    "This book about reading the English novel during the "long eighteenth century," a stretch of time that, in the generally accepted ways of breaking up British literary history into discrete periods for university courses, begins some time after the Restoration of King Charles II in 1660 and ends around 1830, before the reign of Queen Victoria. At the beginning of this period, the novel can hardly be said to exist, and writing prose fiction is a mildly disreputable literary activity. Around 1720, Daniel Defoe's fictional autobiographies spark continuations and imitations, and in the 1740s, with Samuel Richardson and Henry Fielding's novels begin what is perceived as "a new kind of writing." By the end of the period, with Jane Austen and Walter Scott, the novel has not only come into existence, it has developed into a more-or-less respectable genre, and in fact publishers have begun to issue series of novels (edited by Walter Scott and by Anna Barbauld, among others) that establish for that time, if not necessarily for ours, a canon of the English novel. With the decline of the English drama and the almost complete eclipse of the epic, the novel has become by default the serious literary long form, on its way to becoming by the mid-nineteenth century, with Dickens, Thackeray, and Eliot, the pre-eminent genre of literature. This chapter will consider how and why the novel came to be when it did"--

    Fragen, die das Verhältnis vom Lokalen zum Globalen zum Inhalt haben, die sich mit den Beziehungen des Subjekts zu seiner Umwelt beschäftigen und daher an einer Vertiefung von Umgebungswissen interessiert sind, können als Kernthemen moderner Wissenschaft gelten. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei zumeist ein Begriff, der historisch an prominenter Stelle zwischen diesen Themen und Problemstellungen vermittelt hat: Milieu. Milieu – Umgebungen des Lebendigen in der Moderne erläutert deshalb für einzelne Disziplinen historische Bedeutungen und aktuelle Konjunkturen des Milieubegriffs. Ausgangspunkt aller Beiträge ist die These, dass die Zirkulation des Milieubegriffs durch Disziplinen und Wissensfelder diesen beständig transformiert, und ihm gerade dadurch ein Potenzial zur strukturellen Beschreibung von Umgebungen des Lebendigen erwächst.Mit Beiträgen von Wolf Feuerhahn, Nils Güttler, Claus Leggewie, Johannes Lehmann, Felix Lüttge, Maria Muhle, Florian Sprenger, Laurent Stalder, Michael Vester und einer Einleitung der Herausgeber.

    Abū Manṣūr al-Thaʿālibī (d. 429/1038) was a very productive writer in Arabic philology and belles lettres and a promotor of the Arabic language in the eastern lands of the Islamic word. Born in Nishapur, it was there that he began his career, forging bonds of friendship with influential literati and various men of state. From there he travelled to the courts of different rulers in some of the major cities in Transoxania and Khurāsān, finally to return to Nishapur where he spent the last years of his life. A compiler and literary critic more than an author in his own right, al-Thaʿālibī’s literary anthologies have done much for the preservation of early Arabic literature—mostly poetry—otherwise lost. As explained by the editor, the present work is not a Persian rendering of his Taḥsīn al-qabīḥ wa-taqbīḥ al-ḥasan , but probably done from an Arabic original that was similar to two of Thaʿālibī’s other compilatory works

    In early Islamic philosophy, poetry was regarded as a means to transmit the eternal truths of philosophy to the masses and to move them to virtuous conduct by the use of poetical syllogisms. We find this theory for the first time in the works of Abū Naṣr al-Fārābī (d. 339/950). In another application, poetry was used as a didactic tool in the philosophical curriculum, like Avicenna’s (d. 428/1037) Urjūza fi ʼl-manṭiq or, much later, Mullā Hādī Sabzavārī’s (d. 1289/1873) Manẓūma on logic and philosophy. Finally, there are the many poems which, while philosophical in spirit, were not written to be learned by heart by others but rather from personal motives. Here we can mention some of the Persian poetry ascribed to Avicenna or the philosophical poetry of Nāṣir Khusraw (d. 481/1088). The poems in this collection by Mīr Dāmād (d. 1040/1631), a prominent member of the Isfahan School in philosophy, belong to this latter category

    Après avoir longtemps privilégié la langue écrite, la linguistique française, à partir des années soixante-dix, s’est tournée vers l’oral et a développé des moyens et des méthodes d’investigation adaptés. Si la langue parlée des périodes révolues nous est à jamais inaccessible, notamment pour ce qui est de sa réalité phonique, les textes consignés à l’écrit gardent néanmoins des traces de la langue parlée : la linguistique diachronique n’a pas manqué de s’y intéresser, en particulier pour étudier les moyens de représentation de l’oralité à l’écrit et identifier des marqueurs spécifiques. Les contributions réunies dans ce volume interrogent cette relation entre la phonie et la graphie, entre oralité et écriture, en français, à diverses époques de son histoire, et recherchent dans les textes écrits (littéraires et documentaires) les traces d'une représentation de l’oral plus ou moins explicite. D'autres articles sont plus spécialement consacrés à l’analyse du fonctionnement des outils de formatage, tels la ponctuation et les différents diacritiques. Toutes ces enquêtes ont été réalisées dans une perspective diachronique et couvrent une longue période : depuis les débuts de sa mise par écrit du français jusqu’au 17e siècle.
