    Claudia Gather: Feministin, Forscherin, Netzwerkerin und Mentorin sowie unermüdliche Hochschulgestalterin und Hochschullehrerin; sie hat durch ihr Schaffen, Denken und Handeln in den letzten Jahrzehnten bleibende Eindrücke hinterlassen, nicht nur in den Gender Studies in Forschung, Lehre und Praxis, sondern auch bei Menschen, die sie im Laufe der Jahre umsichtig und selbstverständlich unterstützt hat. Ein Grund, sie mit dieser Festschrift für ihr wissenschaftliches Lebenswerk zu würdigen. Claudia Gather, feminist, researcher, networker, mentor, professor and tireless political influencer, has left a lasting impression in recent decades through her work, thinking and actions, not only on the field of gender studies in terms of research, teaching and practice but also on those people she has supported carefully and without question over the years. This is reason enough to dedicate an anniversary publication which honours her academic life work to her.     Bringing Chicana/o studies into conversation with queer theory and transgender studies, Post-Borderlandia examines why gender variance is such a core theme in contemporary Chicana and Chicanx narratives. It considers how Chicana butch lesbians and Chicanx trans people are not only challenging heteropatriarchal norms, but also departing from mainstream conceptions of queerness and gender identification. Expanding on Gloria Anzaldúa’s classic formulation of the Chicana as transformer of the "borderlands," Jackie Cuevas explores how a new generation of Chicanx writers, performers, and filmmakers are imagining a "post-borderlands" subjectivity, where shifting national, racial, class, sexual, and gender identifications produce complex power dynamics. In addition, Cuevas offers fresh archival analysis of the Chicana feminist canon to reveal how queer gender variance has always been crucial to this literary tradition

    This book proposes to rethink kinship in early Greek epic poetry, and argues that the depiction of parenthood as a poetic practice in epic poetry is socially motivated. Thus, the discursive form and the narrative function of genealogical relations are studied within the poetic context that encompasses them and according to the criterion of gender in order to interpret the references to the female and/or masculine ancestors in the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Theogony, the Catalogue of Women and the Homeric Hymns.Furthermore, this book makes an important step towards a female-centered catalogic poetics. Through the study of the analytic female-centered catalogues attested in archaic Greek epic poetry, this book highlights the hypothesis of the existence of a female-centered poetic tradition that sang the klea gynaikôn in terms of kinship and procreation.Within a reception perspective that expands beyond classical disciplines, the study of the function of kinship in early Greek epic poetry touches on anthropological, literary and historical subjects that fall within several disciplinary fields such as ancient history, anthropology of kinship, women's history and gender studies

    This study offers a literary history of the war novel in Africa. Coundouriotis argues that this genre, aimed more specifically at African readers than the continent’s better-known bildungsroman tradition, nevertheless makes an important intervention in global understandings of human rights.The African war novel lies at the convergence of two sensibilities it encounters in European traditions: the naturalist aesthetic and the discourse of humanitarianism, whether in the form of sentimentalism or of human rights law. Both these sensibilities are present in culturally hybrid forms in the African war novel, reflecting its syncretism as a narrative practice engaged with the colonial and postcolonial history of the continent.The war novel, Coundouriotis argues, stakes claims to collective rights that contrast with the individualism of the bildungsroman tradition. The genre is a form of people’s history that participates in a political struggle for the rights of the dispossessed

    What makes stories about portraits so gripping and unsettling? Portrait Stories argues that it is the ways they problematize the relation between subjectivity and representation. Through close readings of short stories and novellas by Poe, James, Hoffmann, Gautier, Nerval, Balzac, Kleist, Hardy, Wilde, Storm, Sand, and Gogol, the author shows how the subjectivities of sitter, painter, and viewer are produced in relation to representations shaped by particular interests and power relations, often determined by gender as well as by class. She focuses on the power that can accrue to the painter from the act of representation (often at the expense of the portrait’s subject), while also exploring how and why this act may threaten the portrait painter’s sense of self. Analyzing the viewer’s relation to the portrait, she demonstrates how portrait stories problematize the very act of seeing and with it the way subjectivity is constructed in the field of vision

    What is the effect of gender priming on solidarity behaviour? We explore a two-player solidarity game where players can insure each other against the risk of losses. In the utility function, priming is represented as the 'change in weight' given to the other player's payoff. We test this experimentally in a developing country setting, the Philippines. We consider a treatment that involves reminding subjects of their gender. We found that, without priming, there were no statistically different gender differences in the solidarity game. With priming, however, there was an increased willingness in women to provide insurance.

    Lockdowns and voluntary social distancing led to significant reduction in people's mobility. Yet, there is scant evidence on the heterogeneous effects across segments of the population. Using unique mobility indicators based on anonymized and aggregate data provided by Vodafone for Italy, Portugal, and Spain, we find that lockdowns had a larger impact on the mobility of women and younger cohorts. Younger people also experienced a sharper drop in mobility in response to rising COVID-19 infections. Our findings, which are consistent across estimation methods and robust to a variety of tests, warn about a possible widening of gender and inter-generational inequality and provide important inputs for the formulation of targeted policies

    Violence and harassment are widespread issues within the garment sector in Asia, and with the effects of climate change increasing, it is possible that these behaviours could escalate. Using Bangladesh as a case study, this working paper will highlight the intersection between climate change and gender-based violence and harassment by exploring how climate change, measured by increasing heat stress and extreme weather events, could lead to heightened violence being faced by the (mostly female) workers in the sector as a result of its impact on productivity. It is important to note that gender-based violence in the world of work exists independently of climate change; however, evidence finds that violence in the garment sector can be linked to workplace intensity, which is likely to be further stressed by the impacts of climate change, should current trends continue. In addition, gender-based violence tends to increase with higher levels of socio-economic vulnerability, which climate change will also increase. Accordingly, while addressing harmful social norms is key to improving gender equality and reducing gender-based violence and harassment in the world of work, this working paper will explore how climate change will further exacerbate the factors associated with the prevalence of such behaviours within the current context and how, if left unaddressed, this combination of factors could ultimately contribute towards heightened levels of violence and harassment within the garment sector.

    The objective of this paper is to examine and analyse how care workers in Argentina organize the care of children under the age of 12. The paper explores and compares the strategies developed by educators and domestic employees, involved in two highly feminized occupations, where employment conditions and access to social rights and services differ significantly. The study is based on statistical information, gained from Argentina’s National Survey on Social Structure (Encuesta Nacional de Estructura Social, ENES-Pisac), representing both sectors. The article looks at the ways workers organize childcare within their own families and the inequalities that surface in the process. The paper looks at their household structures and practices; access to state, private, and community care; the hiring of care staff; and the role of families and family members in providing care. While examining the heterogeneous character of the category of care workers, the paper seeks to understand how social class affects both employment conditions and care strategies which in turn reproduce different forms of inequality.

    Parenthood: A neglected perspective in feminist debates? For a long time, feminist debates hardly dealt with parenthood and family. The equality feminism that has set the tone up to the present is oriented toward equality with men. men - unbound and freed from care work by women. Times change: a shift in the perspective on parenthood is making its way into feminist debates and struggles. No longer directed against the family, but against conditions in which life with children becomes an imposition. The handbook brings together 50 voices of feminism on the subject of parenthood. The contributions use buzzwords to explore the question, how motherhood, fatherhood and parenthood are processed in different feminist currents. How are legal aspects of the exercise of motherhood and fatherhood interpreted? What paths lead to parenthood? And what do feminist utopias of a good of a good life with children? Elternschaft: Eine ausgesparte Perspektive in der feministischen Auseinandersetzung? Lange Zeit beschäftigten sich feministische Debatten kaum mit Elternschaft und Familie. Der bis in die Gegenwart hinein tonangebende Gleichheitsfeminismus orientiert sich an der Gleichheit mit Männern – ungebunden und durch Frauen von Fürsorge befreit. Zeiten ändern sich: Ein Bedeutungswandel in der Perspektive auf Elternschaft hält Einzug in feministische Auseinandersetzungen und Kämpfe. Nicht länger richten diese sich gegen die Familie, sondern gegen Verhältnisse, in denen das Leben mit Kindern zur Zumutung wird. Das Handbuch vereint 50 Stimmen des Feminismus zum Thema Elternschaft. Die Beiträge gehen anhand von Schlagwörtern der Frage nach, wie Mutterschaft, Vaterschaft und Elternschaft in unterschiedlichen feministischen Strömungen verarbeitet werden. Wie werden rechtliche Aspekte der Ausübung von Mutter- und Vaterschaft ausgelegt? Welche Wege führen in die Elternschaft? Und wie sehen feministische Utopien eines guten Lebens mit Kindern aus?

    Bei Trans*-Sexualität denken die meisten Menschen zunächst an das Phänomen der Transgeschlechtlichkeit. Aber wie steht es um die Sexualität von trans* Personen? Was macht für sie guten Sex aus? Und sind genitalangleichende Operationen notwendig für eine gelingende Sexualität? Zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen führte Jonas Hamm mit trans* Personen, die keine Genitalangleichung anstreben, Interviews über guten Sex und den Weg dorthin. Um den – oftmals nur scheinbaren – Widerspruch zwischen Geschlechterrolle und Genitalienstatus zu überbrücken, greifen die Interviewten auf eine Vielzahl intrapsychischer, zwischenmenschlicher und kollektiver Ressourcen und Strategien zurück. Hamm analysiert die Lern- bzw. Entwicklungsprozesse seiner Interviewpartner*innen, hinterfragt Vorurteile und gibt neue Verständnisimpulse für die Beratungsarbeit.

Thema ist das Wirkungsgefüge der Motive, die die soziale Distanz und Abgrenzung regulieren: das scheinbar paradoxe Kräftespiel zwischen den Grundbedürfnissen nach Nähe, Wärme, Intimität einerseits und Unabhängigkeit, Selbstständigkeit, Autonomie andererseits. Ausgehend von reichem Datenmaterial aus vergleichender Verhaltensforschung und Kulturanthropologie entwirft der Autor eine Systemtheorie des »Psychischen Apparates«, die für die Praxis Orientierungshilfe bietet, aber auch allgemein eine Neubesinnung auf die Stellung des Menschen in der Natur anregt. Dies ist der erste Teil einer Trilogie, in der Norbert Bischof seinen Beitrag zur psychologischen Grundlagenforschung in Sachbuchform dargestellt hat. Hier legt er die vergleichend-ethologischen Fundamente zu einer Systemtheorie der Motivdynamik. Im zweiten Buch (Das Kraftfeld der Mythen) wechselt der Blick auf die Persönlichkeitsentwicklung und ihren Widerschein in den Bildern kultureller Weltdeutung. Das dritte Buch (Moral) dringt am tiefsten in philosophisches Territorium vor; sein Thema ist die Entstehung und der Stellenwert des normativen Überbaus menschlicher Verhaltensorganisation.

Dadurch wird es gesellschaftlich wie individuell zunehmend notwendig, gute Voraussetzungen für das Rentenalter als Lebensphase zu schaffen. Um es bei guter Gesundheit und Lebensqualität zu verbringen, sollte bereits die Zeit vor dem Übergang zur Vorbereitung genutzt werden. Insbesondere Männer, die sich oft stark mit ihrer Berufstätigkeit identifizieren, sind gefordert, ein hohes Gesundheitspotenzial und gute soziale Bedingungen verantwortungsbewusst aufzubauen. Der Vierte Deutsche Männergesundheitsbericht setzt bei einer fundierten Bestandsaufnahme der Situation der Männer zwischen 55 und 74 Jahren an. Aus ihr ergeben sich wichtige Themen für die Politik, für die Soziale Arbeit und für den gesellschaftlichen Diskurs insgesamt: die Situation der Erwerbsarbeit zehn Jahre vor der Berentung, die Übergangsphase sowie gesundheitsfördernde Projekte für Männer vor und nach dem Renteneintritt.     This paper uses the latest Tanzania labour force survey-the Integrated Labour Force Survey-and a censored bivariate probit model to analyse gender differences in labour force participation and gender bias in formal wage employment in urban Tanzania. Our findings indicate that, compared to men, women are less likely to participate in the labour market and less likely to get formal wage employment, suggesting the existence of gender bias in the labour market in urban areas of Tanzania. However, after accounting for selection into labour force participation, the existing gender bias is narrowed for women with high school or university education. The regression results suggest that the existing gender differences in formal wage employment probabilities cannot entirely be explained by observable characteristics. The finding of a positive unexplained formal wage employment probability differential suggests that the possibility of gender discrimination against women in urban Tanzania cannot be completely ruled out.

    Although Tanzania has made notable progress in enhancing access to financial services, the gender gap in financial inclusion persists. This paper examines gender disparities in financial inclusion in Tanzania using descriptive and regression analyses. While the advent of mobile phone money services has led to increased access to formal financial services, women still lag behind in access to and utilization of formal financial services. Based on FinScope Tanzania survey data for 2017, the empirical results show that women-especially married women-are less likely to access mobile money services and banking financial services compared with men. Similarly, women are less likely to save and borrow compared with men, with a higher percentage opting to keep cash at home or save with a saving group. The gender gaps in financial inclusion are attributable to factors such as lack of income, limited financial literacy, and lack of access to smartphones and other digital facilities. There is a need to be cognizant of gender differences in preferences. Policy initiatives to enhance access to digital financial services, improve women's education and financial literacy, and promote saving groups are critical to enhance women's access to formal financial services.

    We investigate the causes of the gender disparity in labour market participation in Ethiopia using iterative quantitative and qualitative longitudinal analysis through the whole childhood of the individual into early adulthood, from age 8 up to age 25. Multilevel survival analysis shows that girls have higher probability of remaining in school at all grades, and by age 22 significantly more women than men have completed high school or tertiary education. From an early age, both women and men undertake a lot of unpaid labour for their households that tends to be highly gendered, and women's work is uncounted in the current System of National Accounts definition of labour. However, women still undertake less paid work than men. Decent work for young women in rural areas remains especially limited; female job-seekers complain of poor working conditions and low pay or a mismatch with what they were trained to do in college or university. The role of social and migration networks in young people's transitions was less discernible in the quantitative findings but emerged as crucial in the qualitative analysis. Opportunities for young women in the labour market remain constrained compared with those for young men. This leads to less pressure on girls to drop out of school, and they have higher educational achievements; however, these do not translate into labour market participation. Marriage at a younger age also remains a key driver of women leaving the labour force in Ethiopia.

    This paper analyses whether living in a locality with high crime against women affects the probability of early marriage-that is, marriage before the legal age of marriage of girls. We hypothesize that parents who perceive themselves to live in a high-crime locality would marry their daughters off at an early age to protect the chastity of their daughters from any sexual violence. However, there would be no similar effect of perceived crime in the locality on the marriage of sons. Using a nationally representative longitudinal data set and tackling the potential endogeneity of local crime rates, we find evidence to support our hypothesis. The results show that perceived crime against women in the locality significantly increases the likelihood of early marriage of girls, while there is no such effect on boys of comparable age group. We also find no such effect of gender-neutral crimes (such as theft and robbery) on the likelihood of early marriage of girls. Moreover, we find that the relationship holds only in conservative households where the purdah system is practised, and also in the northern region of India, where patriarchal culture and gender norms are stronger than in the southern region. These findings are relevant as under-age marriage has negative consequences for the well-being of women in terms of health, education, post-marital agency, and future economic participation.

    Cameroon's informal labour market largely harbours female workers, engaged mainly in low-productivity and low-paying jobs. We investigate the sticky floor and glass ceiling phenomena in the informal labour market as a whole and across its segments. We use the 2010 Cameroon labour market survey, employing the recentred influence function and blending the Oaxaca-Ransom and Neuman-Oaxaca decomposition methods. The resulting framework enables us to account for selectivity bias at the mean, resolve the index number problem of the standard decomposition, and examine earnings differentials across the unconditional earnings distribution. We find compelling evidence of a sticky floor phenomenon in the informal labour market manifested essentially among wage earners. Returns to experience mitigate the gender earnings gap at the mean, and 10th and 50th percentiles of the unconditional earnings distribution. Female workers have an unambiguous human-capital-based advantage over their male counterparts at the mean, lower tail, and median of the distribution.

    The wage of an individual is observed only when he/she is employed. However, getting employment requires two decisions. First, an individual has to decide to participate in the labour market, and second, an employer must decide to hire that individual. Since female labour market participation often differs from that of men, and employers' decisions to hire may also be influenced by gender, it is appropriate to account for this double selection process. This study uses the latest household survey in Ghana to estimate gender wage gaps by correcting for this double selection process. We find that the average total gender wage gap is positive and significant irrespective of the sample selection correction method used. Our results indicate that women on average receive lower wages than men. Irrespective of the type of selection method used, our findings suggest that almost all the wage gap is a result of differences in returns, with only a small part coming from differences in observables. We find that the gender wage gap is smaller among formal wage employees and the gap decreases as education level increases. Although our findings indicate a similar trend in the wage gap across all specifications, the magnitude of the gap is sensitive to the choice of the model. This points to the need to be cautious about the choice of sample selection correction used to analyse gender wage gaps.
