    This paper studies one of the earliest forms of modern consumer culture—the road book—in relation to one of the early utopias of modern consumption—California. Criticism has traditionally treated the road book as an extension of a loosely defined transcendentalist project, where drivers take to the open road to “discover” themselves in nature. The determinate context, however, is corporate rather than literary-historical. The earliest road books were advertisements. Their itineraries linked up with other spatial technologies (e.g. the conveyor belts in automobile plants and modern highways), transforming space into a vast production and distribution network. Production and distribution intersected in California, the state with the most automobiles per capita and the destination of most early road trips. The first section of the paper considers the journey to California from the perspective of Emily Post, who would later become a famous writer on etiquette. Post’s book is the narrative equivalent to the standardized roadside architecture, converting local difference into a tourist attraction, and local (especially ethnic) identity into a commodity. The next section considers the effects of commercial homogenization on gender, focusing on the moment when some women, taking the steering wheel, assumed agency as consumers. The primary texts here are some of the early novels of Sinclair Lewis, along with examples of sociology and advertising copy from the 1920s and 1930s. The final section analyzes the WPA Guidebook to California as a federal attempt to re-map corporate space—the space of tourist attractions and consumers—according to a progressive ideal.     The Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN) was designed in order to assess narrative skills in children who acquire one or more languages from birth or from early age. MAIN is suitable for children from 3 to 10 years and evaluates both comprehension and production of narratives. Its design allows for the assessment of several languages in the same child, as well as for different elicitation modes: Model Story, Retelling, and Telling. MAIN contains four parallel stories, each with a carefully designed six-picture sequence. The stories are controlled for cognitive and linguistic complexity, parallelism in macrostructure and microstructure, as well as for cultural appropriateness and robustness. The instrument has been developed on the basis of extensive piloting with more than 550 monolingual and bilingual children aged 3 to 10, for 15 different languages and language combinations. Even though MAIN has not been norm-referenced yet, its standardized procedures can be used for evaluation, intervention and research purposes. MAIN is currently available in the following languages: English, Afrikaans, Albanian, Basque, Bulgarian, Croatian, Cypriot Greek, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Icelandic, Italian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Standard Arabic, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, and Welsh.

When the writer met the then eighteen year old girl in Venice in 1948 he was nearly 50 years old, depressed and in a creative crisis. Since 1940 he had not published anything serious. The platonic love story renewed his spirits. He overcame his writers block. The relationsship inspired the novel "Across the River and into the Trees" and to a lesser degree "The Old Man and the Sea". For five years the affair dominated Hemingway's emotional life, culminating in Adriana's several months long stay on his finca in Cuba. The essay follows the influence Adriana had on his writings and his personal life. Both Ernest and Adriana were left with a lasting mark. Adriana could never free herself of the father figure that overshadowed her life. Both the author and his muse ended in suicide. ; Not Reviewed

    The nineteenth century in Britain saw tumultuous changes that reshaped the fabric of society and altered the course of modernization. It also saw the rise of the novel to the height of its cultural power as the most important literary form of the period. This paper reports on a long-term experiment in tracing such macroscopic changes in the novel during this crucial period. Specifically, we present findings on two interrelated transformations in novelistic language that reveal a systemic concretization in language and fundamental change in the social spaces of the novel. We show how these shifts have consequences for setting, characterization, and narration as well as implications for the responsiveness of the novel to the dramatic changes in British society. This paper has a second strand as well. This project was simultaneously an experiment in developing quantitative and computational methods for tracing changes in literary language. We wanted to see how far quantifiable features such as word usage could be pushed toward the investigation of literary history. Could we leverage quantitative methods in ways that respect the nuance and complexity we value in the humanities? To this end, we present a second set of results, the techniques and methodological lessons gained in the course of designing and running this project.

    Der vorliegende Projektbericht dokumentiert den Zwischenstand der Beschaffung und Bearbeitung von Texten und Daten für das Projekt "GeoBib - Georeferenzierte Online-Bibliographie früher Holocaust- und Lagerliteratur". Die zu beschaffenden Materialien und zu recherchierenden Daten umfassen dabei die benötigten Texte der Holocaust- und Lagerliteratur, deren zugehörige Autor(in)biographien sowie Werk- und Rezeptionsgeschichte. Die Bearbeitung erfolgt in Form von Annotationen zu den Texten. Der Bericht dokumentiert den Stand der Beschaffung und Bearbeitung des Materials zum Ende des ersten Projektjahres. Das Dokument ist Teil der Schriftenreihe „GeoBib Dokumentation“, welche die im Laufe des Projekts "GeoBib" entstehenden internen Reports umfasst und somit die fortlaufenden Projektarbeiten dokumentiert. Ziel des Projekts GeoBib ist es, die frühen Texte der deutsch- bzw. polnischsprachigen Holocaust- und Lagerliteratur von 1933 bis 1949 zu erfassen und deren bibliographische Angaben (ohne Volltexte) in einer Online-Datenbank bereit zu stellen. So können diese frühen Texte, die in weiten Teilen aus dem kulturellen und kollektiven Gedächtnis verdrängt wurden, für die öffentliche, wissenschaftliche und didaktische Wahrnehmung erschlossen und aufbereitet werden. Die systematische Erfassung der bis 1949 publizierten Texte sowie die Anreicherung durch exemplarische Informationen zu den Verfassern, zu gegebenenfalls erschienenen Rezensionen und Sekundärliteratur orientieren sich dabei an internationalen Annotationsstandards. Metadaten und Textinhalte (Orte, Lager, Gettos etc.) werden georeferenziert, d.h. anhand von Kartenmaterial verortet und in einem geographischen Informationssystem erfasst und dargestellt. Das zu entwickelnde Web-Portal soll dabei – neben der bibliographischen Suche – auch über geographische Karten gezielt Texte zu einer bestimmten Region auffindbar machen. Dabei sollen Abfragemöglichkeiten nach räumlichen Kriterien und bibliographischen Attributen kombinierbar sein.

    La littérature africaine d’expression française a pris depuis les années 1960 un tournant décisif où explosent le paradoxe, l’étrange, l’extraordinaire, l’outrecuidance, l’impertinence et toutes sortes de subversions de fond et de forme. Comme un cyclone esthétique et éthique, l’inspiration artistique en général, romanesque en particulier, souffle un vent libérateur exubérant dans les esprits qui semblent possédés par l’exaltation dionysiaque. Cet enthousiasme revêt les allures d’une véritable efflorescence baroque. On peut s’interroger sur l’utilisation du terme « baroque » qui s’applique à la littérature française sous Henri IV et Louis XIII, caractérisée par une grande liberté d’expression, et faisant contrepoids au classicisme et au réalisme. L’équilibre, la symétrie, la régularité manifestés dans les oeuvres d’art de la Renaissance européenne se sont altérés et compliqués pour de nombreuses causes dont les plus évidentes sont les guerres religieuses, l’accroissement de la richesse déclenché par les découvertes de l’or, et enfin le poids grandissant du surnaturel dans les esprits. L’art baroque a eu des représentants dans toute l’Europe. L’un des plus célèbres est l’Anglais Shakespeare [2]. La poésie, le théâtre et le roman ont souvent été baroques dans l’Europe des XVIe, XVIIè et XVIIIe siècles [3]. Au fond, à l’instar du romantisme, les traits ou éléments propres au baroque sont décelables chez des artistes de tout temps et de tout pays. Le baroque ne distingue pas uniquement les écrivains inclassables du fait qu’ils ne respectent pas les règles ordinaires ou classiques. Peuvent être qualifiés de baroques tous les auteurs africains qui ont le culte de tout ce qui est choquant, bizarre, excentrique et inattendu. Plus que tout autre créateur africain, le Congolais Sony Labou Tansi a cultivé le goût du baroque. Cet art est en pleine floraison dans ses ouvrages, en particulier dans son roman intitulé La vie et demie, publié en 1979 à Paris par les Editions du Seuil et qui a reçu le Prix spécial du premier ...

    Der Aufsatz spricht sich für eine intensivere Auseinandersetzung der germanistischen Mediävistik mit den Postkolonialen Studien aus. Diese haben seit den 1970er Jahren im englischsprachigen Raum eine wirkmächtige Diskussionskultur ausgebildet, die seit der Jahrtausendwende auch auf die Mediävistik übergreift, im deutschsprachigen Raum aber bisher kaum rezipiert wird. Um zu zeigen, dass eine Postkoloniale Mediävistik möglich und sinnvoll ist, wird die Frage diskutiert, ob es einen mittelalterlichen Kolonialismus gibt und es wird erörtert, worauf sich das ›Post‹ in ›postkolonial‹ bezieht. Ein kurzer Blick auf die angloamerikanische Forschung zeigt, welche Wege bereits beschritten wurden. Schließlich werden anhand von fünf hochmittelalterlichen Texten (Gesta Francorum, Willehalm, Rolandslied, Parzival, Herzog Ernst) exemplarische postkoloniale Lektüren vorgestellt. Solche Postkolonialen Lektüren sind, so die grundlegende Annahme, keine kulturwissenschaftliche Spielerei, sondern ein Verfahren zur Auseinandersetzung mit elementaren kulturellen und narrativen Konstellationen.

    Die in diesem Aufsatz entfaltete Analyse der kurzen Passage aus Vitruvs Traktat (VI, praef., 1), die eine erbauliche Anekdote über schiffbrüchigen Philosophen Aristippus darstellt und dabei eine sinngeladene plastisch-symbolische Bildlichkeit in sich verhüllt, erlaubt festzustellen, dass ein die klassisch-antiken ästhetischen Äußerungen bestimmendes Prinzip der Statuarität auch dort seine entscheidende Rolle spielt. ; The analysis here given of the short passage from Vitruvius’ treatise (VI. praef. 1), which narrates an edifying story about philosopher Aristippus and at the same time harbours meaningful plastic symbolical imagery, permits to state that the statuary principle determining the most various manifestations played its decisive part also in forming this little narrative.

    Un titolo quale "Dialettica negativa e antropologia negativa" sembrerebbe preannunciare un lavoro di confronto tra Th. W. Adorno e Ulrich Sonnemann, sulla scia di una indicazione mutuata dalla "Introduzione" di "Dialettica negativa" (1966). E invece, disattendendo una simile aspettativa, la "Negative Anthropologie" cui ci si riferisce in questo saggio è quella di Günther Stern/Anders. L’idea di un confronto tra le due prospettive nasce dalla curiosità di capire la corrispondenza tra la "dialettica negativa" e l'"antropologia negativa", laddove con il secondo sintagma si intende la concezione andersiana di un'umanità inadeguata al mondo. Che poi non si tratti di una stranezza ma di un interrogativo legittimo lo conferma, indirettamente, lo stesso Adorno, che in una nota contenuta nella sezione della "Dialettica negativa" dedicata alla lettura del pensiero di Heidegger, chiama in causa proprio la lezione di Anders.

    Avventurarsi e poi inoltrarsi nell'opera di Thomas Bernhard non è precisamente come fare una passeggiata, ma la passeggiata è un motivo ricorrente nell'opera bernhardiana (insieme a quella di Handke, di Sebald, di Walser, per fare solo alcuni nomi di passeggiatori nel Novecento di lingua tedesca). Le figure di Bernhard camminano, marciano, corrono, ma in una "direzione opposta" rispetto a quella indicata da Stifter. Talvolta i loro percorsi si snodano nella natura, come quando entrano in un bosco per non fare più ritorno (Gelo, Al limite boschivo, La partita a carte), a volte marciano nel chiuso della loro "casa-prigione", seguendo i percorsi labirintici e infiniti della loro mente (La Fornace, Cemento), altre volte ancora si muovono in un contesto cittadino e metropolitano, a Roma in Estinzione (dove la passeggiata con l'allievo Gambetti conserva un alone aristotelico, il peripatetico) o - più spesso - a Vienna.

    This paper studies one of the earliest forms of modern consumer culture—the road book—in relation to one of the early utopias of modern consumption—California. Criticism has traditionally treated the road book as an extension of a loosely defined transcendentalist project, where drivers take to the open road to “discover” themselves in nature. The determinate context, however, is corporate rather than literary-historical. The earliest road books were advertisements. Their itineraries linked up with other spatial technologies (e.g. the conveyor belts in automobile plants and modern highways), transforming space into a vast production and distribution network. Production and distribution intersected in California, the state with the most automobiles per capita and the destination of most early road trips. The first section of the paper considers the journey to California from the perspective of Emily Post, who would later become a famous writer on etiquette. Post’s book is the narrative equivalent to the standardized roadside architecture, converting local difference into a tourist attraction, and local (especially ethnic) identity into a commodity. The next section considers the effects of commercial homogenization on gender, focusing on the moment when some women, taking the steering wheel, assumed agency as consumers. The primary texts here are some of the early novels of Sinclair Lewis, along with examples of sociology and advertising copy from the 1920s and 1930s. The final section analyzes the WPA Guidebook to California as a federal attempt to re-map corporate space—the space of tourist attractions and consumers—according to a progressive ideal. All three sections treat the tour form as a spatial and literary structure—a privileged topos, at once geographical and symbolic, where complex relations between identity and place are negotiated in the form of a journey.
