Surviving school as a fat kid is tough enough. When your Mum's a teacher, it's hell. What's more, Anna's Dad is obsessed with saving the world and her maverick uncle Terry is dossing on the couch. When Anna hits back at the bullies, she is suspended from school and stuck at home with hapless Terry trying to save her. But Terry needs saving himself and, as the bond between the two deepens, Anna is swept up in a friendship she can't live without. 'If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet' premiered at the Bush Theatre, London, in October 2009.

In the oppressive heat of Midsummer's Eve, Julie, daughter of the lord, is drawn into a dangerous tryst with her father's butler. As the night wears on, the couple, from opposite ends of the social spectrum, dance, flirt and fight towards an explosive conclusion that will shake the existing order to its core. Zinnie Harris's new version of Strindberg's 19th-century masterpiece, 'Miss Julie', relocates the play to central Scotland between the wars.

'Katrina' uses survivor testimonies and the rich cultural tradition of New Orleans to tell the story of the eponymous hurricane and its immediate aftermath, charting the infamous devastation that will live long in the American psyche. The plot follows from the death of Virgil, a decadent old New Orleanian, who has been killed by Hurricane Katrina. Trapped by the rising floodwater his partner Beatrice determines to take his body to safety at the City Hall. During her journey she encounters a number of other survivors and hears their stories. 'Katrina' was first performed in 2009 at The Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf.

Schiller's masterpiece hinges on a brilliantly imagined meeting between Mary, Queen of Scots - focus of simmering Catholic dissent and her cousin Elizabeth, Queen of England, who has imprisoned her. Isolated by their duplicitous male courtiers, the women collide headlong, each wrestling with the rank, ambition and destiny their births have bestowed, against a thrilling background of intrigue, plot and counter-plot. David Harrower's version of Mary Stuart premiered at the Citizen's Theatre, Glasgow, in October 2006.

Schiller's 'Mary Stuart' is a grand historical drama telling the story of the personal struggle between two extraordinary women - one French, one English - both captive to the demands of sovereignty and both caught in a tumult of political and religious intrigue. Which of them is the rightful Queen of England: Mary Stuart or Elizabeth Tudor? Intertwined with this rivalry is a vicious struggle between Lord Burghley and the Earl of Leicester, both of whom feel a loyalty to their queen, while Leicester also harbours a secret passion for Mary. Mike Poulton's translation was written for a production that premiered at Clwyd Theatr Cymru in May 2009.

Written in a fortnight and often regarded as Strindberg's masterpiece, the play's première at Strindberg's experimental theatre in Denmark in 1889 was banned by the censor and its first public production three years later in Berlin aroused such protests that it was withdrawn after one performance. This translation by Michael Meyer was first performed in 1965 by the National Theatre at the Chichester Festival.

After six lonely weeks with nobody but her disabled boy for company, Rita Affleck, wealthy, beautiful and consumed by jealous love, welcomes home her husband Alfred. But, far from the passionate reunion she so craves, there is only torment as Alfred's possessive half-sister arrives, and he announces his great revelation. Taking Ibsen's 'Little Eyolf' as the inspiration for a passionate and tragic tale of obsessive love, set in 1950s England, Samuel Adamson's 'Mrs Affleck' opened at the National Theatre, London, in January 2009.

A play about fathers, sons and football, 'Billy Wonderful', first staged at the Liverpool Everyman in 2009, is a fast-paced coming-of-age play pulsing with all the excitement and physicality of match-day. As one-time boy wonder Billy Walters relives his debut in a Merseyside derby at the age of nineteen, ninety minutes cut across twenty-two years and fellow players become family and friends, enemies and lovers. Both Billy and the play are consumed by football: match commentators hover over his life, and fans shout their chants over the scenes. Billy flickers between an eager and hopeful child, self-satisfied young man convinced he is at the top of his game, and a slightly older but disillusioned drifter, desperate not to miss out on his dream and end up like his father. Billy Wonderful is a captivating story of fame and fortune, disappointment and family.

Shinn's uneasy play, premiered at the Royal Court in 2006, asks what happens when people and events apparently thousands of miles away affect the heart and soul of a city. Sparse, cruel and transfixing, 'Dying City' is a crisp dissection of the impact on society of the war in Iraq. Craig is a Harvard graduate student, who gives up his dissertation on Faulkner for military service. The play sways between the past, on Craig's last night at home with his wife Kelly before he goes to fight in Iraq, and the present, when the widowed Kelly receives a visit from his twin brother Peter. Kelly is a therapist and Peter, an actor who has just walked out on the second half of his play, wants to talk about their mutual loss. Dying City slowly exposes the tensions strung between these relationships, pierced and overshadowed by the enormities of the war in Iraq and 9/11.

A bizarre series of sketches inspired by Victorian travelling shows, 'Edward Gant's Amazing Feats of Loneliness' is a curious miscellany of tricks, jokes and melancholy. In 1881, the famed and enigmatic impresario Mr Edward Gant presented his renowned travelling show for the final time: a spectacle of grotesquery, tastelessness, black comedy, mystery and magic realism presided over by an opiate-addicted actor. Neilson has reconstructed this intriguing and fantastic historical event, offering a strange and beautiful exploration of sadness and mortality and probing the nature of theatre and spectacle. With a cast that includes a girl whose face sprouts pearls and a teddy bear desperate for an imaginary cup of tea, it is a theatrical piece combining the melodrama, extravagance and painful loneliness that characterised a Victorian freak show. It was first performed in 2002 at The Theatre Royal, Plymouth.

Inside the room the blind, impervious Hamm sits in a wheelchair while his lame servant, Clov, scuttles about obeying his orders. Each depends fractiously on the other: Hamm alone knows the combination of the larder while Clov is his master's eyes and last remnant of human contact. The only other survivors are Hamm's legless parents, Nagg and Nell, who squat in dustbins upstage and die during the play.

Molly Davies's keen-edged and sparse debut play, premiered at the Royal Court in 2009, is about wanting a better life. Nineteen-year-old Amy, who works in a chicken nuggets factory, is a reluctant single mother, and her baby daughter is looked after by Amy's mother most of the time. When her old school friend Gary comes back from the army on leave, they have sex and do drugs and Amy begins to hope that with her new boyfriend and the shining promise of a trip to Brighton she can rise out of the life she feels trapped by. But flashes of violence and self-loathing show us frustrated hopes and very real characters. This important play is set in Norfolk, in a depressed and struggling agricultural community, a reminder that social deprivation is not just an inner city problem.

Father David Anderton is assigned to a crippled Scottish town on the Ayrshire coast, where sectarianism is rife. He is a cultivated - if naive and unworldly - man, ill-suited to his new parish. Drifting from his peers, he is drawn to Mark and Lisa, a feral teenage couple who attend the nearby school. Their untamed nights of booze and drugs are as exotic and entrancing to him as his solitary and cloistered life is to them. But, as events take a perilous direction, this combustible liaison will leave Father David's world in pieces. Adapted for the stage by Ian McDiarmid from the Booker Prize nominated novel by Andrew O'Hagan, 'Be Near Me' premiered in a co-production between the National Theatre of Scotland and the Donmar Warehouse in January 2009.
