For 150 years the French public and literati have enjoyed a love affair with crime fiction. This book investigates the nature of this relationship and how through periods of dramatic social and political change in France it has flourished. It challenges the conventional view of a popular genre feeding a niche market, depicting crime fiction instead as a field of creative endeavour, which has gradually matured into one of considerable literary fertility. By inviting us to share secrets and crack codes, creating suspense and (at times) not shirking from presenting horrific events in graphic language, the crime story brings into play the intellect and emotions of its readership. This book explores both this intrinsic literary value of the crime novel and its extrinsic witness to historical events and cultural trends, arguing that these apparently distinct aspects are in fact dynamic, interrelated parts of the same whole. This blend of cultural history with literary analysis allows for the discussion of themes such as politics, memory, the urban environment and youth cultures, mixed with case studies of major French crime writers, including Gaston Leroux, Georges Simenon, Jean-Patrick Manchette, Daniel Pennac and Fred Vargas

Voici enfin une somme critique consacrée aux multiples facettes de la relation entre Albert Camus et la scène de théâtre. Réunissant des exégètes camusiens aussi bien que des théâtrologues et des professionnels de la scène, elle embrasse une pluralité d’approches et de sensibilités. La première de ses quatre parties se concentre sur le répertoire dramatique de Camus : les pièces de son cru autant que ses adaptations scéniques de romans, ses traductions de pièces étrangères et les créations collectives. La seconde partie considère le praticien qui a expérimenté tous les métiers de la scène, et la veine théorique qu’il développe dans certains textes de réflexion. L’ensemble de cette première moitié du livre couvre ses nombreux accomplissements reliés au théâtre ; celui-ci apparaît dans toute sa polymorphie comme une sphère d’activité permanente sur le parcours camusien. La suite du livre examine la fortune scénique remarquable non seulement du corpus dramatique mais aussi de récits camusiens : d’abord en France (c’est l’objet de la troisième partie), puis à l’étranger (c’est l’objet de la quatrième et dernière partie). D’une façon inusitée, en se penchant sur la vie théâtrale contemporaine, elle met vigoureusement au jour l’actualité de l’œuvre fictive de Camus à l’échelle occidentale

While a great deal of postcolonial criticism has examined how the processes of hybridity, mestizaje, creolization, and syncretism impact African diasporic literature, Oakley employs the heuristic of the “commonplace” to recast our sense of the politics of such literature. Her analysis of commonplace poetics reveals that postcolonial poetic and political moods and aspirations are far more complex than has been admitted. African Atlantic writers summon the utopian potential of Romanticism, which had been stricken by Anglo-European exclusiveness and racial entitlement, and project it as an attainable, differentially common future. Putting poets Frankétienne (Haiti), Werewere Liking (Côte d’Ivoire), Derek Walcott (St Lucia), and Claudia Rankine (Jamaica) in dialogue with Romantic poets and theorists, as well as with the more recent thinkers Édouard Glissant, Walter Benjamin, and Emmanuel Levinas, Oakley shows how African Atlantic poets formally revive Romantic forms, ranging from the social utopian manifesto to the poète maudit , in their pursuit of a redemptive allegory of African Atlantic experiences. Common Places addresses issues in African and Caribbean literary studies, Romanticism, poetics, rhetorical theory, comparative literature, and translation theory, and further, models a postcolonial critique in the aesthetic-ethical and “new aestheticist” vein

    The Haitian Revolution has generated responses from commentators in fields ranging from philosophy to historiography to twentieth-century literary and artistic studies. But what about the written work produced at the time, by Haitians? This book is the first to present an account of a specifically Haitian literary tradition in the Revolutionary era. Beyond the Slave Narrative shows the emergence of two strands of textual innovation, both evolving from the new revolutionary consciousness: the remarkable political texts produced by Haitian revolutionary leaders Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines, and popular Creole poetry from anonymous courtesans in Saint-Domingue's libertine culture. These textual forms, though they differ from each other, both demonstrate the increasing cultural autonomy and literary voice of non-white populations in the colony at the time of revolution. Unschooled generals and courtesans, long presented as voiceless, are at last revealed to be legitimate speakers and authors.These Haitian French and Creole texts have been neglected as a foundation of Afro-diasporic literature by former slaves in the Atlantic world for two reasons: because they do not fit the generic criteria of the slave narrative (which is rooted in the autobiographical experience of enslavement); and because they are mediated texts, relayed to the print-cultural Atlantic domain not by the speakers themselves, but by secretaries or refugee colonists.     Vassilis Alexakis: Exorciser l'exil est le premier ouvrage critique consacré à l'œuvre littéraire de l'auteur grec d'expression française Vassilis Alexakis, lauréat du prix Médicis en 1995 et du Grand prix du roman de l'Académie française en 2007. Les schémas de dépossessions culturelles, de quêtes linguistiques, de crises identitaires et de déplacements géographiques propres aux écrits d'Alexakis y sont analysés selon trois axes (autofictionnel, linguistique et spatial) dans les œuvres publiées entre 1974 et 2007 afin de révéler une esthétique du déplacement qui permet à l'auteur de se libérer progressivement de la problématique de l'exil. Cette étude critique s'adresse particulièrement à ceux qui s'intéressent aux écrits contemporains en langue française, aux études littéraires francophones, au bilinguisme littéraire ou à l'autotraduction.     Quoi dire, mal dire, ouïr, mal entendre, en-deçà du langage, à l'écoute d'un manque, mèr(e) morte ou « souffle-esprit » ? Dans et hors de la langue, triviale ou spirituelle, aimée ou haïe, anglaise ou française, exil ou patrie... Le travail de Beckett, dans ses pièces théâtrales, télévisuelles et radiophoniques, est le travail d'un poète sur la matière des mots, dénudés de leurs sens par trop utilisés, travail musical et rythmique, d'une exigence qui dépasse la frontière des langues dans leur labilité. Le théâtre beckettien donne à écouter une présence (peut-être celle du « mot perdu »), la présence d'une absence qui n'en finirait plus... Ainsi le néologisme de « spirivial » - qui provient (tout comme son dérivé, la « spirivialité ») de la jonction (ou bien encore du va-et-vient) entre le mot « trivial » et le mot « spirituel » - permet-il de désigner le passage ou bien encore l'anamorphose au cœur du processus de destruction-reconstruction, propre au langage beckettien. Il peut s'agir, par extension, du « lieu-non-lieu » de la Question ou du mystère qui palpite au centre d'un mouvement paradoxal-spiroïdal, involutif-évolutif, à la fois creuset et matrice de la « matière-idée ».

    For 150 years the French public and literati have enjoyed a love affair with crime fiction. This book investigates the nature of this relationship and how through periods of dramatic social and political change in France it has flourished. It challenges the conventional view of a popular genre feeding a niche market, depicting crime fiction instead as a field of creative endeavour, which has gradually matured into one of considerable literary fertility. By inviting us to share secrets and crack codes, creating suspense and (at times) not shirking from presenting horrific events in graphic language, the crime story brings into play the intellect and emotions of its readership. This book explores both this intrinsic literary value of the crime novel and its extrinsic witness to historical events and cultural trends, arguing that these apparently distinct aspects are in fact dynamic, interrelated parts of the same whole. This blend of cultural history with literary analysis allows for the discussion of themes such as politics, memory, the urban environment and youth cultures, mixed with case studies of major French crime writers, including Gaston Leroux, Georges Simenon, Jean-Patrick Manchette, Daniel Pennac and Fred Vargas.

    Michon lu et relu : ce titre, en écho au Balzac lu et relu d'Albert Béguin, prend acte du fait qu'aujourd'hui, Pierre Michon est un « classique ». Un classique se reconnaît d'abord à cette évidence que l'on a affaire le lisant non seulement à une parole singulière, mais plus encore à une puissance d'énonciation qui s'impose absolument, nécessairement. Avant, il n'y a rien (ou le journal du matin) ; puis on lit : et dans l'énergie imparable des phrases qui se découvrent, un fiat s'affirme, fondateur d'une langue et d'un monde... Puis s'ajoute le consensus critique. Le désir de commenter Michon, depuis les études fondatrices de Jean-Pierre Richard, n'a pas connu de cesse : on verra qu'il poursuit dans ce volume sa carrière, au confluent nourricier de l'érudition et de l'admiration.

    Die Entstehung der Avantgarden zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts ist eng mit der Entwicklung der Metropolen Europas und Nordamerikas verknüpft. Paris, Berlin, München, Wien, Zürich, London, Moskau, St. Petersburg und New York - um nur diejenigen zu nennen, die man am ehesten mit avantgardistischen Bewegungen in Verbindung bringt - werden zu wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Zentren, in denen avantgardistische Gruppierungen sich formieren und agieren. Der zweisprachige Band macht sich zum Ziel, die avantgardistischen Metropolen in den ersten Jahrzehnten des 20. Jahrhunderts aus verschiedenen Perspektiven und in unterschiedlichen kulturellen Kontexten in den Blick zu nehmen. Dabei zeigt sich, dass in der Kulturgeschichte der Avantgarden nicht nur die reale Metropole eine eminente Rolle spielt, sondern auch, ja vor allem die mit Idealen und Ideologien aufgeladene imaginierte Metropole, die symbolisch sowohl für Aufbruch wie für Untergang einzustehen hat. La genèse des avant-gardes du début du XXe siècle est liée de façon inextricable au développement des métropoles d'Europe et de l'Amérique du Nord. En effet, les grandes villes telles que Paris, Berlin, Munich, Vienne, Zurich, Londres, Moscou, Saint-Pétersbourg ou New York - pour ne mentionner que celles que l'on associe le plus fréquemment aux avant-gardes - sont autant de centres économiques, sociaux et culturels où les avant-gardes se forment et agissent. Ce volume bilingue se propose d'étudier les métropoles des avant-gardes dans les premières décennies du XXe siècle sous des angles divers et par rapport à des contextes culturels particuliers à chaque pays.
