This research, the result of collaboration between teachers and researchers of the Educational Science and Engineering Faculties of the University of Florence, focuses on certain theoretical concepts and reference apparatus, bringing international literature to bear on the specific case of Italy.     The work addresses the subject of the contemporary urban park, interpreted as an ethical and aesthetic space. Ethical in the proper sense of the word, that is conforming to the character of the place, and aesthetic in the sense of an urban space subject to qualitative valuations and the ambit of production of aesthetic experience in a real environment animated by the presence of nature. Tracing a critical itinerary through the history of the art of parks and gardens and the current trends of landscape architecture in Europe, the book sustains the theory that the ethics of creating parks always implies a meditation on aesthetic principles and values. The variety of current production is read through several original keys to interpretation: an historic overview of the ethical and aesthetic models, the identification of species of parks and the definition of ethical/aesthetic categories. The final section proposes a modus operandi that adopts the narrative dimension as a guideline for design. Published in the volume is the doctoral thesis that received the Grinzane Cavour – Giardini Hanbury special prize in 2006. L'opera affronta il tema del progetto contemporaneo di parco urbano, interpretato come spazio etico ed estetico. Etico, nel senso proprio dell'etimo, cioè conforme al luogo, ed estetico, come spazio urbano soggetto a valutazioni qualitative e ambito di produzione di esperienza estetica in un ambiente reale animato dalla presenza della natura. Tracciando un percorso critico attraverso la storia dell'arte dei giardini e dei parchi e gli orientamenti attuali dell'architettura del paesaggio in Europa, si sostiene la tesi che l'etica del fare parchi implica sempre e comunque una riflessione su principi e valori estetici. La varietas della produzione attuale viene letta attraverso alcune originali chiavi di lettura: un quadro storico dei modelli etici ed estetici, la individuazione di specie di parchi, la definizione di categorie etiche/estetiche. La parte conclusiva propone un modus operandi che assume la dimensione narrativa come indirizzo progettuale. Il volume pubblica la tesi di dottorato che ha ricevuto il Premio speciale Grinzane Cavour – Giardini Hanbury nel 2006.

    "The West has always been a resource for the Finns. Scholars, artists and other professionals have sought contacts from Europe throughout the centuries. The Finnish experience in Western Europe and the New World is a story of migrant laborers, expatriates and specialists working abroad. But you don’t have to be born in Finland to be a Finn. The experiences of second-generation Finnish immigrants and their descendants open up new possibilities for understanding the relationship between Finland and the West.

    The Finnish passage westward has not always crossed national borders. Karelian evacuees headed west, as did young people from the Finnish countryside when opportunities to make a living in agriculture and forestry diminished in the post-war era. The legacy of these migrants is still visible in the suburbs of Finnish cities today.

    This book is a joint effort of the Department of Ethnology and the Department of History at the University of Helsinki. It was written by Ph. D. students supervised by Academy Research Fellows Maria Lähteenmäki and Hanna Snellman, in collaboration with colleagues abroad interested in current research in ethnology and history.

    Examining the relationship between German poetry, philosophy, and visual media around 1900, Carsten Strathausen argues that the poetic works of Rainer Maria Rilke, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Stefan George focused on the visible gestalt of language as a means of competing aesthetically with the increasing popularity and "reality effect" of photography and film. Poetry around 1900 self-reflectively celebrated its own words as both transparent signs and material objects, Strathausen says. In Aestheticism, this means that language harbors the potential to literally present the things it signifies. Rather than simply describing or picturing the physical experience of looking, as critics have commonly maintained, modernist poetry claims to enable a more profound kind of perception that grants intuitive insights into the very texture of the natural world.

    Incorporating a rich series of case-studies covering a range of geographical areas, this collection of essays examines the history of modern intellectuals in the Islamic world throughout the twentieth century. The contributors reassess the typology and history of various scholars, providing significant diachronic analysis of the different forms of communication, learning, and authority. While each chapter presents a separate regional case, with an historically and geographically different background, the volume discloses commonalities, similarities and intellectual echoes through its comparative approach. Consisting of two parts, the volume focuses first on al-Manar, the influential journal published between 1898 and 1935 that inspired much imagination and arguments among local intelligentsias all over the Islamic world. The second part discusses the formation, transmission and transformation of learning and authority, from the Middle East to Central and Southeast Asia. Constituting a milestone in comparative studies of the modern Islamic world, this book highlights the range of and transformation in the role of intellectuals in Islamic societies.

    The book contains the vocabulary of the main liturgical texts of the Byzantine rite, d. H. Hesperinos, the Orthros, the liturgies and the Gospels; the remaining Old and New Testament writings are taken into account, as far as they are used on Sundays and higher festivals. This "basic vocabulary" should now make it possible to easily translate such texts in modern (Russian) church Slavic spelling. The dictionary, a vastly expanded edition of the previous edition, which has been out of print for years, seeks to make linguistic and theological knowledge useful for practical needs: it helps the Slavic student and those interested in the Eastern Church as well as the icon-lover or art historian without Russian or Serbian knowledge, biblical and to understand liturgical texts in the form of Modern Russian-Church Slavonic. Of benefit are the grammatical and orthographic references in the introduction, the references of certain forms of inflection to the initial forms in the dictionary and the appendix with abbreviations in manuscripts and prints as well as icons. Another directory contains person and place names from the biblical books, the saints' calendar, and the secular history found in liturgical texts and icons, with orthographic variants or misspellings with a reference to the standard forms. Das Buch enthält den Wortschatz der wichtigsten liturgischen Texte des byzantinischen Ritus, d. h. des Hesperinos, des Orthros, der Liturgien und der Evangelien; die übrigen alt- und neutestamentlichen Schriften sind berücksichtigt, soweit sie an Sonntagen und höheren Festen benutzt werden. Dieser "Grundwortschatz" soll es nun ermöglichen, solche Texte in der modern- (russisch-) kirchenslavischen Schreibweise leicht zu übersetzen. Das Wörterbuch, eine erheblich erweiterte Ausgabe der früheren, seit Jahren vergriffenen Auflagen, will sprachwissenschaftliches und theologisches Wissen praktischen Bedürfnissen dienstbar machen: es hilft dem Slavistik-Studenten und dem ostkirchlich Interessierten wie auch dem Ikonenliebhaber bzw. Kunsthistoriker ohne Russisch- bzw. Serbischkenntnisse, biblische und liturgische Texte in der Form des Modernen Russisch-Kirchenslavischen zu verstehen. Von Nutzen sind dabei die grammatischen und orthographischen Hinweise in der Einleitung, die Verweise von bestimmten Flexionsformen auf die Ausgangsformen im Wörterverzeichnis und der Anhang mit Abkürzungen in Handschriften und Drucken sowie auf Ikonen. Ein weiteres Verzeichnis enthält Personen- und Ortsnamen aus den biblischen Büchern, dem Heiligenkalender und der profanen Geschichte, die in liturgischen Texten und auf Ikonen zu finden sind, wobei orthographische Varianten bzw. Fehlschreibungen mit einem Verweis auf die Standardformen aufgeführt sind.

    The Russian-German dictionary by Pawlowsky, which first appeared in Riga in 1859, is a little-noticed in Slavic jewel so far. This is astonishing precisely because it is an indispensable tool in reading the Russian classics, its bilingualism is authentic and quite reliable down to scientific nomenclature and also not only records but also explains a great deal of idiomatic and probiotic. The aim of this work is to contribute to the history of Russian-German lexicography through a metalexographic single analysis of this work. The centuries-old disinterest in the results of lexicographical work also explains that Ivan Pawlowsky's Russian-German dictionary, to this day, must be considered terra incognita. Secondary: Pavlovsky's Russian-German dictionary. Das russisch-deutsche Wörterbuch von Pawlowsky, das erstmals 1859 in Riga erschien, ist ein in der Slavistik bisher wenig beachtetes Juwel. Dies ist gerade deshalb erstaunlich, weil es ein unentbehrliches Hilfsmittel bei der Lektüre der russischen Klassiker darstellt, seine Bilinguität authentisch und bis in die naturwissenschaftliche Nomenklatur hinein recht zuverlässig ist und außerdem eine ganze Menge von Idiomatischem und Proverbialem nicht nur verzeichnet, sondern auch erklärt. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, durch eine metalexikographische Einzelanalyse dieses Werks einen Beitrag zur Geschichte der russisch-deutschen Lexikographie zu leisten. Das jahrhundertealte Desinteresse an den Resultaten lexikographischer Arbeiten erklärt auch, daß das russisch-deutsche Wörterbuch von Iwan Pawlowsky, bis zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt als terra incognita betrachtet werden muß.     Krystian Lupa (* 1943), to whom this work is dedicated, is a theater director who enjoys the status of a "master" in Poland at the latest since the beginning of the 1990s. He has a reputation for lasting influence on Polish theater. This monograph presents the theatrical work of the Polish director Krystian Lupa for the first time comprehensively to the German speaking public. Starting from Lupas biography, an overview of his previous work and his narrative dramaturgy on individual staging analyzes to the detailed analysis of the staging cycle after Broch's "The Sleepwalkers" Lupas artistic manifesto, in the theater "want to explore new myths" discussed. The depiction of Lupa's theatrical concept is considered in the context of a mythology between martyrology and messianism, which has shaped the Polish cultural paradigm for many years, but is now in transition. Lupa's theater functions as a "metaphysical experience". Nevertheless, it seeks and investigates human cognition, which is why it is called "cognitive psychological theater". As an "interruption of the political," it comes up with a sense design that is put to the test and deliberately unchanged. Lupa integrates radical self-knowledge into a fragmentary totality that remains so human that man is not degraded in it, but rises. Krystian Lupa (*1943), dem diese Arbeit gewidmet ist, ist ein Theaterregisseur, der in Polen spätestens seit Beginn der 1990er Jahre den Status eines "Meisters" genießt. Er steht in dem Ruf, das polnische Theater nachhaltig zu prägen. Diese Monographie stellt die Theaterarbeit des polnischen Regisseurs Krystian Lupa erstmals in umfassender Form dem deutschsprachigen Publikum vor. Ausgehend von Lupas Biographie, einem Überblick über sein bisheriges Schaffen und seine narrative Dramaturgie über einzelne Inszenierungsanalysen bis hin zur Detailanalyse des Inszenierungszyklus nach Brochs "Die Schlafwandler" wird Lupas künstlerisches Manifest, im Theater "neue Mythen" erforschen zu wollen, diskutiert. Die Darstellung von Lupas Theaterkonzept wird im Kontext einer Mythologie zwischen Martyrologie und Messianismus betrachtet, die das polnische kulturelle Paradigma lange Jahre geprägt hat, heute jedoch im Umbruch begriffen ist. Lupas Theater funktioniert als "metaphysisches Erlebnis". Es sucht und untersucht gleichwohl menschliche Erkenntnis, weshalb es "erkenntnispsychologisches Theater" genannt wird. Als "Unterbrechung des Politischen" wartet es mit einem Sinnentwurf auf, der auf die Probe gestellt und bewußt unverändert bleibt. Lupa integriert radikale Selbsterkenntnis in eine fragmentarische Totalität, die so menschlich bleibt, daß der Mensch in ihr nicht erniedrigt wird, sondern sich erhebt.

    Ivan Bunin's high opinion of his narrative "Temnye allei" (Paris, 1946) was rarely shared. In the field of view of the readers was too often the erotic topic - the criticism affected an unbiased reception of the book, whose coherence was only occasionally perceived. Abridged editions reinforced this effect in the episode. The study considers the "Temnye allei" for the first time in the interaction of external conditions and artistic intention, taking into account all simultaneously created, partly unpublished tales. The focus is on determining the genre of the book on the basis of extra and intratextlichen links such as structure, style and the central themes of love, death and memory. While a glance at the eventful history of its origins allows conclusions to be drawn about the book's intended construction, the critical examination of the history of editions and receptions illuminates the most diverse problems of acceptance in the perception of the book as a short prose link - and as Bunin's masterpiece. Ivan Bunins hohe Meinung von seinem Erzählband "Temnye allei" (Paris, 1946) wurde nur selten geteilt. Im Blickfeld der Leser stand allzu häufig die erotische Thematik - die diesbezügliche Kritik beeinträchtigte eine unvoreingenommene Rezeption des Buches, dessen Kohärenz nur vereinzelt wahrgenommen wurde. Gekürzte Editionen verstärkten in der Folge diesen Effekt. Die Studie betrachtet die "Temnye allei" erstmals im Wirkungsgeflecht äußerer Bedingungen und künstlerischer Intention, unter Berücksichtigung aller zeitgleich entstandenen, teilweise bis heute unveröffentlichten Erzählungen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Bestimmung der Genrezugehörigkeit des Buches auf Basis der extra- und intratextlichen Verknüpfungen wie Struktur, Stil und der zentralen Themenkreise Liebe, Tod und Erinnerung. Während ein Blick auf die bewegte Entstehungsgeschichte Rückschlüsse auf die geplante Anlage des Buches erlaubt, erhellt die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der Editions- und Rezeptionsgeschichte die unterschiedlichsten Akzeptanzprobleme bei der Wahrnehmung des Buches als Kurzprosaverknüpfung - und als Meisterwerk Bunins.
