    The article argues that women's employment in the Middle East depends to some degree on the cultural traditions of female roles but to a much greater degree on the development policies of the single countries. It introduces a framework for the study of women's employment which is based on the gender and class divisions, the state policies and development strategies, and the organization of the world-economy. It shows that women's employment in the Middle East is low compared to other so-called peripheral or semi-peripheral regions due to the region's function within the world economy as an oil economy in which employment opportunities for women tend to be limited.     The article gives a review of the economic participation of women in the Arab world focusing on their household activities and society's view on it. It then examines the role women play as mobilizers of the labour-force both within and outside the family. It is shown that within the family women have considerable influence through childbearing and through setting an example as participants in the labour force themselves. Outside the family women's influence is determined by the type of their occupation. Women can be found in various key positions (e.g. doctors and teachers) from which they have influence on the quantity and quality of the labour force, as policy-makers however they are very few.     Whereas political participation of women in the Maghreb countries is low, social and economic participation of women is common. The author distinguishes three different ways of women's participation in the social and economic development of their countries: they participate as housewife and mother, housewife and mother with home-based work, or housewife and mother with employment outside the house.     A comparison between the situation of women in Yemen before and after the unification. In a first step a historical review of the former two Yemens, the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen and the Yemen Arab Republic, and their different policies towards women is given. A short summary of the political, social and economic events under which policies towards women were defined in the United Yemen, the Republic of Yemen, follows. It is shown that the situation of women has deteriorated due to these events and due to the fact that the Personal Status Law of the Republic of Yemen issued in 1992 is based on the Muslim Shariah and took on the restricted policies towards women which prevailed in the former Yemen Arab Republic.     Examining women's access to higher education and participation in the labour force in Lebanon the authors show that the outbreak of the civil war in 1975 marked a turning point. In need of human resources many traditional patterns of women's roles were abolished during the civil war years. Especially in the 1980s the number of educated and employed women from varying social backgrounds increased. However, the gap between women's and men's participation in the labour force remains due mainly to parential preferential treatment. (DÜI-Mjr)

    The participation of women in the labour force in Jordan is very low although social and economic conditions are relatively good compared to many other developing countries and the labour law grants equal rights and opportunities to women and men. The article examines the economic, demographic, cultural and educational factors on women's participation in the labour force stressing the great impact of the latter two. The study is based mainly on data obtained from the 1982-83 Manpower Survey in Jordan. Concluding it draws up a list of policy measures which might help to increase women's participation in the labour force. (DÜI-Mjr)
