    In einer Zeit, in der das Eis an den Polen der Erde nicht nur symbolisch, sondern realiter immer dünner wird, lohnt es umso mehr, einen Blick zurück auf die literatur- und kulturgeschichtliche Karriere des faszinierenden Phänomens ›Eis‹ zu werfen. Weit über die deutschsprachige Literatur hinaus untersucht die Studie das symbolische Potenzial des Faszinationskomplexes ›Eis/Kälte‹ an einer Vielzahl von literarischen, ikonischen und filmischen Texturen von der Frühen Neuzeit bis heute, bei Schwerpunkten auf den synchronen Schnitten ›um 1800‹, ›um 1900‹ und ›um 2000‹. Dadurch wird ein Blick auf diejenigen kulturgeschichtlich einflussreichen Diskurskomplexe und Positionen möglich, die ›Eis‹ als kollektiv verfügbares Symbol zu bündeln und artikulierbar zu machen vermag. Vertiefende exemplarische Einzelanalysen zu Romanen von u. a. Christoph Ransmayr, Sten Nadolny, Martin Mosebach und Peter Høeg machen deutlich, dass und wie mit Hilfe der ›Eis‹-Symbolik höchst komplexe literarische Strukturen generiert werden können.

    What is a memory of the future? Is it a myth, a fiction of a severed arm, a post-human debate or a broken time machine? In an increasingly insecure future-world there is an urgency to consider and debate these questions. Memories of the Future: On Countervision addresses these concerns by speculating on the connections between memory and futurity in fields such as counter-histories, women’s studies, science fiction, art and design, technology, philosophy and politics. This book reveals how these subjects regenerate at the intersections of vision, counter-cultural production and the former present. The volume links the re-imaginings of memory into the present with topics such as the fever dream allegory of the adolescent social experience, soft technologies of future dress, reinventions of monetary exchange, rekindled subjectivities of school days, and technics and human progression.     This book provides a much-needed comparative approach to the history of cities by investigating the dissemination of cultural forms between cities of the Atlantic world.     "Der Selbstmord", schrieb Walter Benjamin in seinem Passagen-Werk, erscheint "als die Quintessenz der Moderne". Und in der Tat: Nachdem der Versuch, sich das Leben zu nehmen, über Jahrhunderte als Sünde oder Ausdruck einer psychischen Krankheit betrachtet, in einigen Ländern sogar strafrechtlich sanktioniert wurde, vollzieht sich seit dem 20. Jahrhundert ein tiefgreifender Wandel, der zur Entstehung einer neuen Sterbekultur beigetragen hat. Der eigene Tod gilt immer häufiger als "Projekt", das vom Individuum selbst zu gestalten und zu verantworten ist. Wer sich das Leben nimmt, will es nicht mehr nur auslöschen, sondern auch ergreifen und ihm neue Bedeutung geben. Thomas Macho erzählt die facettenreiche Geschichte des Suizids in der Moderne und zeichnet dessen Umwertung in den verschiedensten kulturellen Feldern nach: in der Politik (Suizid als Protest und Attentat), im Recht (Entkriminalisierung des Suizids), in der Medizin (Sterbehilfe) sowie in der Philosophie, der Kunst und den Medien. Er geht zurück zu den kulturellen Wurzeln des Suizids, liest Tagebücher, schaut Filme, betrachtet Kunstwerke, studiert reale Fallgeschichten und zeigt insbesondere, welche Resonanzeffekte sich zwischen den unterschiedlichen Freitodmotiven ergeben. Seine Diagnose: Wir leben in zunehmend suizidfaszinierten Zeiten.

    Cultural history is increasingly informed by the history of material culture—the ways in which individuals or entire societies create and relate to objects both mundane and extraordinary—rather than on textual evidence alone. Books such as The Hare with Amber Eyes and A History of the World in 100 Objects indicate the growing popularity of this way of understanding the past. In History and Its Objects, Peter N. Miller uncovers the forgotten origins of our fascination with exploring the past through its artifacts by highlighting the role of antiquarianism—a pursuit ignored and derided by modem academic history—in grasping the significance of material culture.From the efforts of Renaissance antiquarians, who reconstructed life in the ancient world from coins, inscriptions, seals, and other detritus, to amateur historians in the nineteenth century working within burgeoning national traditions, Miller connects collecting—whether by individuals or institutions—to the professionalization of the historical profession, one which came to regard its progenitors with skepticism and disdain. The struggle to articulate the value of objects as historical evidence, then, lies at the heart both of academic history-writing and of the popular engagement with things. Ultimately, this book demonstrates that our current preoccupation with objects is far from novel and reflects a human need to reexperience the past as a physical presence.

Der um 1500 am kurpfälzischen Hof zu Heidelberg angefertigte dt. Malagis bietet ein kurioses Stück Literatur, welches hier erstmals einer umfassenden Untersuchung unterzogen wird. Die bunte Erzählwelt und der Perspektivenreichtum des Textes erscheinen besonders geeignet, verschiedene, untereinander verschränkte Phänomene spätmittelalterlichen Erzählens gezielt in den Blick zu nehmen, und sie zugleich auf ihre Wechselwirkungen mit Prozessen historischer Sinn- und Bedeutungsgenese hin zu befragen: So werden einerseits im Rückgriff auf tradierte Erzählmuster (i.e. repetitive Szenengestaltung, mehrsträngige Handlungsführung) Möglichkeiten strukturorientierten Erzählens ausgenutzt, um die Vielfalt der Textwelt erkennbar zu machen und handlungsrelevante Differenzierungen in sie einzuführen, andererseits können im Spiel der Reprisen verschiedene Handlungsoptionen abgesetzt dargestellt und so einer Beurteilung zugeführt werden. Gezeigt wird dies im analytischen Zugriff von zwei Seiten her: Oszillierend zwischen textnah gehaltenen Szeneninterpretationen, anhand derer textspezifische Semantisierungsprozesse verfolgt werden können, und der Fokussierung diverser Strategien narrativer Organisation mündet die Analyse in eine thick description der Erzählwelt des dt. Malagis und der in ihr waltenden Logiken. Die Studie erschließt den konstitutiven Zusammenhang von Erzählinhalt und narrativer Gestaltung und verdeutlicht, wie die Problem(lösungs)konstellationen des Textes einem auf Dynamik und Dialogisierung angelegten Selbstbeschreibungsmodell fürstlicher Herrschaftsträger fundamental zuarbeiten.

    What is a memory of the future? Is it a myth, a fiction of a severed arm, a post-human debate or a broken time machine? In an increasingly insecure future-world there is an urgency to consider and debate these questions. Memories of the Future: On Countervision addresses these concerns by speculating on the connections between memory and futurity in fields such as counter-histories, women’s studies, science fiction, art and design, technology, philosophy and politics. This book reveals how these subjects regenerate at the intersections of vision, counter-cultural production and the former present. The volume links the re-imaginings of memory into the present with topics such as the fever dream allegory of the adolescent social experience, soft technologies of future dress, reinventions of monetary exchange, rekindled subjectivities of school days, and technics and human progression.
