    Two are the starting points of this book. On the one hand, the use of Doña Marina/La Malinche as a symbol of the violation of the Americas by the Spanish conquerors as well as a metaphor of her treason to the Mexican people. On the other, the role of the translations of Bartolomé de las Casas’s Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias in the creation and expansion of the Spanish Black Legend. The author aims to go beyond them by considering the role of translators and interpreters during the early colonial period in Spanish America and by looking at the translations of the Spanish chronicles as instrumental in the promotion of other European empires. The book discusses literary, religious and administrative documents and engages in a dialogue with other disciplines that can provide a more nuanced view of the role of translation, and of the mediators, during the controversial encounter/clash between Europeans and Amerindians.

    The book is one of the few in-depth investigations into the nature of EU legal translation and its impact on national legal languages. It is also the first attempt to characterise EU Polish, a language of supranational law and a hybrid variant of legal Polish emerging via translation. The book applies Chesterman’s concept of textual fit, that is how translations differ from non-translations, to demonstrate empirically on large corpora how the Polish eurolect departs from the conventions of legal and general Polish both at the macrostructural and the microstructural level. The findings are juxtaposed with the pre-accession version of Polish law to track the «Europeanisation» of legal Polish – recent changes brought about by the unprecedented inflow of EU translations. «In short, this is a very rich book with much to recommend it.»(Vilelmini Sosoni, The Journal of Specialised Translation 25/2016)«It is hard to overestimate the merits of Biel’s outstanding book.     Este libro pretende aportar una contribución al estudio comparativo multilingüe de resúmenes de patente (RP) para el traductor outsider. ¿Guarda el género textual una relación con la estrategia de traducción? ¿Cuáles son las competencias que debe desarrollar el traductor de patentes? La autora rompe moldes al incidir en la importancia del contexto de producción de RP para el análisis textual previo a la traducción. La originalidad del enfoque radica tanto en la inclusión de textos chinos como en la delimitación de factores extratextuales decisivos para la lectura y la toma de decisiones lingüísticas. ¿Se puede objetivar el análisis (con)textual previo a la traducción? ¿Son relevantes las variables disciplina y lengua para la traducción especializada? Para contestar a estas preguntas, es preciso deshacerse de la visión dualista que ha desconcertado hasta la fecha al traductor. ¿La solución propuesta? Adoptar una perspectiva integradora que tome en cuenta los propósitos comunicativos y las intenciones de los participantes, así como las expectativas de los mismos en pos de garantizar una comunicación exitosa entre los múltiples interventores.

The twelve essays in the volume span a range of work from Eastern and Western Europe, Canada and the United States. For the first time, this book draws together existing translation theory with contemporary practice to shed light on a hitherto neglected aspect of the production process. How does the theatre translator mediate between source text, performance text and target audience? What happens when theatre is transposed from one culture to another? What are the obstacles to theatre translation, and what are the opportunities? Central to the debate throughout is the role of the translator in creating not only a linguistic text but also a performance text, as the contributors repeatedly demonstrate an illuminating sensibility to the demands and potential of theatre production.     Humour found in audiovisual products is, of course, performative in nature. If we consider instances of humour – any droll moment occurring in today’s fare of mixed-genre products as a composite of cognition, emotion, interaction and expression – we see that the verbal code becomes just one component of four equally significant elements. And, as ‘expression’ is not limited to verbal output alone, humour may of course be created in absence of a verbal code. Translating humour for audiovisuals is not too different from translating verbal humour tout court. What makes humour occurring within audiovisual texts more problematic is the fact that it may be visually anchored; in other words a gag or a joke may pivot on verbal content directed at a specific element that is present within the graphic system of the same text. As the term itself suggests, audiovisuals contain two overlying structures: a visual and an auditory channel each of which contain a series of both verbal and non-verbal elements which inextricably cross-cut one another.     Audiovisual Translation: Dubbing is an introductory textbook that provides a solid overview of the world of dubbing and is fundamentally interactive in approach. A companion to Audiovisual Translation: Subtitling, it follows a similar structure and is accompanied by downloadable resources. Based on first-hand experience in the field, the book combines translation practice with other related tasks - usually commissioned to dialogue writers and dubbing assistants - thus offering a complete introduction to the field of dubbing. It develops diversified skills, presents a broad picture of the industry, engages with the various controversies in the field, and challenges prevailing stereotypes. The individual chapters cover the map of dubbing in the world, the dubbing market and professional environment, text segmentation into takes or loops, lip-syncing, the challenge of emulating oral discourse, the semiotic nature of audiovisual texts, and specific audiovisual translation issues. The book further raises a number of research questions and looks at some of the unresolved challenges of this very specific form of translation. It includes graded exercises covering core skills that can be practised in class or at home, individually or collectively.
