The volume contains a collection of 29 articles from the last years of Walter Haug's life, in particular theoretical literary and historical philosophical studies on the courtly romance and on mysticism, which are drawn closely together from the aspect of negativity. In addition, it includes texts on the heroic epic, Märendichtung (medieval fables) and many others, and through six speeches and tributes affords a very personal insight into Walter Haug as a scholar and as a man.

Jahrhunderts entsteht, herausgearbeitet. Im Hauptteil widmet sich die Arbeit der Einzeluntersuchung von autobiographischen Texten von Jakob Wassermann, Werner Kraft, Gershom Scholem, Max Fürst, Ernst Toller, Ludwig Greve, Ruth Klüger und Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt. The study is concerned with research into 20th century Jewish autobiography written in German. After an overview illuminating the tradition of autobiographical writing in the 19th and 20th centuries, the study develops the specific conditions of Jewish autobiography, which has been in existence since the end of the 18th century. The main section of the work is given over to individual studies of autobiographical texts by Jakob Wassermann, Werner Kraft, Gershom Scholem, Max Fürst, Ernst Toller, Ludwig Greve, Ruth Klüger and Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt.

Designed for both students and general readers, this introduction to Renaissance and Reformation literature offers a description of early modern habits of writing and reading, of publication and stage performance. It considers the ways in which early modern writers constructed the past and designed the present, wrote about people and places, recovered and adapted classical genres, and tackled religious and secular controversies. All these topics are illustrated with a profusion of excerpts from early modern texts, including works by More, Erasmus, Wyatt, Spenser, Philip and Mary Sidney, Marlowe, Kyd, Shakespeare, Campion, Daniel, Donne, Southwell, Dekker, Taylor 'the water-poet', Aemilia Lanyer, Jonson, Chapman, Middleton, Mary Wroth, Ralegh, Greville, Wotton, Herbert and Milton. Throughout, readers are reminded that the consequences of the English reformations were as important as the better known influences of the Renaissance Introduction : new worlds of words -- Speaking and writing -- Reading, publication, performance -- Forms ancient and modern -- Defining the past -- Designing the present -- Fictive persons and places -- Godliness.

Daniel R. Schwarz has studied and taught the modern British novel for decades and now brings his impressive erudition and critical acuity to bear in this insightful study of the major authors and novels of the first half of the twentieth century. After a compelling introduction outlining his method and a substantial first chapter establishing the intellectual, cultural and literary contexts in which the modern British novel was produced, Schwarz turns to close reading of modernist masterworks. He shows how Hardy's Jude the Obscure, Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim, Lawrence's Sons and Lovers and The Rainbow, Joyce's Dubliners and Ulysses, Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse and Forster's A Passage to India form essential components in a modernist cultural tradition which includes the visual arts. Without lapsing into jargon, Schwarz's work takes account of recent developments in theory and cultural studies. His persuasive study will not only be invaluable to students and teachers, but will also be of interest to the general reader

This Blackwell Guide provides a broad-ranging introduction to ancient Greek drama, which flourished principally in Athens from the sixth to the third century bc. All three genres of Greek drama are discussed - tragedy, comedy, and satyr play - as well as the five surviving playwrights - Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, and Menander, together with brief entries on lost playwrights. The Guide also addresses contextual issues, such as: the origins of the dramatic art forms; the conventions of the festivals, the theater, and the performers; the relationship between drama and the worship of Dionysos; the political dimension; and how to read and watch Greek drama. The final section consists of 46 one-page synopses of each of the surviving plays
