    Although the influence of Homer on Western literature has long commanded critical attention, little has been written on how various generations of readers have found menaing in his texts. These seven essays explore the ways in which the Illiad and the Odyssey have been read from the time of Homer through the Renaissance. By asking what questions early readers expected the texts to answer and looking at how these expectations changed over time, the authors clarify the position of the Illiad and the Odyssey in the intellectual world of antiqueity while offering historical insight into the nature of reading.The collection surveys the entire field of preserved ancient interpretations of Homer, beginning with the fictional audiences portrayed within the poems themselves, proceedings to readings by Aristotle, the Stoics, and Aristarchus and Crates, and culminating in the spritiualized allegorical reading current among Platonists of the fifth and sixth centuries C.E. The influence of these ancient interpretations is then examined in Byzantium and in the Latin West during the Renaissance. Contributors to this volume are Robert Browning, Anthony Grafton, Robert Lamberton, A.A. Long, James Porter, Nicholas Richardson, and Charles Segal.Robert Lamberton is Assistant Professor of Classics and John J. Keaney is Professor of Classics, both at Princeton University.Originally published in 1977.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.     Although some of the most distinguished German novels written since about 1770 are generally considered to be Bildungsromane, the term Bildungsroman is all too frequently used in English without an awareness of the tradition from which it arose. Professor Swales concentrates on the roles of plot, characterization, and narrative commentary in novels by Wieland, Goethe, Stifter, Keller, Mann, and Hesse. By pointing out that the goal in each work is both elusive and problematic, he suggests a previously unsuspected ironic intent.     The year 1999 saw the 250th anniversary of the birth of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Germany's greatest writer. Appropriately, literary scholars within Germany and beyond paid tribute to this remarkable talent. But a number of commentators also noted that Goethe is often revered rather than read, known of rather than known. It is the aim of this study to provide a corrective to this state of affairs. The authors concentrate on the literary work and offer analyses that represent an impassioned, but by no means uncritical, advocacy -- one that seeks to persuade both academic critics and general readers alike that Goethe is one of the key figures of European modernity. To an extent that is virtually unique in modern literature, Goethe was active in a whole number of literary genres. He was a superb poet, unrivaled in the variety of his expressive modes, and in his ability to combine intellectual sophistication with experiential immediacy. He also wrote short stories and novels throughout his life, ranging from theThe Sorrows of Young Werther, to The Elective Affinities. He was also a highly skilled dramatist, both in the historical mode and in the classical verse-drama. Above all else, Goethe is the author of Faust: a workthat attempts -- and achieves -- more than any other modern European drama. Erika Swales is College Lecturer and Fellow of King's College, Cambridge. Martin Swales is Professor of German at University College London.

    Erwein Freiherr von Aretin gehörte in den Jahren 1915 bis 1922 zu Rilkes engerem Bekanntenkreis. Er entstammte einem bayerischen Adelsgeschlecht und war zunächst als Astronom und Mathematiker an einer Wiener Sternwarte tätig, bis er nach 1922 als politischer Journalist und couragierter Hitler-Gegner ins Rampenlicht der öffentlichkeit trat - womit er sich später KZ-Haft und jahrelange Beobachtung durch die Gestapo einhandelte. Im Briefwechsel mit Rilke zeichnet sich sein leidenschaftliches Interesse an Politik und Geschichte schon deutlich ab, doch stehen für Rilke selbst ganz andere Dinge im Vordergrund. Der Dichter begegnet "seinem" Astronomen auf Vermittlung der Fürstin Thurn und Taxis zum ersten Mal 1915 in München und ist fasziniert vom naturwissenschaftlichen Horizont des neuen Freundes. Unter Anleitung Aretins setzt sich Rilke, dessen poetisches Interesse für die Welt des "Sternischen" seit dem Stunden-Buch offen zutage liegt, mit höherer Mathematik und Astronomie auseinander. Und beide Briefpartner streben - parapsychologischen Phänomenen gegenüber aufgeschlossen - nach einem ganzheitlichen Weltverständnis, in dem die zeittypischen Spannungen zwischen Rationalismus und Irrationalismus aufgehoben sind. Für Rilke ist die Begegnung mit Aretin äußerst inspirierend: Vielfältige Metaphern aus dem Bildvorrat von Astronomie und astrologischer Kosmologie durchziehen das lyrische Spätwerk, das in den Jahren der Freundschaft mit Aretin entsteht. Der Briefwechsel zwischen dem "Dichter und seinem Astronomen" wirft ein Schlaglicht auf bisher kaum bekannte Aspekte von Rilkes Leben und Werk

    Although the influence of Homer on Western literature has long commanded critical attention, little has been written on how various generations of readers have found menaing in his texts. These seven essays explore the ways in which the Illiad and the Odyssey have been read from the time of Homer through the Renaissance. By asking what questions early readers expected the texts to answer and looking at how these expectations changed over time, the authors clarify the position of the Illiad and the Odyssey in the intellectual world of antiqueity while offering historical insight into the nature of reading.The collection surveys the entire field of preserved ancient interpretations of Homer, beginning with the fictional audiences portrayed within the poems themselves, proceedings to readings by Aristotle, the Stoics, and Aristarchus and Crates, and culminating in the spritiualized allegorical reading current among Platonists of the fifth and sixth centuries C.E. The influence of these ancient interpretations is then examined in Byzantium and in the Latin West during the Renaissance. Contributors to this volume are Robert Browning, Anthony Grafton, Robert Lamberton, A.A. Long, James Porter, Nicholas Richardson, and Charles Segal.Robert Lamberton is Assistant Professor of Classics and John J.
