    "How and why childhood became so important to such a wide range of Romantic writers has long been one of the central questions of literary historical studies. Ann Wierda Rowland discovers new answers to this question in the rise of a vernacular literary tradition. In the Romantic period the child came fully into its own as the object of increasing social concern and cultural investment; at the same time, modern literary culture consolidated itself along vernacular, national lines.     Schon früh hat man bei Hölderlin den Zug zu einer mehr und mehr esoterischen und hermetischen Sprache bemerkt. Hölderlins Bestreben, in der Poesie Dinge auszusagen, die nie vorher in der Poesie ausgesprochen worden waren, trug dazu bei, ihn immer näher an jenen Abgrund des Schweigens heranzuführen, in dem das Ungesagte und Unsagbare ruht. Wenn Hölderlin philosophische Begriffe zu poetisieren suchte, dann weil ihm die Ansätze Spinozas, Rousseaus, Kants und bis zu einem gewissen Grade auch die Fichtes und vor allem die philosophischen Gedankengänge seiner Freunde Schelling und Hegel wesentliche Kategorien in die Hand gaben, mit deren Hilfe er sich die Welt deutete. Aber auch Hölderlins Krankheit (eine Psychose) - zunächst latent aber in einigen Symptomen wahrnehmbar, dann mit deutlichem psychotischen Schub und schließlich mit einer destruktiven Endphase - hat seinen Sprachgebrauch und seine Denkgewohnheiten ohne Zweifel sowohl positiv (im Sinne einer Steigerung seiner Kreativität) als auch negativ (im Sinne einer gelegentlichen Inkohärenz und Dunkelheit der Aussage) geprägt.
