    This paper, written by an anthropologist, describes his fieldwork experience in the Afro-Brazilian temple Casa das Minas, São Luis do Maranhão, in 1981-1982, done with the German writer Hubert Fichte. Although correcting some statements in Fichte's book on the same subject and criticizing his indiscretion towards several of his informants, the article emphasizes the learning process with the German "ethnopoet": his skillful interview technique, the priority given to subjects of general interest, the importance of card files, the sought for beauty in the statements… As to the methodological differences between ethnography and ethnopoetry, the latter is free from the conventions of anthropological work, being able to concentrate on the beauty of the text and to conceive ethnography as a literary form. On the other hand, the advantages of ethnography, especially in Malinowski's tradition, are in the commitment with true facts and the precision of details. – See also, in this number of Pandaemonium Germanicum, Willi Bolle's complementary article on "Ethnopoetry and Ethnography". Dies ist der Erfahrungsbericht eines brasilianischen Anthropologen über seine Feldforschung in Zusammenarbeit mit dem deutschen Schriftsteller Hubert Fichte in der Casa das Minas, in São Luis do Maranhão, 1981-1982. Wenngleich einige Fehlinformationen Fichtes berichtigt sowie seine Indiskretion gegenüber Informanten kritisiert werden, stellt dieser Aufsatz die mit dem deutschen 'Ethnopoeten' gemachten Lernerfahrungen in den Vordergrund: seine Kunst des Interviews, die Priorität von Gegenständen allgemeinen Interesses, die Wichtigkeit der Karteikarten-Datei, die Suche nach Schönheit in den Aussagen... Was die methodologischen Unterschiede betrifft, so erweist sich die Ethnopoesie ab frei von den Konventionen anthropologischer Feldforschung und kann sich damit auf die ästhetischen Qualitäten des Textes, auf die literarische Form konzentrieren. Andererseits liegen die Vorzüge der Ethnographie, besonders in der Tradition Malinowskis, in der Verpflichtung gegenüber der Wahrheit der Fakten und der Präzision der Details. – Siehe auch; in dieser Nummer von Pandaemonium Germanicum, Willi Bolles komplementären Aufsatz über "Ethnopoesie und Ethnographie".

    People who learn Portuguese usually have difficulties in using two of the most frequent verbs of the Portuguese verbal system: ser and estar. Native speakers of German for example fail to easily identify the differences between these verbs, which are compared with the German verb sein. Our purpose is to describe these verbs, their meaning and function, and also to attempt to find criteria to help learners to identify the differences to use these verbs. Some of the differences can be explained by the speakers experiences and the context. Lerner des Portugiesischen als Fremdsprache haben oft Schwierigkeiten, die zwei häufig gebrauchten Verben des portugiesischen Verbalsystems ser und estar zu verwenden. Deutschsprachige erkennen kaum die Unterschiede zwischen diesen Verben, die im Deutschen oft mit dem Verb sein gleichgesetzt werden, das auch in ähnlichen Strukturen und Situationen vorkommt. In dieser Arbeit beschäftigen wir uns damit, diese Verben in ihrer Funktion und Bedeutung zu beschreiben und versuchen, Kriterien aufzustellen, die dem Lernenden helfen können, diese Unterschiede besser zu verstehen und dadurch die Verben besser anzuwenden. Einige Unterschiede können durch die Erfahrungen des Sprechers und durch den Kontext erklärt werden.

    For the learners of Portuguese and German as foreign languages the subjunctive mood represents a learning problem. Based on syntactic and pragmatic categories, the subjunctive is classified in a way that describes its use and permits the comparison between the Portuguese subjuntivo and the German Konjunktiv. Für Lernende des Portugiesischen bzw. des Deutschen als Fremdsprache stellt der Konjunktiv eine Lernschwierigkeit dar. Ausgehend von syntaktischen und pragmatischen Kategorien wird hier versucht, eine Klassifikation des Konjunktivs durchzuführen, die seinen Gebrauch beschreibt und einen Vergleich des portugiesischen subjuntivo mit dem deutschen Konjunktiv ermöglicht.

    This essay aimes to introduce the German-Jewish Poet Rose Ausländer (1901-1988) to the literary public of Brasil, where she has not been translated and is therefore nearly unknown. Proceeding from the translation of 12 paradigmatic poems, the crucial periods of her life, poetry and poetology are outlined: As her famous college Paul Celan, she was born in Czernovitch this multicultural town of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. An important number of her poems are the result of the intimate relation with her country. The early death of her father and the resulting poverty led her to try to find a new home in New York, but she came back in the period of beginning National Socialism and suffered the persecution of Holocaust. After long years of travelling, she settled down in a Düsseldorf home for elderly Jewish people. The central themes in her poetry are: the loss of country, the Holocaust, and survival in a kind of spiritual country, that is: language and writing. Der vorliegende Aufsatz verfolgt das Ziel, die (hierzulande weitgehend unbekannte, weil unübersetzte) deutsch-jüdische Dichterin Rose Ausländer (1901-1988) dem literaturinteressierten Publikum Brasiliens vorzustellen. Ausgehend von der Übersetzung von zwölf paradigmatischen Gedichten werden die entscheidenden Lebensstationen und Schaffensphasen der Dichterin, die wie Paul Celan im vielsprachigen Czernowitz der österreichisch-ungarischen Donaumonarchie aufwuchs, charakterisiert: Ihre tiefe Verbundenheit mit ihrer galizischen Heimat, ihr früher, vom Tod des Vaters und darauf folgender bitterer Armut erzwungener Versuch, in New York Fuß zu fassen; Rückkehr und Verfolgung in der NS-Zeit; ihre Reisejahre durch Europa auf der Suche nach neuen Wurzeln und schließlich – gezeichnet von Krankheit – ihre letzte Station im jüdischen Altenheim in Düsseldorf. Als zentrale Themen ihres vielfältigen Werks, das in Deutschland in acht Bänden zur Verfugung steht, dürfen gelten: Heimatverlust und -erinnerung, der Holocaust, das Leben in einer geistigen Heimat, dem "Mutterland Sprache".

    The reading of Arnold Hauser's work, in particular his book "Der Manierismus", written in 1964, that deals with Spanish literature, allows us to overcome the usual classifications found in manuals of this area based only on chronological data. Hauser calls "Mannerism" the crisis of the Renaissance, distinguishing it from European Baroque movements. Some of the Spanish authors and their works from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries respond to the characteristics of Mannerism, if one takes into account their perspectivism, the presence of paradox, their cerebral construction, the discovery of the modern reader, their autonomy as literary works, the overcoming of the classical genders, the use of dialog, etc, and can, therefore, be seen as the basis of the literary Modernity. A leitura da obra de Arnold Hauser, particularmente de seu livro "Der Manierismus", de 1964, ao voltar-se para a história da literatura espanhola, nos permitiu superar as habituais catalogações embasadas apenas na cronologia, que predominam nos manuais dessa especialidade. Hauser chama de "Maneirismo" a crise da Renascença e distingue esse movimento dos Barrocos europeus. Alguns autores e obras espanholas dos séculos XVI e XVII, graças ao seu perspectivismo, à presença do paradoxo, à sua construção cerebral, à descoberta do leitor moderno, à sua autonomia como obras literárias, à superação dos gêneros clássicos, ao uso do diálogo, etc., respondem às características desse Maneirismo e, assim sendo, podem ser lidas como fundamentos da Modernidade literária.

    This paper aims to study the literary genre tragedy and investigate how it can be truly identified in the works of two authors of the German Enlightenment and Classicism: G. E. Lessing and F. Schiller. In order to reach this goal, it is necessary first to step back to the Greek antiquity and study the origins of this type of text. Additionally, some titles by Shakespeare and Racine will be taken into consideration as further support of our claims. Este artigo tem como objetivo proceder a um breve levantamento do gênero tragédia e verificar até que ponto ele está realmente representado no Iluminismo e no Classicismo alemão dentro da obra de G. E. Lessing e de F. Schiller. Para tanto, é necessário recuarmos no tempo até a Antiguidade clássica e estudarmos os fundamentos desse tipo de texto. O exame de alguns títulos dos autores propostos será, antes, devidamente respaldado pela apreciação de dois estágios da história da tragédia: em Shakespeare e Racine. Absicht des Aufsatzes ist es, eine kurze Aufhebung der literarischen Gattung Tragödie auszuführen und nachzusehen, inwiefern sie in der deutschen Aufklärung und Klassik besonders in den Werken G. E. Die Untersuchung mancher Titel der erwähnten Dichter wird noch präziser durch die Miteinbeziehung der Werke Shakespeares und Racines in diesen Beitrag.

    This article results from a research carried out between April and June of 2010 in the Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros at the Universidade de São Paulo, in which a complete list of titles related to the German language and culture was collected from João Guimarães Rosa's personal library. Alongside a description of the procedures taken, we offer a comment on some of the most important aspects of the material analysed, including its recurrent themes and features, such as the marginalia found in volumes by authors like Nietzsche, Kafka and Erich Auerbach, as well as on the general context of Guimarães Rosa's German readings. ... O artigo resulta de pesquisa realizada entre os meses de abril e junho de 2010 no Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros (USP) e apresenta a listagem completa dos títulos pertencentes à biblioteca de João Guimarães Rosa que de algum modo se relacionam à língua e cultura alemãs.     This article presents a study of the short story "A hora e a vez de Augusto Matraga", by Guimarães Rosa, which investigates how the tragic appears in this literary work and how it might represent a redemption signal to the main character. The study is based on Nietzsche's concept of the tragedy, constituted by the fusion between two opposite impulses. They are related to Apollo and Dionysus' spirits that represent appearance and essence, respectively. Neste artigo é feito um estudo do conto "A hora e a vez de Augusto Matraga", de Guimarães Rosa, de modo a se observar como o trágico manifesta-se nessa obra e como ele pode representar um sinal de salvação para a personagem principal. Tal estudo está ancorado na concepção de trágico nietzschiana, segundo a qual a tragédia se constitui a partir da fusão de duas forças opostas, referentes aos espíritos de Apolo e Dioniso, representantes da aparência e da essência, respectivamente.

    This article discusses the influence of electric illumination on theatre and the so called expressionist film. It starts with a short historical overview and will then argue that the only film with a narrative as well as a visual design in expressionist tradition is From Morn to Midnight, based on a play written in 1912 by Georg Kaiser and released in same year (1920) as its legend counterpart The Cabinet of Caligari. But different then Caligari or many other famous German silent movies from the 1920s it is not located in a romantic shadow world, syntactically created by lightning effects, but renounces the dark and spooky irrational in favor of an urban environment in the early twentieth century: a story of money, erotic seduction, escapist fantasies, eccentric bohemian life, crime and rapid alteration of scenes.

    The reception of Franz Kafka’s work is normally seen from the perspective of human condition, the labyrinth, the bureaucracy that imposes itself over the individual and so on. There is no doubt about the importance of this perspective for the study of Kafka’s work. Nevertheless, the objective of the present paper is to point out another aspect in Kafka’s work, which is the relation to the visual medium Kaiserpanorama in his fictional writings. The starting points of this discussion are the books “Kafka goes to the movies” by Hanns Zischler published in 1996 and “Kafka und der Film: über kinematographisches Erzählen” by Peter-André Alt published in 2009. ...
