    From the 19th century onwards, famous literary trials have caught the attention of readers, academics and the public at large. Indeed it is striking that more often than not, it was the texts of renowned writers that were dealt with by the courts, as for example Gustave Flauberts Madame Bovary and Charles Baudelaires Les Fleurs du Mal in France, James Joyces Ulysses and Henry Millers Tropic of Cancer in the US, D.H. Lawrences Lady Chatterleys Lover in Great-Britain, up to the more recent trials on Klaus Manns Mephisto and Maxim Billers novel Esra in Germany. By bringing together international leading experts, Literary Trials represents the first step towards a systematic discussion of literary trials on a global scale. Beginning by first reassessing some of the most famous of these trials, it also analyses less well-known but significant literary trials. Special attention is paid to recent developments in the relationship between literature and judicature, pointing towards an increasing role for libel and defamation in the societal demarcation of what literature is, and is not, allowed to do.This title was made Open Access by libraries from around the world through Knowledge Unlatched

Den Beleg dafür tritt der vorliegende Band von drei Ansätzen aus an: Interpretation, Funktionalität und Strategie. Dabei wird ein Korpus aus verschiedenen Kunstsparten behandelt, das von literarischen Deklarationen der russischen Moderne ab 1893 bis zu postmodernen Manifesten reicht, mit einem besonderen Schwerpunkt auf den Manifesten der historischen Avantgarde. Damit ist das vorliegende Buch auch als ein Beitrag zur Historiographie der Bezeichnung von Texten der Avantgarde als Manifeste, der Rolle von Manifesten in der Avantgarde und letztlich auch der Textproduktion der Avantgarde insgesamt zu verstehen

    From the 19th century onwards, famous literary trials have caught the attention of readers, academics and the public at large. Indeed it is striking that more often than not, it was the texts of renowned writers that were dealt with by the courts, as for example Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary and Charles Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du Mal in France, James Joyce’s Ulysses and Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer in the US, D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover in Great-Britain, up to the more recent trials on Klaus Mann’s Mephisto and Maxim Biller’s novel Esra in Germany. By bringing together international leading experts, Literary Trials represents the first step towards a systematic discussion of literary trials on a global scale. Beginning by first reassessing some of the most famous of these trials, it also analyses less well-known but significant literary trials. Special attention is paid to recent developments in the relationship between literature and judicature, pointing towards an increasing role for libel and defamation in the societal demarcation of what literature is, and is not, allowed to do.

Damit ist das vorliegende Buch auch als ein Beitrag zur Historiographie der Bezeichnung von Texten der Avantgarde als Manifeste, der Rolle von Manifesten in der Avantgarde und letztlich auch der Textproduktion der Avantgarde insgesamt zu verstehen

    From the 19th century onwards, famous literary trials have caught the attention of readers, academics and the public at large. Indeed it is striking that more often than not, it was the texts of renowned writers that were dealt with by the courts, as for example Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary and Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal in France, James Joyce's Ulysses and Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer in the US, D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover in Great-Britain, up to the more recent trials on Klaus Mann's Mephisto and Maxim Biller's novel Esra in Germany. By bringing together international leading experts, Literary Trials represents the first step towards a systematic discussion of literary trials on a global scale. Beginning by first reassessing some of the most famous of these trials, it also analyses less well-known but significant literary trials. Special attention is paid to recent developments in the relationship between literature and judicature, pointing towards an increasing role for libel and defamation in the societal demarcation of what literature is, and is not, allowed to do. This title was made Open Access by libraries from around the world through Knowledge Unlatched.

    Texte, in denen sich Autoren dazu äußern, welche Funktionen und Eigenschaften sie Literatur zuschreiben, werden kaum übersetzt und wenn überhaupt, in der Regel erst dann, wenn ein Autor sich im Ausland bereits einen Namen gemacht hat. Das gilt auch für niederländischsprachige Autoren. Dieser Unterschied in der Rezeption von Autoren in Übersetzung ist nicht trivial, haben doch poetologische Äußerungen Auswirkungen auf das Bild, das Kritiker von Autoren zeichnen. Wenn hier elf Texte von niederländischsprachigen Autorinnen und Autoren vorgelegt werden, speist sich dieses Unterfangen nicht nur aus dem Wunsch nach Ergänzung, sowie aus dem Wunsch nach noch fundierteren Urteilen über diese Autoren. Überlegungen von Autoren zu ihren Auffassungen von Literatur bilden außerdem eine Textsorte, die großes Lesevergnügen bereiten kann.
