He understood the costs of heroism, the fragility of fame, and the power of the military culture of brotherhood.In Heroic Forms, Stephen Rupp connects Cervantes’s complex and inventive approach to literary genre and his many representations of early modern warfare. Examining Cervantes’s plays and poetry as well as his prose, Rupp demonstrates how Cervantes’s works express his perceptions of military life and how Cervantes interpreted the experience of war through the genres of the era: epic, tragedy, pastoral, romance, and picaresque fiction

    Main description: Against the backdrop of discussion on spatial experience in the early modern age the author compares the portrayal of perception and perspective in Cervantes' novellas with that evidenced in other Spanish novellas of the 16th and 17th centuries. The focus here is an innovative one, concentrating on the spatial perspectivization of perception and the act of perception itself. From this vantage the author is able to cast light on what Hatzfeld called the "mysterious perspective effect" of Cervantes' texts. In contrast to an opposition between engaño and desengaño (illusion and disillusion) the novellas are shown to operate around a contextualized, subject-related and dynamically developed epistemology and concept of truth. This places them at odds with what Maravall calls the 'guided nature' of Spanish Baroque society. The study provides numerous impulses for a new approach to Cervantes, the 'Golden Age' and novella production and narrative theory from the early modern age up to today

    Main description: Vor dem Hintergrund der Diskussion über die Raumerfahrung der Frühen Neuzeit vergleicht die Autorin die Darstellung von Wahrnehmung und Perspektive in Cervantes' (1547-1616) Novellen mit derjenigen in anderen spanischen Novellen des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts. Im Mittelpunkt stehen erstmals die räumliche Perspektivierung der Wahrnehmung und der Wahrnehmungsakt selbst. Es gelingt der Autorin, die bis heute "geheimnisvolle Perspektivenwirkung" (Hatzfeld) der cervantinischen Texte durchschaubar zu machen. Statt einer Opposition von engaño und desengaño, von Illusion und Desillusionierung, enthüllen die Novellen ein kontextualisiertes, subjektbezogenes und dynamisch entfaltetes Wahrheits- und Erkenntniskonzept. Sie befinden sich damit im Spannungsverhältnis zur "guided culture" (Maravall) der spanischen Barockgesellschaft.     Law and History in Cervantes’ Don Quixote is a deep consideration of the intellectual environment that gave rise to Cervantes’ seminal work. Susan Byrne demonstrates how Cervantes synthesized the debates surrounding the two most authoritative discourses of his era – those of law and history – into a new aesthetic product, the modern novel.Byrne uncovers the empirical underpinnings of Don Quixote through a close philological study of Cervantes’ sly questioning of and commentary on these fields. As she skilfully demonstrates, while sixteenth-century historiographers and jurists across southern Europe sought the philosophical nexus of their fields, Cervantes created one through the adventures of a protagonist whose history is all about justice. Cascardi argues that when public speech is constrained, as it was in seventeenth-century Spain, politics must be addressed through indirect forms including comedy, myth, and travellers' tales.Cervantes, Literature, and the Discourse of Politics convincingly re-engages the ancient roots of political theory in modern literature by situating Cervantes within a long line of political thinkers. Cascardi notably connects Cervantes's political theory to Plato's, much as the writer's literary criticism has been firmly linked to Aristotle's. He also shows how Cervantes's view of literature provided a compelling alternative to the modern, scientific politics of Machiavelli and Hobbes, highlighting the potential interplay of literature and politics in an ideal state

David Quint discovers a unified narrative and deliberate thematic design in a novel long taught as the very definition of the picaresque and as a rambling succession of individual episodes. Quint shows how repeated motifs and verbal details link the episodes, often in surprising and heretofore unnoticed ways. Don Quijote emerges as a work that charts and reflects upon the historical transition from feudalism to the modern times of a moneyed, commercial society. In Part One of the novel, this change is measured in a shift in the nature of erotic desire, and we find Don Quijote torn between his love for Dulcinea and his hopes to wed for wealth and social advancement. In Part Two, Don Quijote himself changes from anarchic madman to a gentler, wiser hero--a member of a middle class in the making. Throughout, Cervantes meditates on the literary form that he is inventing as a response to modernity, questioning the novel's relationship to other genres and the place of heroism and imagination within stories of everyday life. A new and coherent guide through the maze-like structure of Don Quijote, this book invites readers to appreciate the perennial modernity of Cervantes's masterpiece---a novel that confronts times not so distant from our own

    For Miguel de Cervantes, to narrate a Mediterranean experience is to necessarily speak of an emotional experience. Affective Geographies takes as its point of departure the premise that literature is as influential in constructing the Mediterranean as are its geographic, climatic, or economic features. As the writer with the most vast and varied Mediterranean experience of his era, Cervantes is exceptionally well-suited for the critical task of recovering the literary Mediterranean. Engaging with the interdisciplinary fields of Mediterranean studies, affect theory, and the history of emotion, Paul Michael Johnson reads Cervantes's texts alongside the affective structures that inscribe the Mediterranean as a space of conflict, commerce, expansion, and empire. In particular, he argues that Cervantes's writing, with its uncommon focus on the Moorish, Islamic, and North African experience, can serve to realign misconceptions about the Mediterranean we have inherited today. Affective Geographies proposes that, with a more than four-hundred-year history of impacting the hearts and minds of readers, Cervantes's works constitute a literary longue durée, ramifying beyond fiction to alter the popular imaginary and long-term cultural landscape
