    Der Fokus der vorliegenden Dissertationsschrift liegt auf der Zäsur des in der Forschung in zwei Werkkomplexe geteilten Gesamtwerkes Jean Pauls, auf dem Übergang von den Satiren zu seinem Romanerstling, der Unsichtbaren Loge. Vorgeschlagen wird eine Lektüre, welche in diesem Übergang keinen Bruch, sondern konzeptionelle Kontinuität ausmacht trotz der Differenzen, die zwischen den beiden Textgattungen durchaus bestehen. Böni legt dar, dass diese Differenzen in dem sich in den beiden Textgattungen jeweils unterschiedlich veräussernden Verhältnis von Bildlichkeit und Narration begründet liegt. Mit ihren Analysen gelingt es ihr, die literarischen Erzeugnisse des Zettelkastenautors nicht länger als defizitäre, sondern als beziehungsreiche, mehrschichtige, vor allem aber als geordnete Gebilde zu begreifen. Es wird deutlich, dass sowohl in den Satiren als auch im Romanerstling eine ikonische Lektüre den Schlüssel zum Verständnis der komplexen literarischen Texterzeugnisse darstellt: Es erhellt, inwiefern der strukturell bedingte Tod der satirischen Narration eine stehende Bilderflut freisetzt, und inwiefern die Sinngenerierungsverfahren des paragrammatisch organisierten Logen-Textes denjenigen von modernen Kunst-Bildern ähneln.

    Mimesis, or the imitation of nature, is one of the most important concepts in eighteenth-century German literary aesthetics. As the century progressed, classical mimeticism came increasingly under attack, though it also held its position in the works of Goethe, Schiller, and Moritz. Much recent scholarship construes Early German Romanticism's refutation of mimeticism as its single distinguishing trait: the Romantics' conception of art as the very negation of the ideal of imitation. In this view, the Romantics saw art as production ('poiesis'): imaginative, musical, transcendent. Mattias Pirholt's book not only problematizes this view of Romanticism, but also shows that reflections on mimesis are foundational for the German Romantic novel, as is Goethe's great pre-Romantic novel 'Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship'. Among the novels examined are Friedrich Schlegel's 'Lucinde', shown to be transgressive in its use of the aesthetics of imitation; Novalis's 'Heinrich von Ofterdingen', interpreted as an attempt to construct the novel as a self-imitating world; and Clemens Brentano's 'Godwi', seen to signal the end of Early Romanticism, both fulfilling and ironically deconstructing the self-reflective mimeticism of the novels that came before it.     Der aktuelle Kanon romantischer Bildkunst in Deutschland ist das Resultat umfassender Revisionsvorgänge. Diese setzten bereits im 19. Jahrhundert selbst ein und kulminierten in der "Jahrhundertausstellung deutscher Kunst (1775-1875)", die 1906 in der Berliner Nationalgalerie stattfand.     How and why childhood became so important to such a wide range of Romantic writers has long been one of the central questions of literary historical studies. Ann Wierda Rowland discovers new answers to this question in the rise of a vernacular literary tradition. In the Romantic period the child came fully into its own as the object of increasing social concern and cultural investment; at the same time, modern literary culture consolidated itself along vernacular, national lines. Romanticism and Childhood is the first study to examine the intersections of these historical developments and the first study to demonstrate that a rhetoric of infancy and childhood - the metaphors, images, figures and phrases repeatedly used to represent and conceptualize childhood - enabled Romantic writers to construct a national literary history and culture capable of embracing a wider range of literary forms

    Addressing a gap in Shelley studies, Jessica K. Quillin explores the poet's lifelong interest in music. Quillin connects the trope of music with Shelley's larger formal aesthetic, political, and philosophical concerns, showing that music offers a new critical lens through which to view such familiar Shelleyan concerns as the status of the poetic, figural language, and the philosophical problem posed by idealism versus skepticism. Quillin's book uncovers the implications of Shelley's use of music by means of four musico-poetic concerns: the inherently interdisciplinary nature of musical imagery and figurative language; the rhythmic and sonoric dimensions of poetry; the extension of poetry into the performative realms of the theatre and drawing room through close links between most poetic genres and music; and the transformation of poetry into music through the setting and adaptation of poetic lyrics to music. Ultimately, Quillin argues, Shelley exhibits a fundamental recognition of an interdependence between music and poetry which is expressed in the form and content of his highly sonorous works. Equating music with love allows him to create a radical model in which poetry is the highest form of imaginative expression, one that can affect the mind and the senses at once and potentially bring about the perfectibility of mankind through a unique mode of visionary experience

    Der Band enthält die Beiträge von drei Sektionen des Warschauer IVG-Kongresses. Die Vorträge der Sektion Politische Romantik im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert (betreut und bearbeitet von Ulrich Breuer) bieten Studien, die sich durch unterschiedliche (literatur- und kulturwissenschaftliche, soziologische, mentalitätsgeschichtliche) Herangehensweisen an die Romantik auszeichnen und den Begriff «politische Romantik» in seiner dreifachen (historischen, typologischen und disziplinären) Geltung auf den Prüfstand stellen. Die Sektion Die deutsche Romantik und ihre Folgen (betreut und bearbeitet von Min Suk Choe, Hartmut Steinecke und Walter Hinderer) enthält Arbeiten, die der Rezeptionsästhetik und der Wirkungsgeschichte dieser literarischen und historischen Bewegung gewidmet sind. Zum einen wird die «historische» Romantik in neuen Kontexten untersucht, zum anderen wird ihre Tragweite gezeigt, indem ihre Folgen in zweihundert Jahren in Deutschland sowie in einigen der zahlreichen Länder erörtert werden, in denen die deutsche Romantik rezipiert und mit eigenen kulturellen Entwicklungen verbunden wurde. Die Beiträge der Sektion Der deutschsprachige politische Roman (betreut und bearbeitet von Penka Angelova) sind dem politischen Roman der Jahrtausendwende gewidmet.
