The reception of King Solomon shows a huge variety of aspects, motifs and traditions. Thus, he became a useful tool for different eras and their respective necessities. This paper outlines the main facets of the biblical and non-biblical Solomon and describes how they come together, complement or contradict each other in different times, genres and traditions. The focus lies especially on literature and music in the era of Baroque (1600–1750) and Modern Times in German speaking countries. It becomes obvious that biblical reception always includes a reception of the time of reception itself. Solomon, who has been explained by his receptions, in his turn explains their own time to themselves.
