Using Berlin as an example, the author points out that the lack of individuality is an essential feature of the modern and – even more – postmodern city. While, increasingly, the functional urban systems become invisible and the city itself indistinguishable, its identity is simulated within current settings of urbanity. This process can be traced in different media representing Berlin. In poems and novels, paintings, and films, exhibitions and buildings the blankness and the indifference of the modern city and its inhabitants either is covered by mythical or historical images or it is thematized and made conscious by aesthetical means. ; Am Beispiel Berlins zeigt der Verfasser in diesem Artikel, dass die Gesichtslosigkeit entscheidendes Charakteristikum der modernen und – um so mehr – der postmodernen Großstadt ist. Während die eigentlichen Funktionssysteme der Stadt zunehmend unsichtbar werden und die Stadt zugleich immer mehr an äußerer Unterscheidbarkeit einbüßt, wird ihre historische Identität als marktgängige Inszenierung simuliert. Dieser Prozess lässt sich an den verschiedenen Medien, in denen Berlin repräsentiert wird, verfolgen: Die Ausdruckslosigkeit und Indifferenz der modernen Stadt und ihrer Bewohner wird in Gedichten und Romanen, Gemälden und Filmen, Ausstellungen und Bauwerken teils von mythischen oder historistischen Bildern verdeckt, teils wird sie aber auch thematisiert und ästhetisch bewusst bemacht.
