    Abstract ; The paper’s focus is the archival recovery of one of modernist studies’ (unknown) beginnings, reforging the multifacetedness of the history of modernism and of the early history of the study of modernism. The paper introduces the earliest comprehensive and movement-defining study of modernism. This study is unknown to scholars of modernisms and is thus apt to contribute a new perspective on the beginnings of the concept of modernism’s formation. The study in question is an unpublished PhD thesis written (in English) at the University of Washington and submitted in 1924 – thus preceding Laura Riding and Robert Graves’s A Survey of Modernist Poetry and Edmund Wilson’s Axel’s Castle, which are considered to be the first movement-defining studies of modernism. The paper outlines this unpublished und unknown study and puts it into context by considering it in the light of the earlier critical discussions of modernist painting among other things. Furthermore it investigates the technological aspect of the study’s precarious status of being archived but being unpublished and unknown at the same time. By inquiring more generally into how the status of such texts is influenced by the technological developments of the internet age, the paper reflects on the technological conditions of academic discourse today. Arnesen’s study is the paradigmatic instance of what the paper refers to as the issue of the deep archive.

    This paper studies one of the earliest forms of modern consumer culture—the road book—in relation to one of the early utopias of modern consumption—California. Criticism has traditionally treated the road book as an extension of a loosely defined transcendentalist project, where drivers take to the open road to “discover” themselves in nature. The determinate context, however, is corporate rather than literary-historical. The earliest road books were advertisements. Their itineraries linked up with other spatial technologies (e.g. the conveyor belts in automobile plants and modern highways), transforming space into a vast production and distribution network. Production and distribution intersected in California, the state with the most automobiles per capita and the destination of most early road trips. The first section of the paper considers the journey to California from the perspective of Emily Post, who would later become a famous writer on etiquette. Post’s book is the narrative equivalent to the standardized roadside architecture, converting local difference into a tourist attraction, and local (especially ethnic) identity into a commodity. The next section considers the effects of commercial homogenization on gender, focusing on the moment when some women, taking the steering wheel, assumed agency as consumers. The primary texts here are some of the early novels of Sinclair Lewis, along with examples of sociology and advertising copy from the 1920s and 1930s. The final section analyzes the WPA Guidebook to California as a federal attempt to re-map corporate space—the space of tourist attractions and consumers—according to a progressive ideal.     The Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN) was designed in order to assess narrative skills in children who acquire one or more languages from birth or from early age. MAIN is suitable for children from 3 to 10 years and evaluates both comprehension and production of narratives. Its design allows for the assessment of several languages in the same child, as well as for different elicitation modes: Model Story, Retelling, and Telling. MAIN contains four parallel stories, each with a carefully designed six-picture sequence. The stories are controlled for cognitive and linguistic complexity, parallelism in macrostructure and microstructure, as well as for cultural appropriateness and robustness. The instrument has been developed on the basis of extensive piloting with more than 550 monolingual and bilingual children aged 3 to 10, for 15 different languages and language combinations. Even though MAIN has not been norm-referenced yet, its standardized procedures can be used for evaluation, intervention and research purposes. MAIN is currently available in the following languages: English, Afrikaans, Albanian, Basque, Bulgarian, Croatian, Cypriot Greek, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Icelandic, Italian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Standard Arabic, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, and Welsh.

    In his autobiographical essay "Ein Kind" (A Child) the Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard (1931-1998)describes the downing of a heavy World War II USAIRFORCE bomber at Tettelham near Traunstein in Upper Bavaria in 1944. The scene of the crash is now headed by a chapel and some reminiscenses of the crews' fate. Although the event is still vivid in the local history, it was not known that Thomas Bernhard had been a keen eyewitness.

    The popular medium of the periodical accompanied the subjects of Queen Victoria throughout their lives. It explained their own society to them and opened a window onto the world beyond Britain. The Black Forest was one of the travel destinations that were newly discovered by Victorian tourists in the second half of the 19th century. Periodical articles, reports and stories about the Black Forest reflect the things that fascinated and intrigued British travellers of this less frequented area of Germany. In eight posters students of the English department at the University of Freiburg show the facets of the Black Forest that were introduced to readers in Great Britain between 1840 and 1901: in periodicals for the family, for women and for a young readership. The final poster contrasts this view on the Black Forest from the outside with an inside view taken from the German periodical Die Gartenlaube. While the emphases shift slightly, there are also many similarities to the British view, as the German public newly explored and discovered the Black Forest for itself.

    Der Einsatz von Geographischen Informationssystemen (GIS) bietet auch für die Geisteswissenschaften zahlreiche Ansätze zur Generierung von neuem Wissen. Die GIS-Software ist jedoch unterschiedlich geeignet für geisteswissenschaftliche Fragestellungen. Getestet wurden daher zwei kommerzielle und vier Open Source GIS-Programme: MapInfo, ArcGIS, Quantum GIS, gvSIG, DIVA-GIS und SAGA. MapInfo zeichnet sich besonders für GIS-Anfänger durch seine große Benutzerfreundlichkeit aus. Jedoch sind die Anschaffungskosten recht hoch. ArcGIS weist den größten Nutzungsumfang auf, wobei jedoch keine oder kaum eine „intuitive“ Nutzung möglich ist. Zudem sind die laufenden Kosten durch aufwändige Abo-Lizenzverträge besonders hoch. Quantum GIS ist eine freie Software, die benutzerfreundlich ist und auch Anfängern einen leichten Einstieg ermöglicht. Hunderte Erweiterungen machen Quantum GIS sehr leistungsstark und universal einsetzbar. gvSIG ist nicht ganz leicht zu bedienen, da zudem die Dokumentation nur fragmentarisch vorliegt. Der große Funktionsumfang macht es jedoch zu einem vollwertigen GIS, wenn auch manch ergänzende Funktion fehlt. DIVA-GIS ermöglicht einen schnellen Einstieg durch seine gute Dokumentation. Man gelangt jedoch recht bald an die Grenzen des Nutzungsumfangs durch die eingeschränkte Funktionalität. SAGA hingegen erfüllte alle hier gestellten Anforderungen, sodass es, trotz der geringeren Anzahl von Erweiterungen, zusammen mit Quantum GIS als Open Source eine echte Alternative zu kommerziellen GIS-Programmen darstellt. ; The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is also in the Humanities an interesting method to analyze questions of space and time. For creating new results, we need to search reputed GIS software for our regular use.     Obgleich das erzählerische Syntagma der Tristansage sich ohne weitere Zugaben zu entfalten vermag, ist die Liebesgeschichte von Tristan und Isolde schon in der Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts eng mit den Legenden von König Artus und seinen Rittern verwoben. Die Frage, wie sich der keltische Tristanstoff zum Artusroman verhält, ist in der mediävistischen Forschung bislang jedoch nur in Ansätzen und zumeist wenig kontrovers diskutiert worden. Dabei bietet gerade die kontingente Verbindung beider literarischer Welten bei Eilhart und Béroul zu einem arthurisierten Tristanroman die Möglichkeit, die zentralen Scharnierstellen zweier Erzähltradition zu untersuchen und nach den Möglichkeiten und Grenzen des Erzählens von der Liebe um 1200 zu fragen.

    This paper studies one of the earliest forms of modern consumer culture—the road book—in relation to one of the early utopias of modern consumption—California. Criticism has traditionally treated the road book as an extension of a loosely defined transcendentalist project, where drivers take to the open road to “discover” themselves in nature. The determinate context, however, is corporate rather than literary-historical. The earliest road books were advertisements. Their itineraries linked up with other spatial technologies (e.g. the conveyor belts in automobile plants and modern highways), transforming space into a vast production and distribution network. Production and distribution intersected in California, the state with the most automobiles per capita and the destination of most early road trips. The first section of the paper considers the journey to California from the perspective of Emily Post, who would later become a famous writer on etiquette. Post’s book is the narrative equivalent to the standardized roadside architecture, converting local difference into a tourist attraction, and local (especially ethnic) identity into a commodity. The next section considers the effects of commercial homogenization on gender, focusing on the moment when some women, taking the steering wheel, assumed agency as consumers. The primary texts here are some of the early novels of Sinclair Lewis, along with examples of sociology and advertising copy from the 1920s and 1930s. The final section analyzes the WPA Guidebook to California as a federal attempt to re-map corporate space—the space of tourist attractions and consumers—according to a progressive ideal.     Die Studie „Studienkonflikte und Studienerfolgsfaktoren von Studierenden der TU Hamburg-Harburg“ ist von Lehrenden und Studierenden der TUHH initiiert worden. Sie ist aus Studiengebühren finanziert und unter Leitung von Prof. Winker konzipiert und durchgeführt worden. Ziele der Studie sind es, die zentralen Konflikt- und Bindungsfelder sowie die Lern- und Studienstrategien der Studierenden der TU Hamburg-Harburg zu erheben, um daraus Veränderungsvorschläge für die Lehr- und Lernumgebung abzuleiten. Damit ist die Studie Bestandteil einer breiten Palette von Studien, Maßnahmen und Lehrinnovationen, die derzeit an der TU Hamburg-Harburg durchgeführt werden, um die Studienbedingungen zu verbessern und die Bindungskräfte ingenieurwissenschaftlicher Studiengänge zu erhöhen. ; The study, "Study Conflicts and Academic Success Factors of Students at Hamburg University of Technology," has been initiated by teachers and students at Hamburg University of Technology. It is financed by tuition fees and carried out under the direction of Professor Winker. The study analyses the central study conflicts and academic success factors and the learning and study strategies of students at Hamburg University of Technology. The study should help to improve the teaching and learning environment. It is part of a wide range of activities and teaching innovations which are currently being conducted at the Hamburg University of Technology, in order to increase attractiveness of engineering studies.

    Unternehmen, die Produkte der nächsten Generation entwickeln, stehen oft vor folgendem Problem: Orientieren sie ihre Entwicklung zu stark an den heutigen Kunden und Anwendern, resultieren oft nur kleine Innovationen („inkrementale Innovation“). Lösen Sie sich hingegen von diesen Anwendern, erhöht sich die Gefahr einer Entwicklung „am Markt vorbei“. Das sog. Lead User Verfahren stellt einen Ausweg aus diesem Dilemma dar, da sich die Entwicklungsarbeit hier an Anwendern orientiert, die hinsichtlich marktlicher wie technischer Trends Vorreiter-Status in ihrer Branche haben. Die mit Lead Usern gemeinsam entwickelten Produktkonzepte können dann mit Hilfe der klassischen, testenden Marktforschung auf deren Vermarktungspotential bei der eigenen Kundschaft überprüft werden. Erste Projekterfahrungen mit dem Lead User Verfahren zeigen, dass insbesondere die beiden ersten Projektphasen einen hohen und konzentrierten Mitarbeitereinsatz erfordern, da diese sehr rechercheintensiv sind. Der erforderliche Arbeitsaufwand kann jedoch durch Nutzung heute weitgehend allgemein zugänglicher online-Medien effizient gestaltet werden. Anhand eines Beispiels aus der Medizintechnik werden die für ein Lead User Projekt typischen Fragestellungen und Aktivitäten illustriert und die Nutzung der online-Medien sowie deren Nutzen diskutiert.

    Vor dem Hintergrund der hohen Bedeutung von Forschungs- und Entwicklungskooperationen in der Biotechnologie analysieren die Autoren mit Hilfe einer empirischen Analyse die wesentlichen Einflussfaktoren auf das Management von zwischenbetrieblichen Entwicklungsprojekten. Basierend auf theoretischen Ansätzen und empirischen Studien werden geeignete Einflussfaktoren identifiziert und deren kausale Zusammenhänge in Form von Hypothesen formuliert, die anschließend kausalanalytisch überprüft werden. Die empirischen Befunde belegen, dass insbesondere die Kooperationserfahrung und die Planungsintensität einen positiven Einfluss auf die Effizienz der Kooperation haben. Entgegen der allgemeinen Auffassung in der Kooperationsforschung konnte hingegen kein direkter positiver Zusammenhang zwischen der Intensität der Zusammenarbeit und der Effizienz gefunden werden. Die Befunde der Studie zeigen vielmehr, dass aufgrund der höheren organisatorischen Komplexität bei einer intensiven Zusammenarbeit gleichzeitig eine intensivere Planung vorhanden sein muss. ; Because of the importance of inter-firm cooperation in research and development in the field of biotechnology, the authors analyze effects of relevant factors on the management of inter-organizational R&D-projects. Based on prior theoretical and empirical research, certain factors on the management of R&D-cooperation were identified and causal relationships between these factors were analyzed using structural equation modelling. Results of the empirical study in the biotechnology industry show that prior experience with the cooperation partner and the intensity of planning have a positive effect on the efficiency of the cooperation. In contrast to the literature, no direct positive effect of the intensity of cooperation on the efficiency was observed. We conclude that the organisational complexity depending on the intensity of cooperation require a high level of planning.
