    Price elasticities of transport demand are an important tool toassess the impacts of pricing policies. Empirical research on these elasticitiesleads to a rather wide range of outcomes. There is obviously a need for a morerigorous methodological framework. This paper provides a new integrativeapproach to the estimation of price elasticities while taking into account anycombination of characteristics of transport demand found in various empiricalstudies. To this end, we apply meta-analysis to this set of studies. From the variousmodelling approaches that underly these studies we develop an overlappinggeneral equilibrium framework that provides a meta-regression equationrelating the price elasticity estimate to the study characteristics.

    The Spatial Interaction Model proposed by Alonso as "Theory ofMovements" offers a new specification of spatial origin-destination flow models. Equations for flows between regions, totaloutflow from and total inflow to a region are linked bybalancing factors. The paper presents a consistent formulation ofSpatial Interaction Models in the Wilson tradition andAlonso's General Theory of Movement. It will be demonstrated thatAlonso's model contains Wilson's Family of SpatialInteraction Models as special cases, but that the reverse is nottrue. The paper discusses interpretations of the model andanalyzes its statistical properties. Several approaches will bediscussed which aim to make the meaning of the balancingfactors more explicit. The paper shows that simultaneous equationtechniques are required to estimate the variousrelevant parameters.

    This paper offers an overview of factors that are decisive forproductivity increase in the agricultural sector (bothfarming and agro-food). An attempt is made to explain differences intotal factor productivity in agriculture indifferent countries by means of meta-analysis, in particular, byusing rough set theory as a framework forcomparative study. The main aim is to derive the drivers of changesin agricultural food production with a view toconditional future predictions of an 'if...then' nature. The empiricalapplication to OECD countries is used toillustrate the potential of this new approach for identifyingcritical success factors in agriculture with a view tofuture food security objectives.

    This paper studies urban sustainability from the perspective ofexternalities. We develop a general spatialequilibrium model of a monocentric city, in which two types ofexternalities occur. On the one hand, pollution inthe industrial centre leads to a spatially differentiateddeterioration of the environmental quality in the residentialarea. On the other hand, the existence of the city is explained byagglomeration economies, represented as simpleMarshallian external benefits in production. We investigate free-market versus first-best and second-best optimalspatial equilibria, and conclude that the pursuit of environmentalgoals may sometimes come at the expense ofreduced agglomeration economies, but may actually sometimes alsostimulate these economies.

    After the Kyoto agreements the need has arisen to trace the implications ofvarious international environmentalstrategies. In this paper, we discuss relevant modelling issues ofincorporating important environmental policy measures in one ofthe popular applied general equilibrium models for internationaltrade, the so-called GTAP model. Special attention is paid to anextended version, the GTAP-E model, by addressing the question howto include the widely discussed instruments of InternationalEmission Trading, Joint Implementation, and Clean DevelopmentMechanisms. The paper will be concluded with some policy issues.

Against this background the studyoffers a review of key ecological concepts that are essential inbuilding bridges between ecology and economics. Issues discussed hereare ecosystem management principles, biodiversity indices and modernconcepts such as resilience. Particular attention is given to variousmonetary valuation approaches and methods, from the perspective ofconservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. For this purpose,the interrelation between biodiversity, resources, ecosystemfunctions, and human welfare is examined. The use of ecological andvalue indicators in integrated modelling and analysis is alsoaddressed. Finally, several illustrative applications are presentedin order to demonstrate the usefulness of the approaches discussed.Ultimately, this study offers a basis for biodiversity valuationapproaches at the interface of economics and ecology.

    It is clear that the future of the transport sector is fraught withuncertainties, as the system can be influenced by many factors thatcan develop in various ways. The aim of this paper is to gain insightinto the future development of the transportation sector. It presentsthe development of the transport sector based on four globalisationscenarios. On three different scale levels (global, European andDutch) four future images of the transportation market areconstructed. The expected implications of these scenarios are mappedout in a clear description of the various relevant aspects, such asmodal split and spatial organisation. In addition, this paper alsoprovides empirical insight into expected transport flows of passenger(passenger kilometres) and freight transport (ton-kilometres) in2020, based on data from 1995. It appears that globalisation leads inall scenarios and on each scale level to a considerable growth oftransported volumes.
