    An appeal for the importance of theory, utopia, and close consideration of our contemporary dark times What does any particular theory allow us to do? What is the value of doing so? And who benefits? In Invoking Hope, Phillip E. Wegner argues for the undiminished importance of the practices of theory, utopia, and a deep and critical reading of our current situation of what Bertolt Brecht refers to as finsteren Zeiten, or dark times. Invoking Hope was written in response to three events that occurred in 2016: the five hundredth anniversary of the publication of Thomas More's Utopia; the one hundredth anniversary of the founding text in theory, Ferdinand de Saussure's Course in General Linguistics; and the rise of the right-wing populism that culminated in the election of Donald Trump. Wegner offers original readings of major interventions in theory alongside dazzling utopian imaginaries developed from classical Greece to our global present--from Theodor Adorno, Ernst Bloch, Alain Badiou, Jacques Derrida, Fredric Jameson, Sarah Ahmed, Susan Buck-Morss, and Jacques Lacan to such works as Plato's Republic, W. E. B. Du Bois's John Brown, Isak Dinesen's "Babette's Feast," Kim Stanley Robinson's 2312, and more. Wegner comments on an expansive array of modernist and contemporary literature, film, theory, and popular culture. With Invoking Hope, Wegner provides an innovative lens for considering the rise of right-wing populism and the current crisis in democracy. He discusses challenges in the humanities and higher education and develops strategies of creative critical reading and hope against the grain of current trends in scholarship.

    Der jeweilige transgressive – grenzüberschreitende – Charakter der Literatur findet seinen besonders interessanten und auch kulturwissenschaftlich relevanten Ausdruck in literarischen Werken, die das vielfältige Verhältnis zwischen dem persönlichen Selbst- und Fremdverständnis in der Wechselbeziehung internationaler, interkultureller Begegnungen thematisieren. Im Sammelband setzen sich polnische, tschechische und ungarische LiteraturwissenschaftlerInnen mit Texten, bzw. Lebenswerken aus Ostmitteleuropa auseinander, in denen vor allem der Zusammenhang zwischen den geschichtlichen Turbulenzen und den Phänomenen der Identitätswandlung – wie der Wechsel der Sprache, der politischer Überzeugungen und der nationalen Zugehörigkeit – im Mittelpunkt stehen. Die Aufsätze zeigen jedoch nicht nur ein breites Spektrum von poetischen Annährungen zu Grenzfragen der Identität auf, sondern sie bezeugen auch die Fähigkeit der Literatur, das individuell und das kollektiv Traumatische zu überwinden.Mit Beiträgen vonMiłosława Borzyszkowska-Szewczyk, Marion Brandt, Ivana Cahová, Iván Halász, Kornélia Horváth, Anikó Kurucz, Orsolya Lénárt, Marcell Mártonffy, Illés Molnár, Magor Plugor, Mihály Riszovannij, Csilla Szalagyi, Eliza Szymańska, Karl Vajda, Paul Videsott, Zoltán Zsávolya. The trespassing character of literature is expressed in a fascinating and relevant way—also from the perspective of cultural studies—by those literary works which convey the experience of forming a personal identity and that of otherness in the context of international and intercultural encounters. Those works from East Central European literature which discuss changes of identity especially, such as moving from one language to another, or changing someone's political stance or national commitment, have been selected for this volume. In this volume, Karen Barad, theoretical physicist and feminist theorist, elaborates her theory of agential realism. Offering an account of the world as a whole rather than as composed of separate natural and social realms, agential realism is at once a new epistemology, ontology, and ethics. The starting point for Barad's analysis is the philosophical framework of quantum physicist Niels Bohr. Barad extends and partially revises Bohr's philosophical views in light of current scholarship in physics, science studies, and the philosophy of science as well as feminist, poststructuralist, and other critical social theories. In the process, she significantly reworks understandings of space, time, matter, causality, agency, subjectivity, and objectivity.In an agential realist account, the world is made of entanglements of "social" and "natural" agencies, where the distinction between the two emerges out of specific intra-actions. Intra-activity is an inexhaustible dynamism that configures and reconfigures relations of space-time-matter. In explaining intra-activity, Barad reveals questions about how nature and culture interact and change over time to be fundamentally misguided. And she reframes understanding of the nature of scientific and political practices and their "interrelationship." Thus she pays particular attention to the responsible practice of science, and she emphasizes changes in the understanding of political practices, critically reworking Judith Butler's influential theory of performativity. Finally, Barad uses agential realism to produce a new interpretation of quantum physics, demonstrating that agential realism is more than a means of reflecting on science; it can be used to actually do science
