pesada tributação e, mais do que isso, uma séria ameaça a sua existência, haja vista que muitos deles foram expulsos de suas terras. Concluise que Jesus falou e agiu numa situação de injustiça sistêmica e de maldade estrutural em que o sacrifício de uma grande porcentagem de pessoas era necessário para tornar o processo de construção do império possível. Nesse contexto, na linha dos profetas do Antigo Testamento Jesus tem uma proposta antissistema, de defesa dos últimos e de promoção da vida. The advance of the Roman Empire towards Palestine can be dated from 63 BC, when Pompey took Jerusalem without many problems. This achievement will make Palestine remain subdued to the Roman eagle; whose rule would feed the hatred of the people for many centuries. Palestine was, therefore, a group of cities dominated and submiĴed to the Roman power. It is possible to state that most of the Jewish history in Palestine (and the provinces of Galilee, Samaria, and Judea of the first century) involved pro-test and resistance against Roman provocations and oppression. Jesus was born and lived in the social context of the first century AD, a period in whi-ch the importance of the Roman Empire is incontestable and determinant. The main victims of the Roman expansionist policy were precisely the pea-sants. For them, roman domination fundamentally meant heavy taxation and, more than that, a serious threat to their existence since many of them were expelled from their lands. It follows that Jesus spoke and acted in a situation of systemic injustice and structural malice in which the sacrifice of a large percentage of people was necessary to make the process of buil-ding the empire possible. In this context, in line with the Old Testament prophets, Jesus has an anti-systemic proposal, to defend the forgoĴen and to promote life.

    Walker diggings in the peasant hermeneutics of the Bible intends to be a partial approach to a long and complex process of peasant re-readings that come from afar, coated with presences and languages in the very pages of the Bible, in diverse geographies of the continent as well as symbolic, cultural, and ancestral memories from each one of our countries. Under the name of rural pastoral ministry, peasant catechesis, and earth theology, the churches deployed evangelizing missions in Latin American and Caribbean countryside. This article reports on these developments and their continuity within the Latin American and Caribbean biblical movement in the churches and the rural Basic Ecclesial Communities. In a journey of approximately thirty years (1992-2022), in the most diverse expressions, digging into the Life and into the Bible, the peasant hermeneutics of the Bible has taken flesh and shape. Its most current palpitations are collected in this 89 issue of the Revista de Interpretación Bíblica Latinoamericana. Escarbares andantes en la Hermenéutica Campesina de la Biblia intenta ser una aproximación parcial a un largo y complejo proceso de relecturas campesinas que vienen andando de muy lejos, revestidas de presencias y lenguajes en las mismas páginas de la Biblia, en diversas geografías del continente y en memorias simbólicas, culturales y ancestrales de cada uno de nuestros países. Bajo las denominaciones de pastoral rural, catequesis campesina y teología de la Tierra, las iglesias desplegaron misiones evangelizadoras en los campos latinoamericanos y caribeños. De esos desarrollos da noticia este artículo y de sus continuidades dentro del Movimiento Bíblico Latinoamericano y Caribeño en las iglesias y las comunidades eclesiales de base rurales. En un recorrido de aproximadamente tres decenas de años (1992-2022), en las más diversas expresiones, escarbando en la Vida y en la Biblia, ha tomado cuerpo y forma la Hermenéutica Campesina de la Biblia, cuyas más actuales palpitaciones se recogen en este número 89 de la Revista de Interpretación Bíblica Latinoamericana.

    This article is not located in this field of the wide number of existing methods, but in the one of methodological principles that result from biblical practice. It is an attempt to extract what gives identity and meaning to peasant reading of the Bible, from the experience built in the last 30 years in peasant Bible schools, in courses, and workshops that have been carried out with peasants in the territories, with peasants displaced from their lands, with urban, mining, fishing, agricultural, shepherd peasants, owners of small parcels, and day laborer peasants. These methodological reflections emerge from the experiences, from conversations on paths, houses, and riverbanks, by the light of a candle, without any prejudice rather than the desire to learn and strengthen the peasant identity. This methodological path is synthesized in seven criteria that serve as clear and safe clues to make the encounter with the Bible a dialogue with the peasant project of God. existentes, sino en el campo de los principios metodológicos que resultan de la práctica bíblica. Es un intento por extractar aquello que le da identidad y sentido a la Lectura Campesina de la Biblia, desde la experiencia construida en los últimos 30 años en las escuelas bíblicas campesinas, en cursos y talleres que se han realizado con campesinos en el campo, con campesinos desplazados del campo, con campesinos urbanos, campesinos mineros, campesinos pescadores, campesinos agricultores, campesinos pastores, campesinos dueños de pequeñas parcelas y con campesinos jornaleros. Las presentes reflexiones metodológicas, emergen de la experiencia, de las conversas hechas en los caminos, las casas y las orillas de los ríos, a la luz de una velita, sin más prejuicios que el deseo de aprender y de afianzar la identidad campesina. Este andar metodológico se sintetiza en siete criterios que sirven como pistas claras y seguras para hacer del encuentro con la Biblia, un diálogo con el proyecto campesino de Dios.

    A zone of complex mobilities, a region with a diversified history and plural development, a key space for major socio-economic and political balances, the Sahel has produced its own internal conflicts, but also the mechanisms to manage them. However, for a decade, the Sahel has also been a region affected by crises resulting from the presence of radical groups which strongly affect pastoral areas and have turned into cross-border conflicts, with multidirectional contamination between areas which has led to numerous military engagements. national, regional and international. This note covers on the one hand many subjects related to the economies of arid zones, of which pastoralism is the main mode of development and in particular with the methods of management of the resources of these agroecosystems, in particular the water resources that they feature. It offers a reading that seeks to enhance the endogenous mechanisms of conflict management in pastoral areas. On the other hand, it deals with the interactions with the conflictual dynamics that have appeared with the emergence of radical movements, the takeover of territories with pastoral dominance by the latter and the counter-reaction of agricultural societies and that of the governments of the region. Finally, it seeks to identify some avenues of work to better understand these areas and to seek solution options.
