"Definitions of home and identity have changed for Muslims as a result of international 'war on terror' rhetoric. This book uniquely links the post-9/11 stereotyping of Muslims and Islam in the West to the roots of current jihadism, the resurgence of different forms of Islam and ethnocentrism within the subcontinent and beyond, and to US realpolitik in order to foreground the effects of terrorism debates on Pakistanis at home and in the diaspora. Through close readings of fiction by Nadeem Aslam, Kamila Shamsie, Uzma Aslam Khan, Mohsin Hamid, Mohammed Hanif, H.M. Naqvi, Ali Sethi, Maha Khan Phillips and Feryal Gauhar, who confront negative attitudes towards Muslims and Islam in the twenty-first century, this book not only challenges the centrality of Western narratives but also foregrounds Anglo-American foreign policy in the Muslim world as a form of terrorism. The author proposes an articulation of a flexible identity among Muslims that is termed a 'global ummah' after 9/11"..

"In 1585, at the height of the Jesuit missionary activity in Japan, which was begun by Francis Xavier in 1549, Luis Frois, a long-time missionary in Japan, drafted the earliest systematic comparison of Western and Japanese cultures. This book constitutes the first critical English-language edition of the 1585 work, the original of which was discovered in the Royal Academy of History in Madrid after the Second World War. The book provides a translation of the text, which is not a continuous narrative, but rather more than 600 distichs or brief couplets on subjects such as gender, child rearing, religion, medicine, eating, horses, writing, ships and seafaring, architecture, and music and drama. In addition, the book includes a substantive introduction and other editorial material to explain the background and also to make comparisons with present-day Japanese life. Overall, the book represents an important primary source for understanding a particularly challenging period of Japanese history and culture. "..

"Recent natural as well as man-made cataclysmic events have dramatically changed the status quo of contemporary Japanese society, and following the Asia-Pacific war's never-ending 'postwar' period, Japan has been dramatically forced into a zeitgeist of saigo or 'post-disaster.' This radically new worldview has significantly altered the socio-political as well as literary perception of one of the world's former superpowers, and in this book the contributors closely examine how Japan's new paradigm of precarious existence is expressed through a variety of pop-cultural as well as literary media. Addressing the transition from post-war to post-disaster literature, this book examines the rise of precarity consciousness in Japanese socio-cultural discourse. The chapters investigate the extent to which we can talk about the emergence of a new literary paradigm of precarity in the world of Japanese popular culture, and analysis of a variety of contemporary texts from literature, manga and anime, television drama and film offers an interpretation of the many dissonant voices in Japanese society. The contributors also outline the related social issues in Japanese society and culture, providing a comprehensive overview of the global trends that link Japan with the rest of the world. Visions of Precarity in Japanese Popular Culture and Literature will of great interest to students and scholars of contemporary Japan, Japanese culture and society, popular culture and social and cultural history"--

"This volume presents new research and critical debates in African book history, and brings together a range of disciplinary perspectives by leading scholars in the subject. It includes case studies from across Africa - from Ethiopia to Cameroon, from Morocco to South Africa - and from third-century manuscript traditions to twenty-first century internet communications. Throughout, it seeks to frame individual case studies in ways that resonate with critical debates in African book history throughout the continent. Studies of the book in Africa to date have been dominated by the histories of how European missionaries, colonial administrators and traders brought the book and literacy to Africa. In contrast, this volume places African book histories in their multiple forms at the centre of study; and the research, questions and debates driving each chapter are derived from African cultural, political and economic contexts"--

"Contrary to the image of peaceful, maternal divine figures such as the Virgin Mary, there exists a gamut of fierce female divinities. Although distant geographically, these divine figures are surprisingly similar-representing concepts of liminality, outsiderhood, and structural inferiority, embodied in the divine feminine. These strong, independent, unrestrained figures are commonly and full of magical powers, including power over sexuality, transformation, and death. Małgorzata Oleszkiewicz-Peralba offers a study of the origin and worship of four feminine deities across cultures and continents: the Slavic Baba Yaga, the Hindu goddess Kālī, the Brazilian Pombagira, and the Mexican Santa Muerte. Responding to a growing interest in fierce feminine archetypes and syncretic religions, Oleszkiewicz-Peralba examines how sacred icons have been adapted and transformed across time and place"-- "This provocative book examines untamed feminine divinities that are powerful, fiercely independent, courageous, and wise. They traverse time and national boundaries, appearing under different names all over the world. Although they have often been domesticated, maligned, and marginalized, they continue to be extremely attractive, as they empower their devotees confronting them with the ultimate reality of impermanence and death"-- "Contrary to the image of peaceful, maternal divine figures such as the Virgin Mary, there exists a gamut of fierce female divinities. The author proposes an articulation of a flexible identity among Muslims that is termed a 'global ummah' after 9/11"--

"A study of films set in four iconic American landscapes...Indian Country, the South, the inner city, and the suburbs...reveals the way that popular film participates in a nationwide discussion about the role of multiculturalism in the post civil rights era. Cinematic sensations of familiarity and foreignness construct a virtual cultural map of America for the film spectator".

"Orientalism as a concept was first applied to Western colonial views of the East. Subsequently, different types of orientalism were discovered but the premise was that these took their lead from Western-style orientalism, applying it in different circumstances. This book, on the other hand, argues that the diffusion of interpretations in orientalism was not uni-directional, and that the different orientologies, Western, Soviet and Oriental, did not develop in isolation from each other and were interlocked in such a way that a change in any one of them affected the others; and that those being orientalised were active, not passive, players in shaping how views of themselves developed"--
