Our physical orientation in place is one of the defining characteristics of our embodied existence. However, while there is no human life, culture, or action without a specific location functioning as its setting, people go much further than this bare fact in attributing meaning and value to their physical environment. 'Landscape’ denotes this symbolic conception and use of terrain. It is a creation of human culture. In Valuing Landscape we explore different ways in which physical environments impacted on the cultural imagination of Greco-Roman Antiquity.     Der Begriff 'historisches Präsens' ist zu einem wenig differenzierten Sammelbegriff geworden, der syntaktisch und pragmatisch sehr unterschiedliche Präsenstypen umfasst. Die vorliegende Monographie Werk arbeitet die Unterscheidungen des historischen Präsens heraus: das aspektuelle, aoristische Präsens (oft 'episches Präsens') von der Antike bis ins Mittelalter, das perspektivische, vergangenheitsaktualisierende Präsens (das eigentliche 'historische Präsens'), das sich vor allem ab dem 16. Jahrhundert etabliert, und schließlich das narrative Präsens als durchgängiges Erzähltempus in Romanen des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts. Die intermedialen Einflüsse durch den Film begünstigen die Verbreitung und Etablierung des Präsens als neues, alternatives Erzähltempus im Roman. Anders als häufig angenommen, bewahrt es dabei durchaus seine Grundsemantik. Die Präsensverwendung in narrativen Texten wird am Beispiel des Portugiesischen, Spanischen, Französischen, Deutschen und Englischen besprochen mit einem Ausblick auf das Russische.

    Born in Khūy (Azerbaidjan), Mīrzā Muḥammad Ḥasan Zunūzī Khūʾī (1172-1225/1758-1810) was a traditional Islamic scholar and man of letters who signed his poems as ‘Fānī’. He received his basic education in Zunūz, Tabriz and Khūy, leaving for the holy cites of the Shīʿa in Iraq at the age of 23. There he attended the classes of, among others, Āqā Muḥammad Bāqir Bihbihānī (d. 1205/1790) and Mīrzā Muḥammad Mahdī Shahristānī (d. 1215-16/1800-01). He then returned to Khūy where he spent the rest of his life, save for a two-year ‘sabbatical’ in Mashhad. In Khūy Fānī was a protégé of the local ruler, Aḥmad Khān Dunbul (d. 1200/1785) and his son Ḥusayn Qulīkhān Dunbul (d. 1213/1799). He is the author of a number of works, among them the encyclopaedic Baḥr al-ʿulūm (Persian) and the spiritual Wasīlat al-najāh (Persian). The Persian poems published here are mostly mystical in tone, often inserting terms or concepts taken from astronomy

    As is well known, large parts of the Greek sciences were assimilated by the medieval Muslim world. Equally well known is the fact that quite a number of Muslim scholars contributed to the further development of some of these sciences and also, that some of their works were translated into Latin and other western languages, leaving their imprint on late medieval and early modern science in turn. For this reason, anyone interested in the history of science in the western world will be interested in reading about the history of science in Islam and vice versa. This is why the editor of the present collection of articles has done well to bring together contributions from both fields, in French, English, and Persian. While all of these articles are interesting in their own right, the section dedicated to Naṣīr al-Dīn Ṭūsī (d. 672/1274) and a study of Descartes’ (d. 1650) de Solidorum elementis deserve special mention

    When the founder of the Qajar dynasty of Iran, Āqā Muḥammad Khān Qājār (r. 1789-97), conquered the capital of Georgia Tiflis in 1795, two infant sons of the defeated king Heraclius II were captured. Of these, the eldest died on the way. The other, Khusraw Khān, the later Mīrzā Khusraw Bayg Gurjī (d. 1277/1860), was taken back to Tehran by the commander of the Persian forces, Ḥājjī Ibrāhīm, who treated him as if he were his own child, calling him Mīrzā. When Ḥājjī Ibrāhīm was executed in 1803 on the orders of Fatḥ ʿAlī Shāh (d. 1249/1834), Mīrzā Khusraw first lived with a family in Shiraz and then, in 1805, he was adopted by the childless Talpur ruler of Sind, Mīr Karam ʿAlī Khān (r. 1227-44/1812-28). It is there at the court in Hyderabad that he developed into a refined man of letters and where he compiled this poetical anthology, then only 27 years old

    Naṣīr al-Dīn Ṭūsī (d. 672/1274) was an influential philosopher, theologian, mathematician and astronomer, besides being the first director of the famous observatory at Marāghah near Tabriz as well as a man of politics. Author of a large number of scholarly works, he is especially famous for such treatises as his Tajrīd al-iʿtiqād on theology, the Zīj-i Īlkhānī on astronomy, the Ḥall mushkilāt al-Ishārāt , his influential commentary on Avicenna’s (428/1037) Kitāb al-ishārāt wal-tanbīhāt on philosophy and logic, and his Akhlāq-i Nāṣirī on ethics. The present work contains an edition of a compendium on Persian and Arabic metrics which Ṭūsī says he wrote at the request of some friends, probably at the time of his association with the Ismailis, before the Mongol invasion and the collapse of the Niẓārī state in 654/1256.     The Arab poet and anthologist Abū Tammām (d. 231/845) was born in Jāsim in Syria, between Damascus and Darʿā. After a first period as a weavers’ assistant in Damascus and as a water-seller in Cairo, studying poetry on the side, he had his breakthough as a poet after his return to Syria in the time of al-Muʿtaṣim billāh (r. 218-27/833-42). Considered as the greatest panegyrist of his time, he sang the praises of the caliph and many other public figures of his age. Besides Egypt, Abū Tammām also travelled to other regions, his most celebrated sojourn being in Hamadan where he compiled his famous poetic anthology the Kitāb al-ḥamāsa . The present work is a similar compilation by him, though smaller and much less known. Edited previously on the basis of one manuscript from Istanbul, the present facsimile edition is of a second manuscript, this time from Yazd. Some folios missing but good readings, interesting marginalia

    Non-literal language is ubiquitous in everyday life, and while hyperbole is a major part of this, it has so far remained relatively unexplored. This volume provides the first investigation of hyperbole in English, drawing on data from genres such as spoken conversation, TV, newspapers, and literary works from Chaucer to Monty Python. Combining quantitative and qualitative analyses, it uses approaches from semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis and classical rhetoric to investigate in detail both speaker-centered and emotive aspects of hyperbole, and also addressee-related aspects, such as interpretation and interactional uptake. Illustrated with a range of diachronic case studies, hyperbole is also shown to be a main means of linguistic creativity, and an important contributor to language change. The book concludes with an exploration of the role of hyperbole in political speaking, humour, and literature. Original and in-depth, it will be invaluable to all those working on meaning, discourse, and historical linguistics.

    Die „kleine deutsch-französische Literaturgeschichte“ vom 18. bis zum Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts überwindet und relativiert die nationalen Standpunkte, um gemeinsame Epochen und Thematiken zu erzählen: Aufklärung, Klassik/Classicisme, Romantik, Realismus, Naturalismus, Fin de Siècle/Jahrhundertwende, Avantgarden, Literatur des Ersten Weltkriegs. Sie ist der Versuch einer Pragmatik der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung, die auf der Grundlage von zwei benachbarten, zum Teil historisch verflochtenen Kulturräumen beruht, zwischen denen seit dem Mittelalter ein intensiver Austausch stattgefunden hat. Auch in Konflikt- und Krisenzeiten hat sich diese Tradition fortgesetzt. Jedes Kapitel skizziert eine gegenstandsbezogene Fragestellung, die unterschiedliche Gewichtungen zwischen den Prinzipien der histoire parallèle und der histoire comparée geltend macht. Im Vordergrund steht eine resolute komparatistische Perspektive, die sich einer gründlichen Auseinandersetzung mit der Geschichte deutsch-französischer Kulturtransfers, Wechselwirkungen, Vermittlungsprozesse und Berührungszonen widmet.
