Im Ganzen handelt es sich um etwa fünfzig Erzählungen aus der Zeit von 1920 bis 1954, eine Auswahl, die groß genug ist, um als repräsentativ gelten zu können, gleichzeitig aber zu groß, als dass eine erschöpfende Behandlung möglich wäre.

    Es war bekanntlich Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, der mit seinem Werk einen Wendepunkt in der Geschichte der serbischen Sprache und ihrer Orthographie markiert. Dieses Werk, das nicht nur groß ist, weil es Neues brachte, sondern auch, weil es zielsicher in die gesellschaftliche Wirklichkeit hineingetragen wurde, hat nahezu alle progressiven Ideen der Vorläufer Vuks in sich aufgenommen. Einer dieser Vorläufer, dem Vuk wohl am meisten verdankt, was die Reform der serbischen Kyriliza und Orthographie wie die Auffassung des phonologischen Prinzips betrifft, ist Sava Mrkalj, eine ebenso bedeutende wie tragische Persönlichkeit des serbischen kulturellen Lebens am Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts.

    Die vorliegende Arbeit ist eine wissenschaftliche Arbeit, und aus diesem Grund konnte hier nur die Form der möglichst korrekten Übersetzung gewählt werden. Im Anschluß an die Übersetzung folgt eine kommentierende Darstellung des Gedankenganges. Die Interpretation enthält eine Strukturanalyse (ohne Stilanalyse), eine Untersuchung über Majakovskij (anhand des Poems sowie unter teilweiser Einbeziehung anderer Werke Majakovskijs) und eine Untersuchung der zwei zentralen Themenkreise. Darauf folgt die Geschichte der Rezeption des Poems in der Sovjetunion (mit einer abschließenden kurzen Bewertung des Poems) und schließlich eine Einordung des Poems in das Gesamtwerk Majakovskijs.

    The poetry of Wilhelm Müller, to whom Heine expressed indebtedness for his renewal of the forms of the German "Volkslied", had rarely been discussed in depth prior to this volume originally published in 1970. Cottrell's study is an interpretation of Müller's three most successful song-cycles: "Die schöne Müllerin", "Die Winterreise", and "Frühlingskranz". The first two, interpreted in chapters one and two, are famed through Schubert's musical settings. Chapter three offers an interpretation of the "Frühlingskranz". A last chapter considers Müller's poetic imagination. Full texts of the poems discussed are included in the Appendix and are indexed by titles and first lines.
